Sapphire is better if your main concern is everyday scratches. Casio rates sapphire at 9 on the Mohs hardness scale and mineral glass at 5. That comparison does not mean sapphire is unbreakable or prove it will survive impacts better. G-SHOCK crystal type varies by model, so check the exact reference before buying.

The hardness figures come from Casio Europe’s sapphire crystal guidance. They are manufacturer guidance, not the result of a controlled test comparing G-SHOCK crystals under impact.
Does sapphire make a G-SHOCK more durable?
It gives the watch an advantage against scratches, but “more durable” depends on the kind of damage you mean. Casio explicitly cautions that sapphire is not unbreakable. The available specifications do not establish a universal winner for surviving hard impacts, chips, or cracks.

Nor are the two cited watches a controlled comparison of crystal materials. The MRG-B5000D-1 and GA-2100SRS-7A belong to different lines and differ in other features. Casio describes both as shock resistant and 200-metre water resistant, but its product pages do not provide a matched laboratory comparison of their crystals.

Which G-SHOCK models use each crystal?
Crystal material is model-specific. Casio lists mineral glass for the GA-2100SRS-7A and sapphire crystal for the MRG-B5000D-1. The latter’s specifications also identify an anti-reflective coating; Casio describes anti-reflective coating on the inner surface of cited MR-G sapphire, but that detail should not be assumed for every sapphire G-SHOCK.
Before buying, look up the complete model reference on the Casio product page for your region and check both the crystal and any coating. Do not infer crystal type from a watch’s appearance or price tier, and do not assume a sapphire crystal can be fitted to a mineral-glass model unless compatibility for that exact reference is confirmed.

How to choose
- Prioritize fewer visible scratches: choose a model whose official specifications list sapphire.
- Compare the whole watch: weigh the exact model’s price, features, and expected use as well as its crystal. The cited models differ in more than crystal material.
- Do not pay for an impact guarantee: the hardness comparison addresses scratching; it does not show that sapphire always survives impacts better.
- Verify the exact reference: check the regional Casio listing before purchase, especially when product names or listings are abbreviated.
What the 2026 blue-sapphire MR-G announcement means
On October 1, 2026, Casio announced the MRG-D5000, describing it as the first G-SHOCK timepiece to use components made with blue sapphire crystal in a shock-resistant structure. Casio said production would be limited to 20 pieces worldwide. Its product page labels the watch “NEW 12/2026,” a date after the announcement, so the announcement should not be read as confirmation that it was already available on October 4, 2026. This is a distinct use of blue-sapphire components in the watch’s structure; it does not mean all G-SHOCK models use sapphire crystals or that the standard scratch comparison has changed.
