Do not append a target URL containing & directly to the Screenshotlayer request: those characters can be interpreted as separators in the outer query rather than as part of the target address. Screenshotlayer’s specification requires an absolute target URL with http:// or https://, but does not document precisely how it decodes nested URLs, so treat parameter serialization as standard client practice—not a provider-specific guarantee.
Why nested URLs break
A Screenshotlayer request has its own query string, including required access_key and url parameters. The target site address may also have a query string. For example, https://example.com/search?q=red&sort=recent is one target URL, even though it contains an ampersand.
In a URL query, & separates parameters and # begins a fragment. Percent encoding represents reserved characters as a percent sign followed by hexadecimal digits. The characters therefore have to be interpreted in the context where they appear; encoding is not a matter of replacing every special character the same way. See MDN’s percent-encoding reference.
If you manually concatenate the target into the Screenshotlayer endpoint, an inner ampersand can look like the start of another outer parameter. The same risk applies to other reserved characters, including +, %, and =. Build the outer query using your language’s URL or query-parameter API, supplying the raw target address as one parameter value.

Build the request without double-encoding
- Use Screenshotlayer’s capture endpoint,
https://api.screenshotlayer.com/api/capture, with the requiredaccess_keyandurlparameters. The target must include its scheme,http://orhttps://. See the Screenshotlayer API specification. - Give the query builder the complete, raw target URL as the value of
url, including its path and inner query parameters. - Let the client encode the outer query. Do not pre-encode the target and then pass it through a serializer that encodes it again; that can turn percent signs into
%25and alter the intended value. - Inspect the final request URL or parameters. There should be one outer
urlparameter, and its serialized value should represent the target’s complete path and inner query.
For instance, conceptually pass https://example.com/search?q=red&sort=recent#results as one value—not as several manually joined outer parameters. A standard query builder handles context-sensitive serialization; spaces may appear as %20 or, in form-style query serialization, as +. See MDN’s reference on encoding URI components.
The fragment requires a separate distinction: fragments ordinarily are not sent to the destination web server as part of an HTTP request. If you need the screenshot renderer to navigate to a particular in-page fragment, verify Screenshotlayer’s behavior rather than assuming that passing the fragment guarantees it.

Read the error before changing the URL
Screenshotlayer documents failed requests as returning an error code, an internal error type, and an info field with plain-text suggestions. Its listed errors distinguish URL problems from credential and usage problems:
210 invalid_url: check that the target is a complete absolute URL with its HTTP or HTTPS scheme, and that the serialized parameter still represents the intended address.101 missing_access_key: include the requiredaccess_key.101 invalid_access_key: check that the key is valid and is being sent under the correct parameter name.104 usage_limit_reached: the account has reached its applicable usage limit; changing URL encoding will not fix that error.
These codes and required parameters are listed in the Screenshotlayer specification. Diagnose the returned error type instead of treating every failed capture as an encoding fault.

When the capture works but looks stale
If the request succeeds but returns an earlier image, check caching rather than rewriting the URL. Screenshotlayer’s FAQ states a default screenshot cache duration of 2,592,000 seconds (30 days) and says the ttl parameter can set a lower duration.
