Screen recording software saves what you do on screen as a file you can watch or edit later. Streaming software sends live audio and video to an online platform for viewers to watch as it happens. The two are not mutually exclusive: OBS Studio, for example, supports both recording and live streaming.

These are workflow differences, not rigid software categories. Google’s YouTube encoder guidance describes software and hardware encoders as ways to send a live stream. It does not make recording and streaming the same output: a local file and a live feed serve different purposes.
Which one should you use?
Choose recording for a video you will use later
Recording is the direct fit when you want to save a tutorial, presentation, gameplay session, or other screen activity for later editing, review, or publication. Plan for a local file and sufficient storage space.
Choose streaming when viewers need to watch live
Streaming is the fit when an audience needs to see the event as it happens. You need to send the live feed to a platform, so network delivery and that platform’s settings matter.

Use both when you want a live event and an editable copy
If you want viewers to watch live and also want a local file for editing or archiving, software that supports both outputs can handle both jobs. A stream does not automatically mean that a separate local recording is being saved; check the software’s output settings.
Do you need separate software?
No. The OBS Project describes OBS Studio as “Free and open source software for video recording and live streaming.” Its official product page lists real-time video and audio capture and mixing, scenes, streaming, and recording; its potential sources include webcams and capture cards. OBS also distinguishes stream and recording settings in its advanced output mode, according to the project’s OBS Studio Overview. This is useful when the settings appropriate for a live platform differ from those you want in a saved file. The available controls can change with software versions, so check the current interface and platform requirements.
Does recording use fewer computer resources than streaming?
There is no universal resource gap. Both workflows capture and encode media, and the load depends on the encoder, resolution, frame rate, and scene complexity. Streaming also involves live delivery conditions; recording needs local disk space and write performance. It is not accurate to say that streaming always requires a more powerful computer.

The OBS Project’s system requirements page says, “Having a compatible system does not guarantee that it is capable of streaming or recording using OBS Studio.” It notes that CPU needs vary considerably with encoder, resolution, FPS, and scene complexity, and suggests trying the Auto Configuration Wizard as a starting point. The page is dated August 25, 2021, so consult the current OBS documentation for operating-system support rather than relying on that page for up-to-date compatibility details. No universal performance percentage or disk-speed threshold follows from this guidance. See OBS system requirements.
What else should you plan for?
- For recording: Make sure your drive has room for the file and can sustain writing it. If you plan to edit later, choose output settings and a format that suit that workflow.
- For streaming: Check the chosen platform’s current setup requirements and settings. A local recording is not created unless you enable or otherwise arrange one.
- For both: Test the workload with the resolution, frame rate, encoder, and scenes you intend to use. OBS notes that a computer meeting basic compatibility requirements may still not handle a particular streaming or recording setup successfully.
- For audio: A microphone is optional, not a software requirement. Add one if you need narration, commentary, or live presentation audio.
