To take a screenshot from Bash, send an authenticated HTTP request to a hosted screenshot API and save its binary response with curl --output. Keep the API key in an environment variable, check the HTTP status before treating the output as an image, and use URL encoding whenever the page URL contains its own query string. What a Bash screenshot workflow does
A hosted screenshot API runs a browser remotely, loads the target page, applies rendering settings, and returns an image or PDF over HTTP. Bash is only the client: curl supplies authentication and options, while shell redirection writes the returned bytes to disk.
- Input: a URL, API credential, and options such as format, viewport, or full-page mode.

Choosing GET or POST

Parameter names differ between vendors. Confirm whether “full page” is called fullPage, height=full, or something else, and whether the endpoint returns bytes, JSON, or a hosted URL.

Providers commonly offer PNG, JPEG, WebP, and PDF. PNG preserves text and transparency; JPEG is smaller for photographic pages; WebP often reduces size while retaining quality; PDF is appropriate for printable documents. A service may return raw bytes directly or JSON containing a URL. Never pipe an image response through grep, jq, or other text filters.

Full-page and advanced captures
Full-page capture requires the remote browser to render content beyond the initial viewport. Lazy-loaded images, infinite scroll, cookie banners, and sticky headers can affect the result. Use the provider’s documented option and test representative pages.

Batch support is provider-specific. Confirm maximum URLs, whether one failed URL fails the whole job, response ordering, and whether results are bytes, JSON, or URLs. For a simple shell loop, preserve each URL’s output name and stop or continue deliberately:

401 or 403 authentication errors
Check the key, header spelling, bearer prefix, account status, and endpoint. Avoid whitespace when exporting the variable. Do not print the key while debugging.
400 or 422 validation errors
Inspect the provider’s JSON body. Typical causes are an unsupported format, malformed URL, wrong full-page parameter, or advanced option sent to a GET endpoint. Move structured settings to POST JSON when documented.
The saved file is JSON or HTML
The request likely failed or the endpoint returns a JSON/URL response rather than raw bytes. Use --fail-with-body, preserve stderr, inspect the HTTP status and Content-Type, and follow the provider’s documented download step.

Blank or partially rendered page
Allow more render time if the API supports a delay or wait condition. Verify that the page is publicly reachable, that required cookies or authorization headers are supplied, and that lazy content is compatible with full-page capture. Infinite-scroll pages may require a provider-specific strategy.
URL works in a browser but not through the API
The site may block automated browsers, require geolocation, depend on a logged-in session, or challenge the API’s network. Use documented custom headers, cookies, user-agent, timezone, or geolocation controls only when you are authorized to access the page.
curl exits successfully but the image is unusable
Check that the output directory is writable, confirm the file type, and compare its size with a known-good capture. A successful TCP transfer is not proof that the payload is an image; HTTP status and content type are the authoritative checks.

- Set a client timeout appropriate to the page, such as
--max-time 90, and retry only transient failures with bounded backoff. - Use deterministic filenames and atomic writes so downstream jobs never read a partially downloaded file.
- Cache captures when the page does not change frequently, but define an explicit freshness policy.
- For CI, fail on non-2xx responses and archive the provider’s error body separately from image artifacts.
