SD-SDI, HD-SDI, 3G-SDI, 6G-SDI, and 12G-SDI are different SDI rate and standard classes—not guarantees that a device supports a particular resolution or frame rate. To know whether two pieces of equipment will work together, match their exact video format, signal mapping, link configuration, and connection requirements.

What SDI labels tell you

SDI, or Serial Digital Interface, is a family of digital video interfaces. Its labels help identify the broad rate or standard class of a signal. They do not, by themselves, specify every format a particular camera, router, converter, or display can send or receive.

Label What it indicates What to verify on the device
SD-SDI The familiar name for the older standard-definition class. The SMPTE ST 259 standard is often called SD-SDI to distinguish it from later HD and 3G interfaces. Supported SD formats and the device’s stated SDI standard.
HD-SDI A high-definition SDI class. Device literature may describe it as 1.5G or HD-SDI. The exact supported video formats; the label alone does not establish them.
3G-SDI A higher-rate class associated with SMPTE 424M in manufacturer specifications. Supported formats and, where relevant, whether the signal uses Level A or Level B mapping.
6G-SDI A further rate class commonly used in UHD workflows. The specific SD, HD, or UHD formats supported by that model.
12G-SDI The common name for SMPTE ST 2082-1. The device’s listed formats and link configuration. A manufacturer listing for one 12G product cannot establish the capability of every 12G device.

These names are useful shorthand, but a rate-class label is not a substitute for the full specification. Supported resolution and frame rate can depend on the implementation, sampling and bit depth, signal mapping, and whether the equipment uses a single-, dual-, or quad-link configuration.

How to check whether two SDI devices are compatible

  1. Read both specifications. Check the source and destination for the exact SDI standard or rate and the video format: resolution, frame rate, and any stated sampling or bit depth. Do not assume that matching labels mean matching format support.
  2. Match the signal mapping. For 3G-SDI, verify Level A or Level B where applicable and confirm that both ends support the chosen mapping. A mapping mismatch can prevent interoperability even when both devices are described as 3G-SDI.
  3. Check link configuration. Confirm whether the format is carried over a single link or requires dual- or quad-link operation, and make sure both devices support the same arrangement.
  4. Verify every converter in the path. Check its input and output directions and the formats it supports. A converter that accepts SDI and outputs HDMI is not automatically suitable for every SDI signal or HDMI display combination.
  5. Check connector and cable suitability separately. The SDI label describes the signal/interface class, not whether a particular cable and connector are appropriate for the run. For coax, confirm the cable’s rated performance at the signal rate and intended length.
  6. Compare the complete format line before buying or configuring. Manufacturer specifications may list multiple standards and configurable single-, dual-, or quad-link outputs. Use the exact model’s documentation rather than inferring capability from a product-family name.

3G Level A and Level B

Some 3G-SDI workflows distinguish Level A and Level B signal mappings. They are not interchangeable assumptions: check the mapping mode stated by the source and destination, and set or convert the signal as required by the equipment documentation. A device supporting 3G-SDI does not, from that label alone, establish which mapping modes it accepts.

Elebase USB to USB C Adapter for iPhone 18 Pro Max,USBC Car Charger Adapter
  • Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
  • Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

When an SDI converter helps

A converter can bridge interfaces when its supported input matches the source and its output matches the destination. For example, an SDI-to-HDMI converter may be appropriate for connecting an SDI source to an HDMI monitor, but only if the converter supports the source format and the monitor accepts the resulting HDMI format.

Product capabilities vary. Blackmagic Design lists its Mini Converter Optical Fiber 12G as multi-rate and compatible with SD, HD, and Ultra HD formats up to 2160p60. That is a specification for that listed product, not a general guarantee about all 12G-SDI equipment. Check the chosen converter’s own format list, direction, and any optical-module requirements.

Cable and distance: what you can safely conclude

Do not treat the SDI rate label as a cable-distance rating. Coax performance depends on the cable model, signal rate, run length, and installation. There is no universal maximum distance that can be stated for all SDI coax runs; use the selected cable manufacturer’s rating for the intended signal and installation. Also verify connector compatibility separately from the cable’s performance rating.

Common compatibility problems and what to check

  • No picture despite matching SDI labels: Compare the exact resolution and frame rate supported at both ends, then check mapping and single- or multi-link mode.
  • A 3G signal is not accepted: Confirm whether the source uses Level A or Level B and whether the destination supports that mapping. If the devices differ, consult their documentation for a supported conversion or configuration.
  • A converter does not produce the expected output: Check its input/output direction and supported formats against both devices. The fact that a model is an SDI-to-HDMI converter does not mean it supports every SDI format.
  • The signal is unreliable over coax: Check the cable model’s performance rating for the signal rate and actual run length, along with connector suitability. Do not rely on a distance figure for a different cable.
  • A multi-link setup does not work: Verify that both ends support the same single-, dual-, or quad-link arrangement and that the connections are made as specified for those devices.

A separate use case: keeping uploaded videos live on YouTube

SDI compatibility concerns video signals between equipment; it does not keep a YouTube channel live. For that separate task, StreamNeo is a cloud service that loops uploaded videos on YouTube. You upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live; your computer does not have to stay on. The uploaded video streams as made, up to 4K 60fps, at one flat price per slot, with automatic recovery if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. To try it, start a free day with StreamNeo.
