Windows Errors? Fix Them Before They Spread
Repair common Windows errors and clear accumulated junk for a smoother, more stable PC - no reinstall needed.Free scan · no reinstallCrashes, No Sound, or Screen Glitches?
Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteShort answer: put the page URLs and output filenames in an array, call PhantomJS’s page.open() for one item at a time, check for a success status, then call page.render(). Advance to the next item only after the current page has been rendered and closed.
There is an important limitation: the PhantomJS project says, “Important: PhantomJS development is suspended until further notice.” Its documented CLI applies to release 2.1.1, and its QtWebKit engine is not a current Chrome or Firefox engine. Use the method below when you must maintain a legacy PhantomJS job; for new automation, evaluate a maintained browser or a rendering API.
What the batch workflow does
PhantomJS is a scriptable headless browser. The reusable unit is simple:
- Create a
webpageobject. - Call
page.open(url, callback). - Continue only when the callback reports
status === 'success'. - Call
page.render(filename). - Close the page and repeat for the next URL.
PhantomJS references document these operations for individual pages. The multi-page program below adapts that pattern into a sequential queue; it is not presented as an official PhantomJS multi-page sample. Sequential processing keeps memory use and navigation state easier to reason about and prevents one page from overwriting another page’s output.

Prepare the URL and filename list
Each object needs a target URL and a unique output path. The file extension controls the render format, so use .png, .jpg, .pdf, or another supported extension deliberately. Create the destination directory before running the script; PhantomJS will not create missing folders for you.
Complete sequential PhantomJS script
Save this as multi-screenshot.js. The example sets a viewport for each page and optionally clips a rectangular region. Remove clipRect from an item when you want the normal page render.
var webpage = require('webpage');
var pages = [
{
url: 'https://example.com/one',
output: 'shots/one.png',
viewport: { width: 1366, height: 768 }
},
{
url: 'https://example.com/two',
output: 'shots/two.jpg',
viewport: { width: 1440, height: 900 },
clipRect: { top: 0, left: 0, width: 1200, height: 700 }
},
{
url: 'https://example.com/report',
output: 'shots/report.pdf',
viewport: { width: 1280, height: 900 }
}
];
var index = 0;
function captureNext() {
if (index >= pages.length) {
phantom.exit();
return;
}
var item = pages[index++];
var page = webpage.create();
if (item.viewport) {
page.viewportSize = item.viewport;
}
if (item.clipRect) {
page.clipRect = item.clipRect;
}
page.open(item.url, function (status) {
if (status === 'success') {
page.render(item.output);
console.log('Saved ' + item.output + ' from ' + item.url);
} else {
console.log('Could not load ' + item.url + ': ' + status);
}
page.close();
captureNext();
});
}
captureNext();
Run it from the directory containing the script:
phantomjs multi-screenshot.js
The callback always advances, even after a failed load, so one unavailable page does not prevent later entries from being attempted. Check the console output and the files on disk after the process exits.
Control the captured area
Viewport size
page.viewportSize controls the browser viewport used while the page lays out. A desktop viewport can trigger a different responsive breakpoint than a narrow one. Set it before page.open(), as shown in the script. If you compare pages over time, keep the viewport constant or record it with the capture metadata.

page.clipRect limits the rendered region to a rectangle with top, left, width, and height. Coordinates are relative to the page viewport. Clipping is useful for a hero panel, a chart, or a fixed-size visual test, but it is not the same as selecting a DOM element; changing layout can move the desired content outside the rectangle.

