Linux Mint includes a Screenshot utility for basic captures. If you also need to mark up an image with arrows, text, highlights or blur, Flameshot is a strong general-purpose choice; Ksnip is an alternative with several capture modes and optional upload features. Mint’s default behavior and Print Screen shortcut can vary by release and desktop edition, so check your own settings rather than assuming every installation behaves the same.
Which screenshot program comes with Linux Mint?
Linux Mint’s documented desktop tooling includes a built-in Screenshot utility. It is the simplest place to start if you only need to capture something and do not want to install another application.
There is not one documented set of defaults that can safely be applied to every Mint release and desktop edition. The utility’s name, available capture options and keyboard shortcut behavior may differ. Open the application menu and search for “Screenshot” to see what your installation provides. If you want a key to launch a different program, inspect the keyboard-shortcut settings on your own system before changing anything.
Which Linux Mint screenshot tool should you choose?
| Tool | Best fit | What it offers | Considerations |
|---|---|---|---|
| Mint Screenshot | Basic captures without extra software | Built into Mint’s documented desktop tooling | Defaults vary by release and edition; verify locally. |
| Flameshot | Capturing and annotating in one workflow | Arrows, highlights, blur or pixelation, text, shapes and numbered markers | Print Screen may need a custom shortcut on Linux. |
| Ksnip | More capture choices and a Qt-based workflow | Region, full screen, focused window, monitor, cursor, delay, annotation and optional Imgur upload | Flathub documents global hotkeys as limited to Windows and X11. |
Choose the built-in utility for straightforward captures
Start with Mint Screenshot if taking an image is the whole job. A built-in tool avoids adding another application and may be enough for sharing a screen, saving a reference or recording a visual issue. If you need extensive markup or a persistent editing workflow, compare Flameshot and Ksnip instead.

Choose Flameshot for quick markup
Flameshot brings capture and annotation together. Its documented markup tools include arrows, highlights, blur or pixelation, text, shapes and numbered counters. That makes it a practical option when a screenshot needs explanation before you save or share it.
Choose Ksnip for multiple capture modes
Ksnip documents rectangular-region, full-screen, focused-window, monitor-containing-the-pointer and window-under-the-pointer capture choices. It also supports cursor inclusion, delay, annotation and optional Imgur upload. Its published platform notes describe support for X11 and several Wayland portal environments, while noting that global hotkeys are currently limited to Windows and X11. That distinction matters if you rely on a system-wide shortcut, especially in a Wayland session.
How to install and use Flameshot on Linux Mint
Mint is Ubuntu- or Debian-based, and Flameshot’s installation guidance documents installation with apt on those systems. You can also use the project’s documented AppImage, Snap or Flatpak options if you prefer a distro-agnostic package route.
- Open a terminal.
- Install Flameshot with
sudo apt install flameshot. - Open the application menu and search for “Flameshot,” then launch it.
- Use its interactive capture workflow to select an area and annotate it. Add arrows, text, shapes, highlights or blur/pixelation as needed, then use the application’s available save or copy controls.
The command uses Mint’s package-management route; package availability can depend on the software sources enabled on your installation. If you choose AppImage, Snap or Flatpak instead, follow the instructions for that package format rather than running the apt command as well.

