A 2023 University of Texas at Austin study used functional MRI (fMRI) and a language model to reconstruct the meaning of speech people heard, imagined saying, or inferred from silent videos. The generated text could capture the gist, but it was not a literal transcript of a person’s private thoughts. The system also required extensive, participant-specific training and the person’s cooperation.
What the 2023 experiment actually demonstrated
The study reported a non-invasive decoder that maps patterns of cortical activity recorded with fMRI to continuous language-like output. Researchers trained a separate model for each participant, then used the person’s brain signals to generate word sequences related to several kinds of content:
- Speech the participant listened to
- Speech the participant imagined saying
- Meaning inferred from silent videos
The result was semantic reconstruction: output that often expressed what the source was about. It was not a recording of the original sentence and did not prove that the decoder recovered the participant’s exact internal wording. The primary study is published in Nature Neuroscience at nature.com/articles/s41593-023-01304-9.
How the brain decoder worked
1. Extended fMRI training
According to the National Institutes of Health, the team collected dozens of hours of fMRI data from laboratory participants while they engaged with language and video stimuli. This is a study-scale description, not a claim that a short scan can calibrate the system for anyone.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
2. A model learned each participant’s brain-to-meaning mapping
Brain responses differ across people, so the decoder was trained on an individual participant’s data. The learned mapping linked distributed fMRI patterns with semantic features represented in the experimental stimuli.
3. New brain activity was converted into generated text
After training, the system predicted likely semantic content from later fMRI measurements and used a language model to produce readable sequences. Because language models generate plausible wording, readable output should not be mistaken for a verbatim readout of neurons or thoughts.

4. Cooperation remained necessary
The paper states: “subject cooperation is required both to train and to apply the decoder.” In practical terms, a participant had to complete the lengthy training procedure and remain engaged during decoding. The privacy test therefore did not show that the system can silently extract arbitrary thoughts from an unwilling person.
What “read thoughts” gets wrong
“Read thoughts” is headline shorthand for decoding selected semantic information under controlled conditions. The evidence does not establish unrestricted access to memories, plans, emotions, private images, or any thought that occurs spontaneously.

Nor is this an ordinary MRI snapshot. The work used functional MRI, which tracks changes associated with brain activity over time, plus extensive computation and participant-specific calibration. A conventional clinical MRI image does not produce sentences, and the study did not create a consumer device that anyone can use at home.
Semantic gist is not a transcript
The NIH explanation emphasizes that generated text more often preserved the gist than matched the source word for word. A decoder might therefore produce a sentence with the right subject or action while changing its wording, omitting details, or combining elements. That distinction matters:

News stories sometimes combine two different lines of work. The 2014 study was a much narrower experiment involving binary, common-knowledge questions and attempts to decode a participant’s true “yes” or “no” thought, including whether the response was independent of an intention to lie. It did not reconstruct continuous language.

| Aspect | 2014 fMRI study | 2023 language decoder |
|---|---|---|
| Task | Classify prompted binary yes/no thoughts | Generate continuous semantic-language output |
| Input | Common-knowledge questions requiring a yes or no | Perceived speech, imagined speech, and silent-video content |
| Output interpretation | A response classification under the experiment’s conditions | Approximate meaning or gist, not exact internal wording |
| Practical conditions | fMRI and a tightly defined question task | fMRI, extended participant-specific training, and cooperation for training and use |
The earlier study is documented in its PubMed record at pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/24844742. Treating its yes/no classification as equivalent to the 2023 continuous decoder overstates what either experiment showed.
Why experts urge caution about what the signal means
Successful prediction does not automatically make a decoder a transparent measurement of a private mental state. A methodological analysis of fMRI mental-state decoding describes decoder patterns as spatially imprecise and highly redundant. Those characteristics can allow a model to predict an experimental label without identifying a single, clean neural location that “contains” a thought.
This is an important distinction between prediction and explanation: a system may generate useful language from correlated brain activity while the relationship between its internal features and a person’s mental state remains indirect. The analysis is available at pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/articles/PMC9238276.
Could this be used without someone knowing?
The 2023 study’s own privacy-related result points in the opposite direction: cooperation was required both to build and operate the decoder. The requirement for many hours of individual training is also a substantial barrier to casual or covert use.

As language-reconstruction methods improve, researchers and commentators have discussed how systems might be tested against deliberate attempts to manipulate or withhold information, sometimes described as adversarial thought-reading scenarios. Those future risks should be separated from the demonstrated capability: the published experiment did not show silent, general-purpose surveillance of arbitrary thoughts. A scholarly discussion of these issues appears at pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/articles/PMC10394252.
Quick Recap
What the result means for readers
- An fMRI-based AI system can reconstruct aspects of meaning from selected brain activity after extensive training.
- It can work with heard or imagined language and with meaning associated with silent-video content in the reported experimental setup.
- Its output is generated text that may preserve gist, not a guaranteed word-for-word transcript.
- The demonstrated system is participant-specific and requires cooperation; it is not a plug-and-play consumer mind reader.
- The findings do not establish unrestricted access to every private or spontaneous thought.
