Start with the SCP Foundation if you want an open, collaborative fiction archive you can browse by subject. Start with The Magnus Archives if you want a performed horror podcast with a guided episode order and a story that grows across episodes. They share horror themes, but they are different kinds of experiences—not rival versions of the same format.
What is the difference between SCP and The Magnus Archives?
The SCP Foundation is a fictional organization that anchors stories published on the SCP Wiki. The result is a community-created archive, not one centrally authored series with a required reading order. The wiki’s licensing guide invites works based on the setting and explains the attribution and share-alike terms for SCP material.

The Magnus Archives is a produced horror audio drama. In its premise, archivist Jonathan Sims investigates statements describing supernatural experiences. The statements can work as unsettling individual episodes while developing connections to a broader story. Rusty Quill describes this format in its anniversary feature.
| What you’re choosing | SCP Foundation | The Magnus Archives |
|---|---|---|
| Format | Fiction on a browsable wiki | Performed audio drama distributed as a podcast |
| Authorship | Collaborative contributions to a shared setting | Produced series written and narrated by Jonathan Sims |
| Story shape | A collection of entries; no single linear route is required | Episodic statements that accumulate into a larger plot |
| Best way to begin | Choose an entry by interest, then follow references if you want | Begin with the first episode and listen in sequence |
The table’s suggested starting routes follow from each work’s format, not from a measured comparison of difficulty or quality.

Should you start with SCP or The Magnus Archives?
Choose SCP if you want to explore at your own pace
Go to the SCP Wiki if you like reading short fiction online, following a topic that catches your attention, and moving between authors or entries. You can sample without committing to a long sequence. Treat it as a rabbit-hole archive: individual pieces may share the setting without belonging to one fixed continuity.
Choose The Magnus Archives if you want a guided, voiced story
Choose the podcast if you prefer narration, a recurring cast and setting, and episodes that connect over time. Start at the beginning through the official show listing, which points listeners to podcast providers. Listening in order makes the accumulating story easier to follow and avoids later-episode spoilers.
Is SCP like The Magnus Archives?
They overlap in horror and in the use of supernatural material, but the comparison has limits. SCP is a collaborative setting expressed through a flexible archive; The Magnus Archives is a scripted, performed series with an authored episode sequence. If you want the act of discovering many takes on a fictional world, SCP is the closer fit. If you want to follow one unfolding audio narrative, choose the podcast.

The SCP Wiki’s licensing guide says derivative works must credit source works and use CC BY-SA 3.0. The guide also identifies an exception involving SCP-173’s former image, so do not assume every element has identical treatment. The Magnus Archives show listing states CC BY-NC-SA 4.0. These are different terms; check the relevant license source before reusing material. This comparison is informational, not legal advice.

What is The Magnus Archives Roleplaying Game?
For listeners who want to play in the setting with friends, Monte Cook Games publishes The Magnus Archives Roleplaying Game, a 384-page core rulebook available in hardcover and PDF formats. It is an optional tabletop extension, not a replacement for the podcast. Store formats and prices can change.
