1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsSandisk’s February 2026 portable SSD lineup has three tiers, with advertised maximum read speeds of up to 1,000MB/s for SANDISK Portable, 2,000MB/s for SANDISK Extreme, and 4,000MB/s for SANDISK Extreme PRO (V3). The 12K footage claim applies to the Extreme PRO’s 2TB–4TB models: Sandisk says its internal test transferred up to 10 minutes of footage in just under a minute. These are manufacturer specifications and test results—not guaranteed speeds on every computer or independent performance findings.
What does “double speeds” mean?
In its February 24, 2026 announcement, Sandisk described the new portable SSD portfolio as delivering doubled speeds compared with its predecessor. The headline figure most relevant to demanding media work is the Extreme PRO’s advertised maximum read speed of up to 4,000MB/s on specified 2TB–4TB models. The announced lineup also includes slower, lower-tier options for everyday storage and creative work.
Maximum sequential speed is not the same as sustained performance while editing or transferring a particular project. Actual results depend on the host computer, its supported interface, workload, and other usage conditions. Sandisk’s announcement does not provide an independent, sustained-transfer comparison across the three tiers.
How the three models differ
| Model | Announced speed | Intended use and protection | Warranty |
|---|---|---|---|
| SANDISK Portable | Up to 1,000MB/s read on announced 1TB–2TB models | Everyday storage and backup; up to 2-meter drop protection | Three-year limited warranty |
| SANDISK Extreme | Up to 2,000MB/s read on announced 1TB–4TB models | Photo, video, and creative workloads; up to 3-meter drop resistance, IP65, and password protection with 256-bit AES hardware encryption | Five-year limited warranty |
| SANDISK Extreme PRO Portable SSD (V3) | Up to 4,000MB/s read and 3,800MB/s write on specified 2TB–4TB models | Professional photography, filmmaking, and design; up to 3-meter drop resistance, IP65, and password protection with 256-bit AES hardware encryption | Five-year limited warranty |
Speeds, capacities, and durability figures are Sandisk-published specifications; actual performance and protection depend on conditions. IP65 applies to Extreme and Extreme PRO, not the base Portable model. Sandisk says these drives should be clean and dry before use. Drop resistance is not a promise that a drive is damage-proof. Confirm encryption setup and compatibility in the relevant product documentation.

Can the Extreme PRO transfer 12K footage in under a minute?
Sandisk says the Extreme PRO can transfer up to 10 minutes of 12K footage in just under a minute, but that example is tied to an internal test—not a general guarantee. The test used 12K (12288 × 6480), 23.98 fps BRAW footage averaging 84.30GB. Sandisk identifies the 2TB–4TB Extreme PRO models for the headline speed claims; it projected an 8TB capacity in its announcement.
The company cautions that performance can be lower depending on the host device, interface, and usage conditions. The result therefore should not be read as a promise that any 12K file, computer, or editing workflow will transfer at that rate.

Which tier fits your workload?
Choose SANDISK Portable for everyday files
For routine backups, school or office documents, and family archives, the base Portable tier is the everyday-storage option. Its stated maximum read speed is lower than the Extreme models, and the announcement lists up to 2-meter drop protection.
Choose SANDISK Extreme for creative projects
Extreme is aimed at photographers and other creative users who want higher advertised read speeds alongside IP65 protection, drop resistance, and hardware encryption. Sandisk announced up to 2,000MB/s read for its 1TB–4TB models.
Rank #3
- Solid state performance with up to 800MB/s read speeds in a portable drive. (Based on internal testing; performance may be lower depending on host device, interface, usage conditions and other factors. 1MB=1,000,000 bytes.)
- Back up your content and memories on a storage solution that fits seamlessly into your mobile lifestyle.
- Take it with you on your adventures—up to two-meter drop protection means this durable drive can take a beating. (Based on internal testing.)
- Secure it to your belt loop or backpack for extra peace of mind thanks to the tough rubber hook.
- From Sandisk, a brand professional photographers trust to take on assignments.
Choose Extreme PRO (V3) for the highest stated speeds
Extreme PRO is the professional tier and the one associated with Sandisk’s 12K transfer example. Check the product name carefully: earlier generations also used “Extreme PRO,” while the current model is identified as V3. Match the exact capacity and generation to the product listing and your computer’s interface before buying.

At announcement, Sandisk listed a $259.99 MSRP for the 1TB Extreme and said the 1TB–4TB range was shipping globally. The company gave later rollout estimates for some other capacities: 500GB Extreme in the second half of 2026 and 8TB Extreme PRO in the second half of 2027. These are announcement-era plans, not confirmation of current local stock or price.
