Right-click an empty area and choose Take Screenshot, or press Ctrl+Shift+S on Windows/Linux ( Command+Shift+S on macOS). You can select a region, an automatically highlighted page part, the full page, or only the visible part, then copy or download the image.

Use Firefox’s built-in screenshot tool
Firefox’s integrated Screenshots feature is the fastest choice for a single page capture. Mozilla’s support documentation describes it as a way to capture visible parts of a web page or an entire page and then copy or save the image.
Open the capture controls
- Open the page you want to capture.
- Right-click an empty area and select Take Screenshot. On macOS, Control-click is also documented.
- Alternatively, press Ctrl+Shift+S on Windows or Linux, or Command+Shift+S on macOS.
If the command is missing from the context menu, use the keyboard shortcut or add the toolbar button as described below.

Choose what to capture
- Custom region: Drag across any rectangular area. The crosshair shows the selection dimensions while you work.
- Automatically highlighted page part: Move over the page and click the highlighted heading, image, card, or other component.
- Save full page: Captures the complete document, including content below the fold.
- Save visible: Captures only the viewport currently shown.
After selecting an area or mode, choose Download to save a PNG in Firefox’s default downloads folder, or Copy to place the image on the clipboard. Press Escape to cancel.
Add a permanent Screenshot button
- Open the application menu and choose More Tools, then Customize Toolbar.
- Find the Screenshot item and drag it to the toolbar.
- Select Done.
The button is useful on systems where keyboard shortcuts conflict with another application or when you capture frequently.
Keyboard operation and Wayland
Mozilla documents keyboard operation of the crosshair and selection controls. It also warns that moving the crosshair does not work on Wayland. If the pointer will not move the selection boundary in a Wayland session, try keyboard selection, switch temporarily to an X11 session, or use Developer Tools’ element capture instead.
Pick the right Firefox capture mode

Capture an element or automate a shot with Developer Tools
Developer Tools are the better route when a screenshot must target a particular DOM element or be reproducible. Firefox’s Developer Tools documentation describes both a graphical capture button and the Web Console’s :screenshot helper.

- Open Developer Tools with F12, Ctrl+Shift+I (Windows/Linux), or Command+Option+I (macOS).
- Open Developer Tools Settings.
- Under Available Toolbox Buttons, enable the screenshot button.
- Use the new camera icon to capture the page. The image is saved to Downloads.
Capture a specific DOM node
- Open the Inspector and select the element in the HTML pane.
- Open the element’s context menu.
- Choose Screenshot Node.
This avoids guessing pixel boundaries and remains useful when a component moves as the page layout changes.

Use the Web Console helper
Open the Web Console and run :screenshot. The helper supports clipboard output, a delay, device-pixel ratio (DPR), a filename, full-page capture, and a CSS selector. For example:

:screenshot --fullpage --delay 2000 --dpr 2 --filename page@2x.pngOption names and syntax are shown by Firefox’s current Developer Tools documentation; type :screenshot --help in the Web Console if your release exposes help text. Reusing a filename overwrites the previous image, so use unique names when retaining multiple runs.
When a Firefox extension is worth installing
Extensions make sense when the built-in tool stops at capture. The Mozilla Add-ons listing for Awesome Screenshot & Screen Recorder describes full-page, visible-area, selected-area, whole-screen, and application-window capture, along with annotation, blur, highlighting, recording, and save/share options.

Check permissions before installing
The listing requests clipboard input, downloads/history access, browser-tab access, and data access for all websites. Its publisher says image and video content is private by default in its service, but that is a vendor description. Read the current permissions and privacy policy yourself, especially before capturing confidential pages.

Firefox release cycles can affect extension compatibility. Verify the current version, permissions, pricing, privacy terms, and supported Firefox release before deploying an extension to a team.
Compare tools on practical axes
- Capture target: visible viewport, full page, arbitrary region, component, or an entire application/window.
- Precision: freehand region selection versus DOM-node and CSS-selector targeting.
- Post-capture work: copy/save only, or annotation, redaction, blur, and highlighting.
- Sharing: local file and clipboard, or cloud links and team integrations.
- Privacy: a local browser workflow versus an extension or service with tab and page-data permissions.
- Compatibility: Firefox version, operating system, Wayland behavior, and extension support.
Privacy and telemetry considerations
Mozilla Support says Firefox Screenshots collects interaction events such as using Copy or Save full page, but does not collect the page URL or details of the captured image. Mozilla also documents controls for disabling Firefox technical and interaction data, and says the web component respects Do Not Track. These statements describe Firefox’s own feature; they do not establish the practices of third-party extensions.
For sensitive material, prefer the built-in local download or clipboard path, check the destination before sharing, and avoid uploading captures to a hosted service unless its retention and access terms meet your requirements.
Troubleshoot common Firefox screenshot problems
“Take Screenshot” is missing
- Use the keyboard shortcut for your operating system.
- Add the Screenshot control through More Tools → Customize Toolbar.
- Try an ordinary webpage rather than a browser-internal page such as settings or an extension manager, where capture behavior can differ.
The full-page image is incomplete
Wait for lazy-loaded content to appear before starting the capture, scroll through the page once, and retry Save full page. Pages that continuously append content may not have a stable endpoint; in that case capture sections or use a controlled script with a delay.
The crosshair will not move
Mozilla specifically documents this limitation on Wayland. Use keyboard selection, switch to an X11 session, select an automatically highlighted element, or use Inspector’s Screenshot Node.

The result is blurry
Use Developer Tools and increase the device-pixel ratio with the :screenshot helper, or capture the source element rather than a small scaled region. Remember that a higher DPR creates a larger file.
A selector capture returns the wrong element
Inspect the page and confirm the selector is unique. Prefer a stable ID or component attribute over a positional selector such as div:nth-child(3). Run the command after the page has finished rendering, and add a delay when JavaScript inserts the target later.
An extension stopped working after Firefox updated
Check the add-on’s current compatibility and permissions in Mozilla Add-ons, update it, and test in a new profile. If the capture is basic, fall back to Firefox’s built-in tool while you evaluate the extension’s new permissions and privacy terms.

Firefox is the right default for a human taking a quick image. Developer Tools add precision without installing anything. An extension is justified by editing or collaboration features. An API is more reliable for scheduled jobs, bulk URLs, and captures that must be reproducible outside a desktop session.
Legacy Firefox Screenshots project
The older mozilla-services/screenshots repository states that its frontend moved into mozilla-central, its server code is disabled, and the repository is being archived. A Mozilla meeting note dated March 4, 2025 recorded a plan to retire the legacy system-add-on implementation in Firefox 138 and noted that the integrated component had been enabled by default since Firefox 127. Treat those as migration history; for current instructions, follow Mozilla’s current Support article and the controls present in your installed Firefox version.