Make Print Screen open Flameshot
Installing Flameshot does not guarantee that it will take over the Print Screen key. Mint’s existing Screenshot action may already own that shortcut. If pressing Print Screen still opens Mint Screenshot—or does nothing—configure a custom keyboard shortcut for Flameshot in your desktop’s keyboard settings.
- Open the system settings and find the keyboard-shortcut configuration for your Mint desktop.
- Look for an existing Print Screen or screenshot action. If it is assigned to Mint Screenshot, change or remove that binding only if you want Flameshot to replace it.
- Add a custom shortcut that launches Flameshot’s interactive capture action, then assign Print Screen if it is available.
- Test the key. If it does not work, check for a conflicting binding and confirm that the shortcut invokes the Flameshot action you intended.
Flameshot’s key-binding guide also documents shortcuts for delayed interactive capture and saving to ~/Pictures/Screenshots. These are configurable workflows, not a promise that those bindings or that save location are preconfigured on Mint.
How to install and use Ksnip
Ksnip is available through Flathub and is also listed in the Linux Mint Community software catalog. Choose the installation route available to you, then open Ksnip from the application menu.
Choose the capture mode that matches the target: draw a rectangle for a region, capture the whole screen, capture the focused window, select the monitor containing the pointer or target a window under the pointer. Ksnip also documents cursor capture and a delay option; a delay is useful when you need time to open a menu before the capture. Its annotation and optional Imgur upload features provide editing and sharing paths beyond a basic local capture.

Check your session type if a global hotkey is important. Ksnip’s Flathub notes describe X11 and several Wayland portal environments, but say global hotkeys are currently limited to Windows and X11. A capture mode working in a Wayland session therefore does not necessarily mean a system-wide key binding will work there.
Or skip the browser setup
Flameshot and Ksnip capture your Linux desktop. If what you need is a screenshot of a website, ScreenshotNeo is a website screenshot API and MCP server instead: it captures a URL, not your Mint desktop. A single GET request can return a PNG, JPEG, WebP or PDF. For example, save a WebP capture with cURL:
curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp
See the ScreenshotNeo documentation for API options. It accepts cookie or consent banners as a visitor and removes more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups and chat widgets before capture; each of those steps can be turned off. Bot checks, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads and cache hits are not billed, and responses identify the page verdict and billing status in headers. Its MCP server gives AI agents tools for screenshots, page information and PDF capture. The free plan includes 1,000 screenshots per month with no card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000 screenshots.

Troubleshooting common problems
Print Screen still opens Mint Screenshot
The key is likely still assigned to Mint’s screenshot action. Review your desktop’s keyboard shortcuts, remove or change the conflicting binding if appropriate, then assign the key to Flameshot’s interactive capture action. The exact settings screen depends on the Mint desktop edition.

A global shortcut does not work in Ksnip
Check whether your session uses X11 or Wayland. Ksnip’s Flathub information limits global hotkeys to Windows and X11, even though it documents support for X11 and several Wayland portal environments. If your Wayland setup does not provide the hotkey behavior you want, launch Ksnip from the application menu and use its capture controls.
The capture does not include a menu or tooltip
Use a delayed capture where the application supports it. Ksnip documents a delay option; Flameshot documents a delayed-capture shortcut that can be configured. Set up the delay, open the menu or tooltip during the countdown, and capture once it is visible.
You cannot find a capture mode or save location described elsewhere
Do not assume a guide for a different Mint release or desktop edition matches your installation. Open the tool’s own controls and settings to confirm what is available. For Flameshot, saving to ~/Pictures/Screenshots is a documented configurable shortcut workflow, not necessarily the default. Ksnip’s documented modes are available through its capture choices; hotkey availability is a separate issue.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsMint cannot install Flameshot with apt
Confirm that you are using an Ubuntu- or Debian-based Mint installation and that the package sources available to your system are configured. If the package route is unsuitable, Flameshot also documents AppImage, Snap and Flatpak installation options.

Performance, reliability and cost
The cited project and catalog information describes features and installation routes, not controlled speed or reliability comparisons. There is no basis here to claim that Flameshot or Ksnip is objectively faster, or that one produces better captures in every Mint session. For a local screenshot, choose based on the capture mode, annotation workflow and shortcut behavior you need, then test it in your own desktop session.
The Mint Screenshot utility is already included in Mint’s documented tooling. Flameshot and Ksnip are optional applications; the installation information cited here does not establish a price comparison or support policy across every distribution package source. For website captures rather than desktop captures, ScreenshotNeo’s published plans include a free monthly allowance and paid tiers; those plans are not replacements for a local desktop screenshot utility.
