To make a Save Page WE file smaller, enable Merge duplicate CSS images, then choose Save Basic Items for the leanest documented preset—or use Save Custom Items and exclude resource types you do not need offline. Save a sample and check it: leaving out resources can make the page less complete, and the amount saved depends on the page.
Which Save Page WE settings make files smaller?
- Enable Merge duplicate CSS images. Save Page WE documents this option as a way “to reduce the saved file size.” It merges duplicate CSS images; it is not a general image-compression setting.
- Choose Basic Items or customize the included resources. Basic Items is the leanest documented preset. If you need some additional content, use Custom Items and select only the resource classes needed for your offline copy.
- Save and inspect a sample. Open the saved HTML file and check the images, fonts, media, and other page content you need. The documentation gives no percentage or benchmark for expected savings.
The available source material describes these settings but does not provide exact menu or dialog paths, so the steps above use the documented option names rather than guessing where they appear in a particular interface.
What Basic, Standard, and Custom Items include

Basic is a reasonable starting point when a smaller file matters more than retaining every resource. Choose Custom when you know which additional items you need, such as all HTML images or audio. Standard is for cases where retaining the listed extra media and objects matters more than minimizing the file.
Why a saved HTML file can be large
Save Page WE puts the current page and its referenced resources into one HTML file. External stylesheets become internal stylesheets; frame contents and external scripts are included using data URIs or srcdoc; and binary resources such as images, fonts, audio, and video can be embedded as Base64 data URIs. Those embedded resources add to the file rather than remaining separate downloads.

The extension documentation says CSS images referenced repeatedly within a frame are stored once in that frame, while CSS fonts and HTML images, audio, and video are stored once for each reference. That is why merging duplicate CSS images can help in the cases it applies to, while selecting fewer resource classes can avoid embedding material you do not need.
Choose what to exclude without breaking your offline copy
- Need only the basic page and its currently displayed resources? Try Basic Items, then verify the saved copy.
- Need specific extras? Use Custom Items and add only the relevant resource classes—for example, all HTML images or audio/video if those are important to the offline page.
- Need broader media and object coverage? Standard Items includes all HTML images, audio/video, object/embed files, and WOFF CSS fonts for any browser, in addition to Basic Items.
- Considering removing or rehiding elements? Save Page WE includes options related to elements hidden by the page or other extensions. Removing unnecessary content may help avoid retaining it, but the documentation does not quantify any resulting size change.
Lazy-loaded content is a separate consideration: Save Page WE can scroll or shrink a page to load content and can load lazy images in existing content. Enabling those options may cause more content to be captured, which can work against a smaller-file goal. Cross-origin frames may not always be saveable, and scripts in cross-origin frames are never saved.

What to expect from the size reduction
The documentation identifies duplicate CSS image merging as a file-size reduction option, but publishes no typical percentage, guaranteed reduction, or benchmark for it or for the item presets. Results vary with the page and the resources it references. Excluding images, media, fonts, or embedded objects can reduce what gets stored, but may also leave gaps in the offline copy; inspect the saved file before relying on it.
Compatibility note
The Chrome extension listing identifies version 33.9, updated September 5, 2023, and says the extension automatically selects the original or new save method. It describes a workflow difference: the old method remembers the last save location but can fail on some pages in Chrome 84 or later; the new method can save all pages but does not remember the last save location in Chrome. These are compatibility details, not file-size settings.
