To find a message in Slack for iOS, tap the Search bar at the top of the screen, enter a word, phrase, or search query, then tap Search or the magnifying-glass option in the suggestions. Use quotes and modifiers such as in:, from:, and after: to narrow the results.
Search for a message in Slack for iOS
- Open Slack and tap the Search bar at the top of the screen.
- Enter a keyword or phrase you remember. To look for an exact phrase, put it in quotation marks, such as
"launch plan". - Optionally add modifiers to narrow the search. For example,
"launch plan" in:#project-launch from:@Morgan after:2026-09-01searches for that phrase in a channel, from a sender, after a date. Slack says you can combine modifiers. - Tap Search or the magnifying-glass icon in the suggestions.
- Browse the results, switch result types, or tap More filters to refine them.
Slack’s official Search in Slack instructions document this iOS workflow. The entry point is the top Search bar; older instructions that place Search in the bottom tab bar refer to a historical app layout.

Use search modifiers to narrow the results
Add a modifier to the words you remember when you know where, when, or from whom a message came. Replace example names, channels, and dates with the ones relevant to your workspace.

Choose between a precise query and Slack AI search
If you remember a keyword or a detail such as the channel, sender, or date, an ordinary search with explicit modifiers gives you direct control over those constraints. If Slack AI search is available in your workspace, you can also try a natural-language question. Slack says mobile search may show AI answers with citations you can tap to inspect the underlying messages or files.

AI search availability depends on your plan and workspace configuration. Slack’s Guide to AI features in Slack lists automatic search filters for Pro, Business+, and Enterprise+, and search answers for Business+ and Enterprise+. It also notes legacy-plan and add-on exceptions, so check your workspace’s current feature availability rather than assuming a plan label guarantees access.
