A screenshot API 403 can come from the screenshot service rejecting your API request, or from the website being captured returning 403. First identify which system produced the status; then check the provider’s error details, request format, key restrictions, account state, and the target page’s access requirements. A 403 alone does not reveal the cause, and providers do not assign status codes uniformly.
First determine which request returned 403
A screenshot call involves two separate HTTP interactions: your application contacts the screenshot provider, and the provider’s renderer contacts the target website. A 403 in the API response means the provider rejected or could not process your request. A 403 reported for the rendered page means the target site denied the renderer access; the API may still have completed successfully and returned an image of an error or login page.
- Read the response body and headers, and note any provider request ID. Look for a structured error code or message.
- Check whether the provider exposes the target document’s status separately from the API response. For example, Screenshot API.net documents
X-Page-Statusas the status of the final document after redirects: provider documentation. - If the returned image visibly contains an access-denied or login page, confirm whether that is the target page’s content rather than an API-level failure.
Google Developers Help summarizes the general meaning this way: “A 403 means that you are not authorized to access the URL you are trying to reach.” The relevant resource and authorization context still have to be identified; the status alone does not say what setting to change. Check the provider request before changing credentials
Verify the endpoint, method, and request format
- Confirm the hostname and exact path match the provider’s current API documentation, including the expected API version.
- Check whether the endpoint requires GET or POST and whether it expects parameters in the query string, a JSON body, or form data. Confirm any required content type.
- Use the provider’s documented authentication format for that method. Do not assume GET and POST accept credentials in the same place.
For example, ScreenshotEngine documents Bearer authentication for POST and an api_key query parameter for GET. Check the key and its restrictions
- Make sure the key is present, active, and belongs to the expected account or project.
- Check that the key is authorized for the API or service you are calling. A key can exist and still be blocked by a service restriction.
- If your provider or gateway uses an IP allowlist, confirm the request originates from an allowed address. Google identifies IP whitelisting as one possible reason in its API-services context; do not assume this applies to every screenshot service. Google Developers Help
Firebase documents a provider-specific example: if an API-key restriction allowlist omits the API being called, the request can fail with API_KEY_SERVICE_BLOCKED and status 403. Apply this only when using Firebase or a service with a comparable restriction model. Firebase API key restrictions
Never paste an API key, authorization header, or key-bearing query string into logs, a ticket, or a public support post. When asking for help, redact secrets while preserving the method, endpoint path, status, sanitized error body, and request ID.

Check trial, subscription, and quota state
Open the provider dashboard and check whether the trial or subscription is active, whether the account has remaining usage, and whether any project-level limits apply. Status-code mappings differ:

These examples are not interchangeable. A provider may use 403 for an expired trial or exhausted allowance, while another uses 401 for authentication failures and 429 for rate limits or quota. Check the service’s own error body and usage page before changing billing or credentials.

If the target website returned 403
When the screenshot service accepted the API request but the final target document returned 403, investigate the target page’s access path rather than the screenshot API key.
- Check the final URL after redirects. The destination may require a different route or access permission than the URL you submitted.
- Open the page through an authorized route and verify whether it requires a login, membership, or other access grant. An API key for the screenshot provider does not necessarily authenticate you to the target site.
- Inspect the screenshot and any separately reported page status to determine whether the renderer captured an access-denied page.
- If you administer the target site, review its access controls and any rules affecting the renderer’s request. Do not try to bypass access controls on a site you are not authorized to access.
Screenshot API.net specifically notes that a target-page 401 or 403 can mean the rendered image is a login or error page, and documents the final page status header for distinguishing that from the API response. Screenshot API.net documentation

Retry only when the error may be transient
A deterministic permission denial, invalid restriction, expired trial, or exhausted quota will not be fixed by sending the same request repeatedly. Correct the cause or contact the provider with the sanitized error and request ID.
If the provider returns 429, follow its documented retry guidance and any response headers indicating when to retry. Keep retries bounded and avoid tight loops. A practical diagnostic order
- Identify the source: determine whether 403 is the API response or the target document’s status.
- Read the details: record the structured error, relevant headers, and request ID before changing settings.
- Validate the request: verify host, path, method, parameter location, and content type against the provider’s documentation.
- Validate authorization: check key status, project, API restrictions, and any IP allowlist that applies.
- Review account usage: check trial, subscription, and quota state in the provider dashboard.
- Investigate the target: if the page itself returned 403, check its final URL and authorized access requirements.
- Retry appropriately: correct deterministic failures first; use bounded retries only for transient errors and according to provider guidance.

What to include when contacting support
If the request still fails, provide the provider name, exact endpoint path, HTTP method, timestamp, sanitized error body, relevant response headers, request ID, and whether the 403 came from the API or the rendered page. Also state whether you have checked key restrictions and account usage. Do not send the key or an unredacted authorization header.

Does an API key for a screenshot service let it access a private target page?
Not necessarily. The key may authorize calls to the screenshot API without authenticating the renderer to a login-protected target site.
Should I retry a 403 screenshot request?
Not until you know why it failed. Repeating a permissions, expired-trial, or quota error will not resolve it; follow the provider’s retry instructions for transient statuses such as 429.
