To make education reports searchable and send readers to the right page, extract existing PDF text where it is usable, OCR only image-based pages, and index text in page-scoped records tied to a stable report ID. Keep the original PDF available: OCR output can be wrong, and readers need a way to verify important passages against the source.
How the pipeline works
OCR, indexing, and displaying results are separate jobs. OCR recognizes text in page images; a search engine retrieves indexed text; your application must preserve the link between each match and its source page. OCRmyPDF defines OCR as technology that converts images of typed or handwritten text into computer text that can be selected, searched, and copied (OCRmyPDF documentation).
- Inspect each PDF. Record its stable report ID, file metadata, and page count. Check whether it already has usable text before choosing OCR.
- Extract or recognize text. Extract text from pages that already contain it. OCR scanned or otherwise image-only pages. Choose local processing or a managed service according to your language, layout, privacy, and output requirements.
- Normalize by page. Keep each page or page-scoped segment associated with its report and source page number.
- Index the records. Send the normalized records to a search backend through its Node.js-compatible client. Store the identifiers needed to reopen the original report at the matching page.
- Return and verify results. Show a snippet with the report title and page reference, and give readers a way to inspect the original page.

}This is an implementation pattern, not a vendor-mandated schema. The page number should identify the source PDF page, not merely a printed page label: a report may number its introduction with Roman numerals or restart numbering in an appendix. If you divide a page into smaller searchable segments, retain the same report and page identifiers on each segment and add any location data your viewer needs.

Do not flatten an entire report into one string if readers need page-level results. Amazon Textract represents pages with PAGE blocks and returns a Page value for blocks in multipage documents. Preserve those page associations when processing its structured output, including any result pagination required by the API (Textract Block API). A JPEG or PNG image is treated as one page, even if it depicts several sheets, so multipage page identity requires a multipage PDF/TIFF input or deliberate splitting with a reliable page map.
Choose an OCR and output path
These options do not all produce the same deliverable. Structured text and page locations can feed a page-level search index; a searchable PDF is useful when the deliverable is a PDF with an embedded text layer. Decide which output readers need before selecting a tool.

Connect Node.js to the search index
Keep OCR and search as distinct components: the OCR or extraction stage produces text associated with a source page; the index stores and retrieves those records. Elastic documents a JavaScript client for performing Elasticsearch operations (Elasticsearch JavaScript client). A Node.js service can use a compatible client to index page records and query them, but the client does not supply OCR or establish that a particular index design will produce good results.

When presenting a match, return enough information to identify the report and reopen its source page. A result usually needs a report title, snippet, and source page reference; the application should construct a viewer link or location from stored identifiers rather than rely on the snippet as the source of truth.
Validate text and preserve the source
Recognized text is not authoritative transcription. Scan quality, handwriting, columns, tables, and language can affect what an OCR system returns; vendor capability statements do not prove how well it will handle a particular report collection. Keep the original bytes and provide a route from every indexed record back to its page.

- Check names, scores, table values, quotations, and other high-impact extracts against the original page.
- Test reports that reflect the actual collection, including its languages, scan quality, page layouts, and mix of born-digital and scanned documents.
- Review privacy policy, access controls, and retention separately before sending institutional documents to a cloud service.
- For managed OCR, design for asynchronous jobs, retries, and paginated results where the service requires them.
Decide what to test before choosing a provider
The right option depends on requirements the title alone cannot determine: document volume, languages, privacy rules, cloud constraints, search backend, budget, and whether readers need indexed page records, a searchable PDF, or both. Compare candidates against those needs rather than assuming one tool is best for every report collection.

- Output: Do you need structured text and locations, an embedded-text PDF, or both?
- Page fidelity: Can every extracted segment be mapped back to the correct source page and, where needed, a location on that page?
- Document structure: Does your collection include handwriting, tables, columns, or layouts that your chosen method must handle?
- Language and quality: Does the model support the languages in your reports, and how does it perform on a representative set? No comparative accuracy figure is established here.
- Deployment and operations: Is local processing required, or is a cloud service acceptable after privacy and access review? Account for job handling, retries, and infrastructure or service charges in your own workload.
