The US Segway Ninebot MAX G3 (model 051601U) is built for longer urban rides: it has a 597 Wh battery, 11-inch self-sealing tires, and hydraulic suspension at both ends. Its main trade-off is its 54.2 lb (24.6 kg) weight, which can make stairs and transit transfers a chore. Segway’s range figures are controlled-test maxima, not a promise of how far every rider will travel.
What the MAX G3 is—and which version this review covers
This review covers the US MAX G3, model 051601U, using Segway’s US manual and a hands-on review by Tom’s Guide reviewer Mike Prospero. The European MAX G3 E is a regional variant, so its speed figures should not be applied to the US model.
The distinction matters most for speed. Segway’s European page specifies a nominal top speed of about 25 km/h (15.5 mph) for the MAX G3 E. The US manual lists up to about 28 mph (45 km/h) for the US model and cautions that local traffic laws can restrict use. Check the rules where you plan to ride before treating either figure as a legal road speed. Segway’s European MAX G3 E specifications and the US MAX G3 manual document their respective versions.
How far can the MAX G3 go on a charge?
For the US model, Segway lists up to 50 miles (80 km) in Eco, 25 miles (40 km) in Sport, and 40 miles (65 km) at maximum speed. These are manufacturer figures under specified conditions, not typical-commute guarantees. Segway’s speed-mode range test used a full battery, a 75 ± 5 kg load, an ambient temperature of 25 ± 5°C, pavement, and each mode’s maximum speed. The manual says speed, rider load, starts and stops, temperature, and battery aging affect range.
#1 Best Overall
- Extended Battery Life: Enjoy up to 50 miles of riding with the 597 Wh battery, thanks to SegRange technology, ensuring long, uninterrupted rides.
- Effortless Maneuvering: Effortless controls and intuitive design make it easy for beginners to maneuver, while SegRide ensures superior stability, even on sharp turns and slippery roads.
- Built for Durability: With a high-strength aluminum alloy frame and rigorous durability testing, the MAX G3 is designed for long-term use, lasting through 12,427 miles of simulated random vibrations and over 500,000 suspension durability tests.
- Superior Wheel Quality: The upgraded 11-inch self-sealing tubeless tires absorb shocks and reduce vibrations, offering a stable, comfortable ride across various terrains, and can automatically seal punctures up to 4mm.
- Quick Charging: Charge your scooter in just 3.5 hours with the built-in fast charger, or reduce charging time to 2.5 hours with the optional DC charger (sold separately).
Real rides can fall well short of the largest headline number. Prospero reported one Sport-mode ride of just over seven miles with 36% battery remaining and estimated about 11 miles for that ride. That is one reviewer’s experience, not a controlled test or a general range rating; riding style changes the result. He also described range as variable in his review, updated 14 September 2026. Read the Tom’s Guide hands-on review.
For a commuting decision, judge the scooter against the distance you need at your likely speed and load, and leave margin for stops, temperature, and battery aging. Do not plan around the 50-mile Eco maximum unless your route and riding conditions resemble Segway’s test conditions.
Rank #2
- Maximize every mile: Ride further without interrupting your fun thanks to proprietary SegRange technology and a high-capacity 717Wh battery that delivers up to 56 miles in Eco Mode.
- Effortless stability for every rider: The SegRide Stability Enhancement System combines an 80mm trailing distance, curved handlebar, and optimized steering damping to deliver confident directional control even at high speeds and sharp turns.
- Tested for the long ride: A high-strength lightweight aluminum alloy frame has endured 500,000 frame load fatigue test cycles and a simulated 12,427 miles of random vibration testing to support up to 286 lbs with lasting reliability.
- Advanced self-sealing tires: Wide 11-inch by 2.8-inch tubeless tires enhance traction and absorb vibration across all terrains while the built-in jelly layer automatically seals punctures up to 4mm in diameter for uninterrupted rides
- Fast and flexible charging: The built-in fast charger fully charges the scooter in approximately 4 hours with a single cable; connect a second DC charger simultaneously to reduce that time to approximately 3 hours.
How does it ride?
The hardware is aimed at comfort on imperfect pavement: 11-inch tubeless self-sealing tires, a front twin-tube hydraulic shock absorber, and dual rear hydraulic shock absorbers. The manual also lists front and rear disc brakes. Those components make the MAX G3 a more substantial urban commuter than a lightweight, rigid scooter, though they do not eliminate the effect of potholes or rough surfaces.

Prospero said the scooter delivered a smooth ride and handled hills well during more than a month of use. He reported reaching about 22 mph on a 6% test hill and 17 mph on a 10% hill; those are his observations, not manufacturer specifications or a comparative lab result.

- Powerful 1000W Motor – Reach speeds up to 22 MPH with strong acceleration for city commutes and weekend adventures.
- Extended Range up to 43 Miles – 551 Wh battery and RideyLONG technology optimize motor, tire, and controller performance for longer rides.
- Advanced Dual Suspension – Front hydraulic + rear spring suspension for a smooth ride on rough roads.
- Dual Braking System – Front drum and rear electronic brakes for reliable stopping.
- TCS Traction Control – Industry-first traction control technology improves grip on wet, slippery, or loose surfaces.
He also found the partial-throttle response twitchy, with a lurch, and noticed a brief slowdown after potholes. Segway supplied a firmware update that, he reported, alleviated the throttle issue somewhat. This experience is a useful caveat for riders who value very gradual low-speed control, but it is not evidence that every unit or software version behaves identically.
Is the MAX G3 too heavy to carry?
At approximately 54.2 lb (24.6 kg), the US MAX G3 is heavy for a scooter that may need to be carried regularly. It folds to approximately 1218 × 590 × 592 mm, but folding does not make its weight disappear. If your commute includes stairs, crowded transit, or lifting it into a car, that burden may outweigh the benefits of its range and suspension. Segway lists a maximum payload of 286 lb (130 kg).
Rank #4

Can you ride it in wet weather?
The manual lists IPX6 protection for the scooter body and IPX7 for the battery pack. These ratings do not mean the scooter is safe to submerge. Segway says not to charge it while wet and excludes immersion damage from warranty coverage. For the precise warranty and safety terms, consult Segway’s MAX G3 Important Information.

Who should consider the MAX G3?
- A plausible fit: commuters seeking a substantial, suspended scooter for longer rides who can store it without routinely carrying it upstairs.
- Think carefully if: your route depends on frequent lifting, you need especially gentle partial-throttle control, or your trip requires a dependable range beyond what a single charge can deliver in your riding conditions.
- Before choosing it: compare expected range at your speed and load, weight and carrying needs, suspension and braking for your roads, local speed rules, and current price, warranty, and service access. The cited sources do not establish a competitor comparison or a current stable price.
