Use screenshot as the default spelling, with screenshots as the plural. The open form screen shot and the hyphenated form screen-shot are also recorded variants, so they are not automatically errors. If you are writing for a publication, product, or organization with a house style, follow that guide and apply its choice consistently.
The recommended spelling
In ordinary contemporary technology writing, write screenshot as one unhyphenated word. Write the plural as screenshots. Dictionary.com and Cambridge list screenshot as a headword, and ACS Technologies’ style guide gives the explicit instruction “Note: One word.” Those references make the closed form the clearest general choice for articles, help pages, software documentation, captions, and user interfaces.
This is a recommendation, not a claim that every other spelling is forbidden. English compounds often move from two words to a hyphenated form and eventually to a closed form. A publication may preserve an older form, a brand may use its own spelling, and a dictionary may record more than one accepted variant.

Cambridge lists all three spellings, while Dictionary.com lists screenshot and screen shot. That evidence supports a practical distinction: screenshot is the safest unmarked choice, but screen shot and screen-shot remain recognizable, documented alternatives.

Why “screenshot” is the safest default
Dictionary headwords
When a dictionary presents one form as its main headword, that form is usually easiest for readers, editors, and search systems to recognize. Both Dictionary.com and Cambridge use screenshot as the headword.
Compound-noun convention
The Google developer documentation style guide says, “In general, write compound nouns in their closed (one-word, unhyphenated) form.” That is a style principle, not a universal law. The same guidance says writers should consider the predominant convention in their context when dictionaries differ. It therefore supports choosing screenshot for a new document while allowing a project’s established style to prevail.
Editorial consistency
Readers are more likely to notice switching than to object to a documented variant. Do not write screenshot in one section and screen shot in another merely for variety. Select one form, record it in the project’s word list, and use it in headings, body copy, buttons, error messages, code comments, and metadata.
How to use the word in a sentence
As a noun
- “Attach a screenshot of the error message.”
- “The designer supplied three screenshots for the release notes.”
- “This screenshot shows the settings page before the update.”
The plural is formed by adding s: screenshots. Do not write screenshot’s unless you mean the possessive singular, as in “the screenshot’s dimensions.” For a plural possessive, write “the screenshots’ filenames.”

As a verb
Screenshot is also commonly used as a verb in technology writing: “Screenshot the confirmation page before closing the tab.” In formal instructions, “Take a screenshot of the confirmation page” may sound more natural to some audiences, but the closed spelling remains the same when the word functions as a verb.
As a modifier
Use the closed form before another noun: “screenshot tool,” “screenshot shortcut,” “screenshot folder,” or “screenshot workflow.” If your organization has chosen screen shot, keep the space in those compounds instead of silently changing forms.
When “screen shot” or “screen-shot” is appropriate
House style
A publisher, employer, or standards team may specify screen shot or screen-shot. That instruction governs copy produced for that organization. Do not “correct” a product name, interface label, or established documentation set simply because another dictionary prefers the closed form.
Quoted or reproduced material
Preserve the spelling in a quotation when the exact wording matters. You can use a bracketed editorial note only when your publication’s quotation policy permits it; otherwise, leave the source’s form unchanged and use your chosen form in surrounding prose.

Legacy content and migration
Do not change every occurrence automatically in a large documentation set without checking links, screenshots of the interface, code samples, translation memories, and search analytics. A gradual migration can be sensible: update navigation labels and newly edited pages first, then revise older pages when they undergo normal maintenance. Keep redirects or search aliases if readers may search for the previous form.
Brand and feature names
Names supplied by a vendor are proper strings, not ordinary spelling decisions. If a feature is officially called “Screen Shot,” reproduce that capitalization and spacing in the feature name. Describe the general action as screenshot unless your project’s style guide says otherwise.
Capitalization, hyphens, and related forms
Sentence case
In sentence case, write “How to take a screenshot” and “Screenshots are saved automatically.” Capitalize the first word only, unless another word is a proper name.
Title case
Follow the title-case system used by your publication. In a common headline style, “Screenshots or Screen Shot: Which Is Correct?” capitalizes both words because they are the principal terms in the title. A style guide that uses sentence case would write “Screenshots or screen shot: Which is correct?”

Hyphenation
Do not add a hyphen to the default form. Use screen-shot only when reproducing a source or following a style that explicitly requires it. Avoid inventing forms such as screen-shotting when your guide has not addressed them; rewrite the sentence as “taking screenshots” if that is clearer.
Do not confuse spelling with related concepts
A screenshot is a captured image of what appears on a display. “Screen recording,” “screen capture,” and “print screen” may describe different outputs or actions. Choose the term that matches the product’s actual behavior rather than changing the spelling of screenshot to describe a different feature.
A practical decision rule for editors
- Check the project’s house style. If it names a preferred form, use it.
- If no rule exists, choose screenshot. This aligns with the Dictionary.com and Cambridge headword treatment and the ACS Technologies one-word rule.
- Set the plural to screenshots. Add the possessive apostrophe only when grammar requires it.
- Preserve fixed strings. Keep official feature names, quotations, filenames, and interface text as supplied.
- Run a consistency search. Look for “screen shot,” “screen-shot,” capitalization changes, and inconsistent plurals before publication.
- Document exceptions. Add any approved legacy or brand form to the team’s word list so future edits do not re-litigate the choice.

Technical teams should apply the same rule to API references, tutorials, release notes, support tickets, and accessibility text. A useful caption identifies what the image demonstrates rather than repeating only its file type: “Screenshot showing the consent dialog before capture” is more informative than “Screenshot 1.” Alt text should describe meaningful content and omit decorative detail.
