You can save some new photos and downloads to a microSD card and move existing files there, but an SD card does not become a universal default for everything on a Samsung tablet. First check that your exact model has a card slot and supports the card’s capacity. Then use My Files for existing items and change the save location separately in apps that offer the option.
Check whether your Galaxy tablet supports the card
MicroSD support and the maximum supported card capacity vary by device. Check your tablet’s exact model and its specifications before buying or inserting a card; do not assume that every Galaxy tablet has a slot or supports the same card size. Samsung’s SD-card troubleshooting guide covers compatibility and common card issues.
Insert the card as directed for your model. The slot location and insertion method can differ, so follow the tablet’s hardware instructions rather than forcing the card.
Move existing files with My Files
My Files is Samsung’s file manager for moving or copying items such as documents, pictures, videos, and audio. The exact screen labels can vary by model, software version, and carrier. Samsung’s file-management guide describes the route for Galaxy phones and tablets.
#1 Best Overall
- Up to 80MB/s transfer speed
- Works with cell phones, smartphones, Android Tablets, Tablet PCs.
- Great speed and performance for Full HD video recording, high resolution pictures, mobile gaming, music and more.
- Water proof, Temperature proof, x-ray proof, magnetic proof
- Compatible with devices with Micro SDHC and Micro SDXC slots.
- Open My Files.
- Browse to the file or folder you want to transfer. Depending on the screen, you may need to open a category such as Images, Videos, Audio, or Documents, or browse internal storage.
- Select the item, then choose Move or Copy. Use Move to remove the original from internal storage after transfer; use Copy to keep both versions.
- Select SD card as the destination. Open an existing folder or create one if the option is available.
- Choose Move here or Copy here, or the equivalent confirmation shown on your tablet.
Keep the card inserted while the transfer is in progress. If you are unsure whether the files transferred correctly, check the destination in My Files before deleting any remaining original copies.
Set supported apps to save new items to the card
Save locations are configured app by app. The following paths are Samsung’s documented examples; labels or availability may differ with the tablet model and software.

Camera photos and videos
- Open Camera.
- Open Settings.
- Tap Storage location and select SD card, if that option appears.
This changes where the Camera app saves supported new captures. It does not change the save location for every app or file. Samsung’s SD-card guide documents this Camera setting.
Samsung Internet downloads
- Open Samsung Internet and go to Settings.
- Tap Sites and downloads.
- Tap Save downloaded files to, then select SD card if available.
This setting applies to downloads handled by Samsung Internet, not downloads from every browser or app. Samsung’s guide documents the setting, but availability can depend on the device and software.

Why an SD card cannot store everything
An SD card is useful for supported media and files, but it does not automatically become the tablet’s default destination for all data. You may need to change an app’s setting or move files yourself.
- Apps: Not every app supports installation or storage on an SD card. Even when an app can be moved, some of its data may remain in internal storage.
- Protected purchases: Samsung says encrypted music and other purchased content cannot be moved to external storage. Samsung’s guide to moving photos, videos, or music describes this limitation.
- Adoptable storage: Do not count on formatting a card as internal storage to make it a universal destination. A January 2024 Samsung Community discussion about a Tab A8 running Android 13 and One UI 5.1.1 describes adoptable storage as unsupported in that context; that forum answer is specific to its device and software, not a guarantee for every Galaxy tablet. Samsung also cautions that adoptable storage can reduce performance in its troubleshooting guidance.
If the SD card is missing or not recognized
- Confirm the exact tablet model supports a microSD card and the card’s capacity.
- Power down if the model’s instructions require it, then check that the card is correctly seated. Reinsert it according to the tablet’s hardware instructions.
- If available, test the card in another compatible device to help determine whether the problem is with the card or the tablet.
- If you are considering formatting the card, first copy any important files elsewhere. Formatting can erase data.
Samsung’s troubleshooting guidance recommends checking insertion and compatibility and backing up important data before formatting.
