SD card speed classes are standardized ratings for a card’s minimum write performance under defined conditions. The C, U, V and E symbols help identify whether a card meets a sustained recording requirement; they do not promise peak read speed or guarantee performance in every device. Match the class and card interface to the requirements in your device’s manual.

What do the symbols on an SD card mean?

The number inside a speed-class symbol identifies a minimum write-performance level, not the card’s maximum speed. The SD Association defines four speed-class families:

Family Common markings What the marking indicates Bus-mode note
Speed Class C2, C4, C6, C10 Minimum write-performance class C10 is associated with High Speed mode or faster.
UHS Speed Class U1, U3 Minimum write-performance class These classes use UHS bus modes as specified by the SD Association.
Video Speed Class V6, V10, V30, V60, V90 Minimum write-performance class V6 and V10 can appear with High Speed and UHS modes; V30 with UHS; V60 and V90 with UHS-II/III.
SD Express Speed Class E150, E300, E450, E600 Minimum write-performance class for SD Express These classes apply to SD Express mode.

The figures are standardized class labels, not a universal measure of read speed, every write task or application performance. See the SD Association’s Speed Class overview and its bus-speed overview.

How a speed class differs from transfer speed

A speed-class marking describes minimum sequential write performance under conditions defined by the standard. That sustained-write measure is particularly relevant to video recording: a camera must keep writing a stream of data, rather than briefly reach a high peak. A manufacturer’s advertised peak read or write speed describes a different performance measure and should not be treated as the class rating.

Elebase USB to USB C Adapter for iPhone 18 Pro Max,USBC Car Charger Adapter
  • Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
  • Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

The card and host’s bus interface also affect real-world transfer performance. The SD Association describes High Speed, UHS-I, UHS-II, UHS-III and SD Express interfaces. A newer, faster card cannot give an older device support for a newer interface. The Association also cautions that a card and host may not deliver expected performance if their class markings do not form a supported combination—even if their nominal figures look equivalent. Check the SD Association’s interface guidance alongside your device specifications.

How to choose a class for a camera or recorder

The SD Association’s FAQ uses U3/V30 as a common example for Full HD to 4K recording. That is general guidance, not a guarantee that either rating suits every camera, codec, frame rate, bit depth or recording mode. Use the camera or recorder manual’s minimum requirement for the exact mode you plan to use. The SD Association FAQ explains the general application guidance.

  1. Find the exact recording mode in the device manual.
  2. Check the stated minimum speed class, supported card format and capacity range.
  3. Check whether the device supports the card’s bus interface, especially if transfer speed matters.
  4. Choose a card that meets or exceeds the required class and is compatible with the device’s format and capacity limits.
  5. Compare advertised peak transfer speeds separately, and only if the device and card reader support the relevant interface.

When comparing cards, weigh the minimum write class, supported interface, compatibility with the intended recording mode, format and capacity, and price. The first three determine whether the card is suitable for capture; a high peak-speed figure alone does not establish that.

What the class rating does—and does not—tell you

  • It does: identify a standardized minimum write-performance class under defined conditions.
  • It does not: state the card’s peak read speed or guarantee a particular result in every host or workload.
  • It depends on: the device supporting the relevant class combination and bus mode, as well as the card format and capacity being compatible.

The SD Association summarizes the guarantee this way: “All speed class types assures minimum sequential card access performance including multiple stream access (in SD Express Speed Classes) under defined conditions specified by the standard.”
