ScreenshotOne MCP connects an MCP-compatible AI client to ScreenshotOne’s website-rendering service. You can use its hosted server at https://mcp.screenshotone.com and authorize the connection in a browser, or run ScreenshotOne’s published local MCP server if you want a local setup. The tools can return website screenshots and Markdown; use direct API integration instead when you are building a custom application or automation and need control over requests and responses.

What ScreenshotOne MCP does

MCP, or Model Context Protocol, lets a compatible AI client call tools exposed by a server. In this case, the server connects an AI workflow to ScreenshotOne’s website-rendering service. Instead of manually taking a screenshot and attaching it to a prompt, you can ask the connected client to render a page or retrieve page content through the available tools.

ScreenshotOne describes its integration as supporting screenshot rendering and Markdown extraction. Screenshot results are supplied through temporary URLs and can include Markdown from the same render; long full-page screenshots can also be divided into smaller slices. A separate Markdown tool accepts a URL and returns cleaned page content directly. These are vendor-described capabilities, not independent measurements of rendering accuracy or speed. See ScreenshotOne’s integration page for its current tool details.

Screenshot versus Markdown

A screenshot preserves visual information: layout, images, colors, and the arrangement of page elements. Markdown is text-first and is generally easier to scan when the task is to understand or summarize written content. A screenshot can help an AI client inspect visual presentation, while Markdown extraction can provide page text without requiring the client to interpret a rendered image.

Long pages and temporary results

For a long page, ScreenshotOne says it can split a full-page screenshot into smaller slices. That can make a large visual result easier to work with in an AI-client conversation. Screenshot URLs are temporary, so treat them as results for the workflow rather than permanent image hosting; save or process a result elsewhere if you need to keep it beyond its available period.

Choose hosted MCP, local MCP, or the API

Option How it connects Best fit Credential and control considerations
Hosted MCP Connect a compatible client to ScreenshotOne’s remote server and authorize in a browser. Using ScreenshotOne tools from an AI client without installing a local server. ScreenshotOne says the client does not need a pasted API key. Manage or revoke connected clients in the dashboard’s Integrations area.
Local MCP Run the official server implementation locally, following its repository README. Developers who want to run the MCP server locally and configure its API-key environment variable. The README describes supplying SCREENSHOTONE_API_KEY. This involves local runtime and dependency setup.
Direct API Your application or automation sends requests to ScreenshotOne’s API. Custom integrations that need more control over request and response handling. It is an API integration rather than an MCP server connection inside an AI client.

These are differences in setup and intended workflow, not evidence that one option is faster, more reliable, or more secure. ScreenshotOne positions MCP for work conducted through an AI client and direct API integration for custom applications and automation. Its local implementation is published at the ScreenshotOne MCP Server repository; the repository states that the project is MIT licensed.

Connect the hosted ScreenshotOne MCP server

The hosted server is the simplest route if your MCP client supports remote servers and browser-based authorization. ScreenshotOne announced its hosted MCP server on August 31, 2026; availability and setup details can change, so use the current ScreenshotOne MCP documentation alongside the setup controls in your client.

  1. Check that your client supports remote MCP servers. The exact settings page and configuration flow depend on the client. Follow that client’s current instructions for adding a remote MCP server; do not assume all clients use the same labels or screens.
  2. Add the hosted server URL. Use https://mcp.screenshotone.com as the server address where the client requests a remote MCP endpoint.
  3. Complete browser authorization. When prompted, sign in and approve the ScreenshotOne connection in the browser. The hosted flow is described by ScreenshotOne as OAuth authorization; the client does not need a ScreenshotOne API key pasted into its configuration.
  4. Try a small, public URL first. Ask the client to use a ScreenshotOne screenshot tool on a page you can access, or request Markdown extraction for a page whose text you want to inspect. Confirm the returned result type before building a larger workflow around it.
  5. Review connected clients when needed. ScreenshotOne says you can inspect connected clients, rotate your API key, or revoke access from the dashboard’s Integrations area. Revoke a connection there if you no longer want that client authorized.

Hosted authorization does not mean no data is processed: the service must receive the page URL and perform the requested rendering or extraction. Avoid sending URLs or page content that you are not permitted to share with the service, and review the vendor’s current documentation and terms for details relevant to your use.

Run the local MCP server

Choose the local route if you specifically want to run ScreenshotOne’s MCP implementation on your machine or development environment. It requires local setup, unlike the hosted option. The official repository README describes installing dependencies, building the project, and providing an API key through the SCREENSHOTONE_API_KEY environment variable.

  1. Review the repository requirements. Check the current README at github.com/screenshotone/mcp for the runtime, dependency, and build instructions that apply to its current version.
  2. Install and build as the README directs. Follow the repository’s commands rather than copying commands from an older guide; install and build steps can change as the project changes.
  3. Provide the API key through the environment. Configure SCREENSHOTONE_API_KEY in the environment used to launch the server. Keep the secret out of source code and shared configuration files.
  4. Point your MCP client at the local server. Use the launch and client-configuration details in the repository README. The available sources do not establish a universal client configuration format, so use the instructions for your specific client.
  5. Test one tool call. Ask the client for a screenshot or Markdown result from an accessible URL. If it cannot discover or call the tools, check the server process, environment variable, and client configuration before troubleshooting the target page.