Full-page expectations
The basic page.render() call renders the page using the viewport and clipping settings. Do not assume that a legacy PhantomJS build will reproduce modern full-page behavior, lazy-loaded content, or browser-specific scrolling exactly as a current browser does. If a page depends on interaction or deferred network requests, verify the result rather than treating a successful load status as proof that every visual element is present.
Choose an output format
| Format | Use it when | Important qualification |
|---|---|---|
| PNG | You need lossless pixels, text comparisons, or transparency where supported. | Files are usually larger than JPEG for photographic content. |
| JPEG | You want smaller photographic screenshots. | The API documents a quality scale from 0 to 100, with a default of 75; the exact quality-setting call should match the PhantomJS build you run. |
| The result is a document-style capture or printable artifact. | Pagination and layout should be checked on the target PhantomJS/Qt build. | |
| BMP or PPM | A downstream tool specifically requires an uncompressed or portable bitmap. | These formats are supported by the documented render API but can be substantially larger. |
| GIF | Your build requires GIF output. | GIF support depends on the Qt build, so confirm it in the exact binary you deploy. |
PhantomJS uses the filename extension to select the render format. Keep extensions and downstream expectations aligned; naming a file .png while expecting PDF bytes creates confusing failures in later processing.
Make a larger batch reliable
Use deterministic names
Never reuse one output filename for several URLs unless overwriting is intentional. A practical convention is a zero-padded sequence plus a readable slug, such as 001-home.png and 002-pricing.png. Keep the URL list in source control so a later run can be audited.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Process sequentially first
The documented references show individual page loads and renders, not a canonical concurrent queue. Sequential execution is therefore the conservative baseline. It also makes failures attributable to one URL and avoids multiplying the memory pressure of several WebKit instances. Only introduce parallel workers after validating behavior with your exact PhantomJS binary and workload.
Separate load failure from visual failure
A callback status other than success means the navigation did not complete successfully. A successful status does not guarantee that a page’s scripts finished their visual work, that a consent dialog was dismissed, or that every remote asset loaded. For important captures, inspect representative images and add page-specific readiness logic only after confirming that the required PhantomJS APIs are available in your build.

Keep legacy constraints visible
Because development is suspended, modern JavaScript, CSS, TLS behavior, web components, and browser APIs may differ from what a current browser displays. Treat PhantomJS output as “what this legacy engine rendered,” not as a universal reference image. If pixel fidelity to current users matters, use a maintained browser engine instead.
Troubleshooting common failures
“Could not load …” appears for a URL
Check the URL for redirects, DNS or certificate problems, authentication requirements, and resources that the old engine cannot negotiate. First run that URL alone, then test a simpler public page. Keep the failed URL in the log rather than silently dropping it.
Later pages are missing
Make sure captureNext() is called inside the page.open() callback, after page.close(). Calling phantom.exit() before the final callback, or placing the next call outside the asynchronous callback, can terminate the process early.
Every screenshot has the same content
Verify that each list item has its own URL and filename and that the script is not reusing a stale variable. Confirm the console’s “Saved … from …” lines match the files you inspect.
The image is unexpectedly cropped
Inspect page.clipRect and remove it temporarily. Then confirm the viewport dimensions and the page’s responsive breakpoint. A clip rectangle is measured from the viewport’s top-left corner, not from a selected element.

Modern pages look broken
This is a likely engine-compatibility issue rather than a scripting mistake. PhantomJS is based on QtWebKit and is no longer developed. Compare the same URL in a current browser; if the layouts differ, migrate the capture job instead of adding arbitrary delays.
A PDF or GIF cannot be opened
Confirm the file extension, inspect the file size, and test the exact PhantomJS distribution. GIF availability depends on the Qt build, while PDF output can expose pagination differences. Do not rename a file to another format as a conversion method.
Local PhantomJS versus a hosted renderer
Local scripting gives you a URL list, output paths, and process control in one small program, but you maintain the old binary, its dependencies, and its compatibility limits. A hosted option such as PhantomJsCloud documents page rendering, screenshot output, multi-page navigation, and multiple renders; its commercial terms are not established here, so verify current availability and pricing directly.

FAQ
Can one PhantomJS run produce one combined file for all URLs?
The batch pattern writes one render per list item. Combining those files into a contact sheet or a multi-page document is a separate post-processing step; PhantomJS’s documented queue does not provide that combined artifact automatically.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
How can I prove which input produced a screenshot?
Keep the URL and output path together in each array object, use unique filenames, and retain the console line emitted after each successful render. That gives you a simple mapping without relying on the order of files in a directory.
