Edge called this feature Web Capture in older releases; Microsoft now labels it Screenshot. The exact controls can vary by browser version, device, market, and administrator policy.
How to take a screenshot in Microsoft Edge
Use the built-in Screenshot feature when you need a quick image of a webpage or PDF without installing software.
- Open the webpage or PDF in Edge. Wait for the content you need to appear.
- Start Screenshot with Ctrl+Shift+S. You can also open the three-dot Settings and more menu and choose Screenshot, or right-click the page and choose the Screenshot command when it is available.
- Choose Capture full page for the complete document, or choose the area option and drag over the region you need.
- Review the result. Use the pen or touch inking tools to mark it up if required.
- Copy the image to the clipboard for use in another application, or save it as a file.
Microsoft says captures can be pasted into applications including Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and OneNote. Menu wording in Microsoft’s January 2, 2024 tutorial is guidance rather than a guarantee that every current build uses identical labels.
Full-page versus area capture
Full-page capture
Full-page mode is suited to documentation, receipts, long articles, and bug reports where the reader needs context beyond the visible viewport. It captures the page rather than only the portion currently shown on screen. Very long or highly interactive pages can still produce unexpected results if their layout changes while Edge is processing the capture.

Selected-area capture
Area capture is better when you need one chart, form, paragraph, or error message. Drag around the relevant content, then adjust the selection before accepting it. This avoids sharing unrelated personal information that happens to be elsewhere on the page.
Web and PDF content
Microsoft’s policy documentation describes Screenshot as working with web and PDF content. If a PDF opens in a separate viewer tab, invoke Screenshot from that tab rather than from the page that linked to it.
Annotating, copying, and saving
After capture, Edge provides inking controls for markup with a pen or touch input. Markup is useful for circling a control, drawing an arrow to a defect, or adding a brief handwritten note. A physical stylus is not required; Microsoft describes pen and touch as supported input methods, not as a prerequisite.
- Copy: places the result on the clipboard so you can paste it into a document, ticket, chat, or email.
- Save: writes the captured image to a file for later use.
- Annotate first: add marks before copying or saving when the recipient needs the explanation embedded in the image.
Use area capture instead of drawing over sensitive text. Inking highlights information but does not reliably remove the underlying pixels; redact confidential data by excluding it from the selection or editing the saved image in a dedicated redaction tool.

Where did Web Capture go?
Web Capture was renamed Screenshot. The keyboard shortcut remains Ctrl+Shift+S in Microsoft’s current guidance. If you cannot find the command, check the three-dot menu, the page context menu, and Edge’s Settings and more options. A managed device can hide or disable the command through policy.
Supported devices and version caveats
Microsoft’s policy documentation lists Screenshot support on Windows and macOS starting with Edge version 87. That policy table lists Android and iOS as unsupported for this policy feature. This does not mean every consumer installation has identical behavior: Microsoft’s feature page warns that availability and functionality vary by device, market, and browser version.
- On a managed computer, an administrator may control whether Screenshot appears.
- Older Edge builds may still show historical Web Capture wording or lack newer controls.
- Mobile Edge should not be assumed to offer the desktop Screenshot workflow.
- For a repeatable team process, record the Edge version and operating system with the capture instructions.
Moving content during capture
Microsoft says Screenshot keeps moving content—such as videos, GIFs, and web carousels—active during capture. That can help you capture a chosen moment instead of a permanently frozen frame. It also means the visual state may depend on timing. Pause or reposition the content when the exact frame matters, and repeat the capture if an animation changes between attempts.
Common problems and fixes
The Screenshot command is missing
Try Ctrl+Shift+S, then check both the three-dot menu and the page context menu. Update Edge if your organization permits updates. If the command remains unavailable, a policy, platform limitation, or regional rollout may be responsible; ask your administrator rather than assuming the feature is broken.

Only the visible viewport was captured
Choose the full-page option instead of area capture. Some pages change their layout as you scroll or load content lazily, so wait for important sections to load before starting. If the page is inside an embedded frame, capture the frame’s content directly or select the frame as an area.
The capture is blank or incomplete
Reload the page, wait for network requests and images to finish, and retry. Close transient overlays that obscure the content. For a protected page, sign in first and confirm that the content is visible normally in the same tab. A page that requires a bot check may not render the same way to automated services.
Markup, copy, or save does not work
Finish the selection before opening the annotation controls. If clipboard access is blocked, use Save and attach the file instead. On a managed computer, security policy can restrict clipboard or file operations; test with a non-sensitive page to distinguish policy behavior from a page-specific issue.
The result is too large to share
Use area capture for the relevant section, or save the full image and resize it in an image editor. Do not reduce dimensions before checking that text remains legible at the recipient’s viewing size.

Built-in Edge Screenshot or an extension?
For ordinary full-page or region captures, Edge’s built-in feature avoids an extra installation and follows the browser’s existing controls. An extension is worth evaluating when you need specialized annotation, redaction, or sharing behavior.
