There is no universal screenshot API limit for page-load time or capture size. The answer depends on the provider, endpoint, and sometimes plan. First identify what the API calls a timeout—navigation, a post-load action, or the entire render—and whether “size” means viewport dimensions, full-page height, or final pixel dimensions.

What “timeout” and “maximum size” mean

Providers use similar words for different controls. A timeout may govern navigation until a page-load condition is met, the browser work performed after loading, or the whole render. Those durations are not directly comparable.

  • Navigation timeout: How long the browser waits for a configured page-load condition.
  • Post-load action timeout: How long browser actions such as taking a screenshot may run after the page has loaded.
  • Whole-render timeout: The time budget for rendering a request, potentially including page loading and capture.

“Maximum capture size” can likewise mean the viewport’s width and height in CSS pixels, the maximum height of a full-page capture, or the final output dimensions after device scaling. Check each separately in the chosen API’s reference.

Documented limits from example providers

The following figures are settings documented by separate vendors, not an industry-wide range or a comparison of equivalent limits. The documentation pages were accessed in 2026; check the linked references for the current contract before relying on a value.

Screenshot API (screenshot-api.net) — documentation timeout is a whole-render timeout of 1–30 seconds; default 25 seconds. Maximum viewport 3840 × 4320 CSS pixels; full-page height capped at 4320 pixels.
Cloudflare Browser Rendering — screenshot API reference actionTimeout has a maximum of 120000 milliseconds. It describes the maximum duration allowed for a browser action after the page has loaded, rather than a whole-render timeout. Not stated in the cited screenshot API reference here.
ScreenshotEngine — parameter reference waitFor is a post-load delay from 0 to 30000 ms; it is not a navigation timeout. GET parameters document width from 100–3840 pixels and numeric height from 100–10000 pixels.
Screenshot API (screenshot-api.org) — REST API reference timeoutMs defaults to 30000 milliseconds and is described as a navigation timeout; the reference also documents multiple waitUntil strategies. Not stated in the cited REST API reference here.

These figures describe vendor-published parameters, not independently measured performance. The cited pages do not establish one shared plan, account tier, or geographic scope for an unspecified screenshot API.

How to find the limit that applies to your request

  1. Identify the exact service and endpoint. A vendor may expose different limits across products or API versions. Read the reference for the endpoint you call, not a general marketing page.
  2. Find the parameter and its definition. Look for names such as timeout, timeoutMs, actionTimeout, waitFor, width, height, fullPage, and deviceScaleFactor.
  3. Separate load completion from extra waiting. A post-load delay or browser action may have a different limit from navigation, and may or may not count toward a total render budget. Use the provider’s definition rather than inferring scope from the name.
  4. Check viewport and full-page limits independently. Confirm maximum width and height for the viewport, whether full-page capture has its own height ceiling, and whether dimensions are CSS pixels or output pixels.
  5. Verify the account context. If documentation distinguishes plan, endpoint, or region, record those qualifications with the limit. Do not assume a value applies to every account or deployment.

Choosing practical settings

A higher timeout can give a slow page more opportunity to load, but it does not make an unreachable or indefinitely stalled page succeed. If the API offers a load condition such as a waitUntil strategy, choose one that matches the page and capture goal. A page that keeps background requests open may not behave well with a condition that waits for network quiet; a less strict condition may return before important content appears. Follow the provider’s supported strategies and document which one your application uses.

For capture dimensions, distinguish the browser viewport from the resulting full-page image. Increasing viewport width can change responsive layout and page length; increasing a device scale factor can increase output pixel dimensions without changing the CSS viewport. Large full-page captures can also produce larger image files and more work for downstream storage or processing. Confirm the provider’s limits and your own output requirements rather than treating one “size” setting as a universal cap.

Common limit-related failures

  • The request times out although the page eventually loads in a browser. Check whether the timeout covers navigation, post-load actions, or the whole render; then review the chosen load condition and any extra wait.
  • The API rejects width or height. Compare the supplied value and units with the endpoint’s documented range. Do not assume that a viewport limit is also the full-page limit.
  • The screenshot is shorter than the page. Look for a separate full-page option and a full-page height cap. A valid viewport size does not guarantee that the entire document can be captured.
  • The output pixel dimensions exceed expectations. Check whether device scaling changes the final raster dimensions relative to CSS viewport dimensions.
  • A wait setting is mistaken for a timeout. A post-load delay such as ScreenshotEngine’s documented waitFor is not equivalent to a navigation timeout or a whole-render deadline.
