Housing is the clearest cost difference: Bellevue’s 2025 city report says its typical home cost about twice as much as in the Seattle metropolitan area, while Bellevue’s median household income was about 40% higher in 2023. That comparison is between Bellevue and the Seattle metro—not between two matched city budgets—and it does not establish a universal rent gap or guarantee that higher pay offsets housing costs. For a tech worker choosing where to live, compare the actual home, compensation and commute rather than relying on one cost-of-living percentage.
Is Bellevue more expensive than Seattle?
The strongest direct comparison available here concerns home prices. Bellevue’s 2025 Data Analysis and Community Engagement Report says that Bellevue’s median household income in 2023 was about 40% higher than the Seattle metropolitan statistical area’s, while a typical Bellevue home cost about twice as much as a typical home in the Seattle MSA.
The same report estimates Bellevue’s typical home price at about $1.6 million in 2025, after approximately 60% growth from 2020 to 2025. That is an estimate of a typical home price—not a rent figure, an individual sale price or a forecast. It is useful context for buyers, but it does not tell a renter what a comparable apartment costs in either city.
There is not enough comparable evidence here to give a reliable Seattle-city-versus-Bellevue-city rent difference or a single percentage by which one city’s overall cost of living is higher. Costs depend heavily on unit size, neighborhood, household size, whether you rent or own, and how you get to work.

What regional spending data says—and what it does not
U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics consumer-expenditure figures show the Seattle metro is a high-cost region, but they are not a Seattle-versus-Bellevue household budget. The Seattle-Tacoma-Bellevue area covers multiple communities, and the averages combine different kinds of consumer units.
| Average annual expenditure, 2023–24 | Seattle metro area | United States |
|---|---|---|
| Total | $109,460 | $77,907 |
| Housing | $37,970 | $25,853 |
| Transportation | $16,452 | $13,278 |
| Food | $13,648 | $10,077 |
| Healthcare | $6,750 | $6,195 |
These are regional and national averages reported by the BLS in its September 2026 Seattle Area Economic Summary, for the 2023–24 expenditure period. They describe the region’s broad spending profile; they do not predict what a particular tech worker will spend or quantify a Bellevue premium over Seattle.

How Seattle-area tech pay compares with national wages
The same BLS summary reports higher mean hourly wages for selected technology occupations in the Seattle metropolitan area than nationally. The figures below are May 2025 occupational means, not salary offers, total compensation, take-home pay or a Bellevue-versus-Seattle pay comparison.

| Occupation | Seattle metro mean | U.S. mean |
|---|---|---|
| Computer and information research scientists | $97.72 per hour | $74.00 per hour |
| Software developers | $84.09 per hour | $71.20 per hour |
| Aerospace engineers | $75.47 per hour | $68.30 per hour |
Because the wage figures cover the Seattle-Tacoma-Bellevue metro, they cannot show whether a job in Bellevue pays more than an equivalent job in Seattle. For a relocation decision, compare offers for the same role and level, using the same compensation basis—including base pay, bonus and equity where applicable. A regional wage mean cannot tell you whether an individual offer will cover a particular home or commute.

Taxes: no Washington personal income tax advantage between these cities
Seattle and Bellevue are both in Washington, so moving between them does not create a state personal income tax difference. Bellevue’s economic-development page, Why Bellevue?, lists “No personal income tax” among the state’s tax-system features. It also describes property taxes and a business-and-occupation tax based on gross receipts; that page is not a complete household tax calculator. Do not treat the state income-tax point as proof that the two cities have identical overall taxes or fees.
Commute costs depend on the two addresses
A city name alone cannot establish which option is cheaper or more convenient for commuting. The relevant comparison is door-to-door from the home you would actually choose to the worksite, accounting for mode, schedule, frequency, fares, parking and travel time.

Bellevue says its Transit Center serves more than 20 frequent regional transit routes. Its Why Bellevue? page describes Link light rail’s 2 Line as providing an Eastside-to-Seattle connection beginning in 2026. These details may matter if your home and workplace are well served, but they do not establish your route, fare, parking costs or travel time. Check current service for your specific trip.
A practical way to compare your own move
- Set a housing comparison. Choose the same bedroom count and similar home type in neighborhoods you would genuinely consider. For a purchase, account for the price and ownership costs; for a rental, compare current listings rather than applying the home-price comparison to rent.
- Use your household’s budget. Include household size, housing tenure, food, healthcare and transportation. The BLS figures are a useful regional reference, not a substitute for your own expenses.
- Compare job compensation like for like. Match role, level and total-compensation components. Do not treat metro-wide average wages as a city-specific salary adjustment.
- Price the real commute. Check the home-to-office trip at your expected work hours, including transit availability or driving, parking and the number of days you travel.
- Check relevant taxes and fees. There is no Washington personal income tax distinction between the cities, but assess other costs that apply to your household and housing choice.
Bellevue’s Affordable Housing Strategy 2026–2032 gives an additional affordability benchmark: 2025 regional Area Median Income was $157,100 for a four-person household. AMI is a HUD-defined regional housing-affordability measure, not the median salary of a tech worker, so it should not be used as a substitute for an occupation-specific pay figure.
