You can pull Google News search results into an RSS reader or a feed parser without an API key and without a browser, by requesting the search feed URL that Google News serves. The catch is that this endpoint is an observed pattern, not a documented Google API. Google publishes no reference page, version number, or stability promise for it, so treat the URL as convenient but changeable.

This guide covers building the query URL, reading the response, and the limits to design around. “Scraping” here means consuming a structured feed rather than parsing the Google News HTML pages.

How do I obtain an RSS feed of Google News custom searches?

The pattern that current third-party guides and user reports describe is a search endpoint on news.google.com with the query and locale settings passed as URL parameters:

CanaKit Raspberry Pi 5 Starter Kit PRO - Turbine Black (128GB Edition) (8GB RAM)
  • Includes Raspberry Pi 5 with 2.4Ghz 64-bit quad-core CPU (8GB RAM)
  • Includes 128GB Micro SD Card pre-loaded with 64-bit Raspberry Pi OS, USB MicroSD Card Reader
  • CanaKit Turbine Black Case for the Raspberry Pi 5
  • CanaKit Low Noise Bearing System Fan
  • Mega Heat Sink - Black Anodized

The parameters are summarised below. Only the query is the part you choose freely; the others are settings that shape which edition of Google News the results come from.

Parameter What it controls Example value How well documented
q Search terms, which must be URL-encoded electric+bikes Observed in the endpoint pattern and in guide examples
hl Interface language en-US Observed; shown in guide examples, not specified by Google
gl Country US Observed; shown in guide examples, not specified by Google
ceid Country and language edition, written as country:language US:en Observed; shown in guide examples, not specified by Google

None of these parameters appears in a published Google News API reference, and no source reviewed establishes that every combination of them is supported. Treat the set as a working convention that has been reported to work, not a contract.

Build the query URL

  1. Decide the search text, for example electric bikes.
  2. URL-encode it. Spaces can be written as + or %20, and punctuation such as quotation marks, ampersands, and plus signs must be percent-encoded. Do not paste raw punctuation into the string, because an unescaped & will split your query into a separate parameter.
  3. Set hl, gl, and ceid together so they describe the same edition. If you change the country, change gl and the country part of ceid at the same time.
  4. Assemble the final URL. For the example query, the result is:

https://news.google.com/rss/search?q=electric+bikes&hl=en-US&gl=US&ceid=US:en

If you prefer a command-line check, curl can build the encoded query for you. The following is a minimal sketch of that approach, not a verified test of the output:

curl -G "https://news.google.com/rss/search"
  --data-urlencode "q=electric bikes"
  -d "hl=en-US" -d "gl=US" -d "ceid=US:en"
  -o feed.xml

The -G flag places the parameters in the query string, and --data-urlencode handles the encoding of the search text.

Read the feed in an RSS reader or a parser

The response is intended to be consumed as an RSS feed, so two routes work without any browser automation.

  1. Use an RSS reader. Paste the finished URL into the reader’s add-feed field. A third-party guide from Feeder uses this workflow for search feeds and reports checking its example feeds on September 28, 2026.
  2. Fetch and parse it yourself. Request the URL with any HTTP client, check that the response status is successful, and confirm the body is XML before parsing. An HTML body usually means the request was redirected, blocked, or changed.
  3. Store items carefully. The sources reviewed do not describe a stable item identifier, so deduplicate on a combination of the item link and publication date rather than assuming one field is permanent.

What “no API key, no browser” covers

The phrase describes the simple fetch-and-parse workflow reported by current guides. Retrieving the feed requires no account, key, or headless browser. It does not imply any service-level guarantee, a fixed result limit, or permission for every kind of reuse. Those three points are covered below.

What the feed does and does not give you

  • It is a search feed, not your personal news feed. The public route returns results for a query you define. It does not reproduce the personalised Discover-style feed that Chrome on Android shows on a new tab. No official public endpoint that recreates that individual experience was identified, and this guide makes no claims about how that personalisation works internally.
  • Result counts, ranking, and update frequency are not established. None of the sources reviewed gives a number of results per query, an ordering rule, or a refresh interval, so do not build logic that assumes any of them.
  • Article links and full text are not established. The sources do not confirm how item links resolve or whether a full publisher article can be retrieved from them. Design your pipeline to use the feed’s headline, summary, and link metadata unless you verify otherwise for your use case.
  • The endpoint has no published stability. Google has not published an endpoint version, changelog, or support commitment for this URL. Secondary technical analysis, published by cloro under the title “Google News RSS Feed: How It Works and Its Limits,” makes the same point: the endpoint lacks official documentation.

  • Google Feedfetcher documentation. Google’s developer documentation for Feedfetcher, part of its crawling infrastructure, describes how Google fetches RSS or Atom feeds that users request through apps and services. It also notes that public feeds cannot be restricted from user access. That describes general feed retrieval. It is not a specification for the Google News search endpoint.
  • Google’s feed terms page. Google’s page on feeds and terms of use, which the source reviewed in its Polish-language version, says a user may generate an RSS or Atom link after running a Google News search. The same page says users may not redistribute Google feeds. Check the version of the page that applies to your location and language before relying on the wording, and do not treat this summary as legal advice.

In practice, reading results for your own monitoring falls within the feed-generation statement, while republishing the feed or its contents is the activity the terms restrict.

Troubleshooting

  • The feed returns no items. Broaden the query, check that the search text is encoded correctly, and confirm that gl and ceid describe the same edition.
  • You receive HTML instead of XML. Print the first few hundred characters of the body. A redirect page, a consent or block page, or an error page means the request did not reach the feed. Retry later, reduce request frequency, and check whether the URL has changed.
  • The parser fails. Confirm the response is the feed you expect before parsing. Partial downloads or a changed structure will break strict parsers, so wrap parsing in error handling and log the raw response.
  • Items repeat between runs. Deduplicate on the link and date combination described above.
  • Results differ from what you see in a browser. The feed is a separate delivery of search results and is not guaranteed to match the Google News web page for the same query and time. Compare with caution and record the exact URL you used.

The Bottom Line

For light monitoring or internal tooling, the public Google News search RSS URL is the simplest route that needs no key and no browser. Build it with care, keep your parser tolerant of change, and plan for the endpoint to shift without notice.
