Read the API response before changing credentials
ScreenshotMachine documents API error codes in the X-Screenshotmachine-Response response header. Read that header before rotating keys or changing other request settings. The API may also return an error image containing text, but the header is the explicit code-bearing signal in its API documentation.

The quoted descriptions for the first three codes in the vendor documentation are “Specified customer key is invalid,” “Customer key is missing in your request,” and “Provided hash is invalid.”
Send the key using the documented endpoint and parameter
The website screenshot API uses an HTTP GET request to https://api.screenshotmachine.com/. Send the account’s customer key as key and the page to capture as url. A minimal request in cURL is:

-o screenshot.pngReplace YOUR_CUSTOMER_KEY with the key from the relevant account, and replace the example URL with the page to capture. URL-encoding the target avoids breaking the query string when the URL contains reserved characters.
Fix invalid_hash when a secret phrase is configured
A secret phrase is a separate account setting. If one is configured, ScreenshotMachine says requests with a missing or incorrect hash are ignored. The documented hash is the MD5 digest of the URL parameter value concatenated directly with the secret phrase. The hash must use the exact URL value sent in the request; differences in encoding or URL text can produce a different digest.

- Check the account settings to determine whether a secret phrase is configured.
- If there is one, concatenate the exact
urlparameter value with the secret phrase, with no extra separator, and calculate its MD5 hash as documented by ScreenshotMachine. - Send that result in the
hashparameter along withkeyandurl. - If no secret phrase is configured, the official code samples leave the phrase empty and omit
hash; do not add a guessed hash.
For example, with a secret phrase, the request needs the conceptual form ?key=YOUR_CUSTOMER_KEY&url=EXACT_URL_VALUE&hash=CALCULATED_MD5. This is a shape example, not a ready-to-run hash: the value depends on your exact URL and private phrase. Do not publish or log the secret phrase.
When invalid_key persists
The public API documentation cannot confirm whether a particular customer key is active, disabled, or otherwise valid for an individual account. Sign in to the account that issued the key and verify that you copied its customer key, rather than a different credential or a key from another account. If that key still receives invalid_key, ask ScreenshotMachine to check the account-specific status. Its contact page directs API questions to its contact form.

Do not upgrade a plan merely to fix invalid_key. ScreenshotMachine documents exhausted credits separately as no_credits; its pricing page describes plans, but a subscription is not an authentication fix.
Common troubleshooting mistakes
- Using the wrong parameter name: send the key as
key, notaccess_keyor another name. - Omitting the target URL: include the required
urlparameter as well as the key. - Treating every failure as a bad key: use the response header to distinguish a missing key, a hash mismatch, exhausted credits, or an invalid or protected target URL.
- Hashing a different URL string: calculate the hash from the exact URL parameter value included in the request.
- Assuming public docs can verify your credential: they describe error meanings, not the live status of your account’s key.
