Use Selenium’s TakesScreenshot interface to capture the current browsing context, then build the filename yourself from a sanitized URL label and an explicit UTC timestamp. Selenium returns the screenshot; it does not automatically name the file after the page or add a timestamp.
Capture a Selenium screenshot and name it from the URL and time
The following Java example uses Selenium’s Java API and standard-library classes. It navigates to a URL, waits for the document’s ready state, captures a screenshot, and saves it as a PNG whose name includes the host, path, and UTC time.

For example, with a project that already has Selenium configured: java ScreenshotWithUrlAndTimestamp https://example.com/products/widget. The output directory is created if missing; a resulting name looks like example-com-products-widget_20261003T203416Z.png.
Selenium’s official Java example similarly gets a file via getScreenshotAs(OutputType.FILE) and copies it to an image destination. The driver-level screenshot is described as a capture of the “current browsing context” in Selenium’s WebDriver documentation. The Selenium 4.28.0 TakesScreenshot API reference also documents screenshot capture by drivers and HTML elements.

How the filename is made safe and predictable
Use the host and path, not the entire URL
The helper parses the URL as a URI and uses only its host and path. Query strings and fragments are deliberately excluded: they can make filenames unwieldy and may contain tokens or other private values. The sanitizer replaces characters outside letters, digits, dots, underscores, and hyphens, so URL separators do not become filesystem path components.
Use an explicit timezone
Instant.now() records a point in time, and the formatter renders it in UTC with a trailing Z. This keeps names comparable across machines configured for different local time zones. The sample uses one-second precision, so two captures of the same page in the same second can collide.
Choose a collision policy for your workflow
The sample uses REPLACE_EXISTING, making the latest same-name capture overwrite an earlier one. To preserve every result, use a finer timestamp or add a unique run/test identifier to the filename, then omit REPLACE_EXISTING so a collision fails rather than silently replacing a file. If multiple jobs share an output directory, a unique identifier is safer than relying on timestamps alone.

Wait for the right page state before capture
Waiting for document.readyState to become complete helps avoid capturing while the initial document is still loading. It does not guarantee that every single-page application, image, animation, or delayed API response has finished rendering. If the screenshot depends on a specific component, wait for that component or a test-specific condition before calling getScreenshotAs.

Selenium documents an element-level screenshot path too; use that when the intended output is one component. For a full-document capture, verify support for the particular browser and driver combination you use.

Troubleshooting
The destination name is unreadable or contains too much information
Keep the label to host and path as the example does. Do not put raw query parameters into a filename unless the workflow specifically needs them; encode or separately store sensitive values instead.
The screenshot is blank or missing dynamic content
Make the wait condition match the page under test. A completed document load does not mean a dynamically rendered widget or asynchronously loaded image is ready. Wait for the relevant element or application state before capturing.

The file is overwritten or the copy fails on an existing name
Decide whether overwriting is intended. Keep REPLACE_EXISTING to replace, or remove it and add a finer-grained timestamp or unique run identifier to retain separate captures.
The screenshot does not include the entire page
The driver API documentation describes the current browsing context. Do not assume identical full-page behavior across drivers; confirm the capability for the browser and driver in use, or capture a specific element when that is the actual requirement.
The browser process remains after an error
Keep driver work inside a try block and call driver.quit() in finally, as shown. This ensures the browser is closed even if navigation, capture, or file copying throws an exception.

Does Selenium automatically add the page URL or date to a screenshot filename?
No. Selenium supplies the screenshot file; your Java code constructs the destination name.
Can I save an element rather than the browser view?
Yes. Selenium’s TakesScreenshot API covers HTML elements as well as drivers; use the element capture route documented for your Selenium version.