Local hosting gives you a different operating arrangement from the vendor-hosted server, but it is not by itself a guarantee about data handling or security. The repository identifies the project as MIT licensed; licensing does not replace your review of the code, dependencies, and key-handling practices.

Use ScreenshotOne MCP in an AI workflow

Once the server is connected, request the result that matches the task rather than treating every web question as a screenshot problem.

  • Use a screenshot when the task depends on visual structure, such as asking an agent to inspect a page’s layout or visible content.
  • Use Markdown extraction when the goal is to read or summarize page text. The integration’s separate Markdown tool accepts a URL and returns cleaned page content.
  • Use a full-page capture or slices when content extends beyond the initial viewport. ScreenshotOne says long full-page results can be split into smaller slices.
  • Check the result, not just the tool call. Confirm that the output corresponds to the intended URL and that the image or extracted text contains the material your task requires.

Tool names and exact parameters can depend on the client’s current presentation of the server. The official integration page describes the capabilities, but the reviewed documentation does not establish identical prompt syntax or UI labels across every MCP client. For client-specific setup, use that client’s documentation rather than assuming another client’s configuration will transfer unchanged.

Or skip the browser setup

If your goal is simply to get a website screenshot in your own code, ScreenshotNeo offers a direct screenshot API rather than requiring you to connect an MCP server. It is the first alternative to try for a screenshot API: cookie banners, popups, and chat widgets are removed before capture, and only clean shots are billed. Bot checks, blank pages, and failed loads are not billed. Its MCP server also lets AI agents take screenshots. See ScreenshotNeo for the service and the ScreenshotNeo API documentation for request options.

The following cURL request saves a WebP screenshot. Replace YOUR_API_KEY with your ScreenshotNeo key and change the target URL as needed.

curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp

Equivalent Python request:

import requests

r = requests.get(
    "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot",
    params={"access_key": "YOUR_API_KEY", "url": "https://stripe.com"},
    timeout=90,
)
open("shot.webp", "wb").write(r.content)

Equivalent Node.js request:

const q = new URLSearchParams({ access_key: 'YOUR_API_KEY', url: 'https://stripe.com' });
const res = await fetch(`https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot?${q}`);

ScreenshotNeo includes 1,000 screenshots a month on its free plan with no card required; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000 shots. The API’s response includes page-verdict and billing headers, so you can distinguish clean captures from unbilled failures or cache hits. Sign up for ScreenshotNeo’s free plan to try it with 1,000 screenshots per month and no card.

Costs and usage to check

ScreenshotOne’s MCP overview says each tool call uses one ScreenshotOne API credit and lists a free allowance of 100 credits per month without a credit card. These are vendor-stated account terms, not independent usage measurements, and offers can change. Confirm the current allowance and account pricing on ScreenshotOne’s MCP page before estimating recurring usage.

For planning, count tool calls rather than only user prompts: one prompt may cause an AI client to make multiple tool calls depending on the workflow. The stated one-credit-per-call term provides a starting point, but check the account’s usage view and current terms to understand how your actual client uses credits.

Troubleshooting

The client cannot connect to the hosted server

Confirm that the client supports remote MCP servers and that its server address is exactly https://mcp.screenshotone.com. Retry the browser authorization flow if it did not complete. If the client’s setup differs from the documentation, follow its current remote-server instructions; client-specific labels and configuration are not established as universal.

The browser authorization did not finish or the connection stopped working

Complete the sign-in and approval in the browser window opened by the client. Then inspect the connected-client list in ScreenshotOne’s Integrations area. If the connection is no longer present, add it again through the client; if you no longer trust a connection, revoke it from Integrations.

The local server fails to start

Compare your runtime, dependency installation, and build steps with the current repository README. Check that SCREENSHOTONE_API_KEY is available to the process that launches the server; defining it in a different terminal or environment may not make it available to the client-launched process.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The client starts but cannot call tools

Check whether the MCP client is configured to launch or connect to the server you intended, then restart the server and client after changing configuration. For hosted MCP, verify that authorization is complete. For local MCP, verify that the server starts without an error and receives its key. The exact diagnostic messages and client settings vary, so compare them with the relevant client and repository documentation.

The screenshot or Markdown result is not what you expected

Check the requested URL and whether the page is publicly accessible to the rendering service. Try the Markdown tool if the task is about text, or a screenshot if it depends on visual layout. For a long page, use the documented full-page and slicing behavior where supported. The available product materials do not establish a guarantee that every site, page state, or access-controlled page will render successfully.

Is ScreenshotOne MCP right for you?

Choose the hosted MCP connection when you want to invoke ScreenshotOne through a compatible AI client and prefer not to install a local server or paste an API key into that client. Choose the local implementation when you want to run the published server yourself and are prepared to install, build, and configure it. Choose the direct API when the screenshot or extraction is part of an application or automation that needs request-level control rather than an AI-client tool workflow. For image-oriented work, use screenshot tools; for text-oriented reading, the Markdown tool may be the more direct result.

ScreenshotOne’s hosted MCP server announcement is dated August 31, 2026. The current integration and usage terms should be checked in the linked documentation because setup and credit offers can change.
