Samsung’s announcement is not one new RAM stick: it spans two kinds of DRAM. LPDDR5X and LPDDR6 are low-power memory for compact systems such as phones, PCs and edge-AI devices, while HBM4 and HBM4E are stacked, high-bandwidth memory for AI accelerators and other demanding computing systems. Samsung’s 2026 roadmap also includes zHBM, a future architecture concept—not an upgrade consumers can install in a PC.

What Samsung announced

The announcement covers memory aimed at different design problems. LPDDR prioritizes power use and compact integration. HBM stacks memory to deliver very high bandwidth close to an accelerator. Samsung’s published figures are manufacturer specifications and claims; they do not mean these memory types are interchangeable or user-upgradeable.

LPDDR5X: low-power memory for compact systems

On April 17, 2024, Samsung announced LPDDR5X rated at up to 10.7 gigabits per second (Gbps). Samsung said the 12-nanometer-class process enabled 25% higher performance, more than 30% higher capacity and 25% better power efficiency than the previous generation. The company cited support for up to 32 GB in a mobile DRAM package and planned mass production for the second half of 2024.

Samsung positioned LPDDR5X for mobile devices and also described potential uses in PCs, accelerators, servers and automobiles. Executive Vice President of Memory Product Planning YongCheol Bae said LPDDR was expected to expand beyond mobile into applications requiring higher performance and reliability.

LPDDR6: the next low-power generation

In a technical interview published January 8, 2026, Samsung described LPDDR6 as designed for on-device AI, edge systems, AI PCs, data centers and autonomous platforms. Samsung cited rates of up to 10.7 Gbps, capacity of up to 16 GB, and approximately 21% greater energy efficiency than the previous generation. These are the figures Samsung gave in that interview; they should not be read as proof that LPDDR6 is already broadly available in consumer devices.

HBM4 and HBM4E: bandwidth for accelerators

On February 12, 2026, Samsung announced HBM4 mass production and commercial shipments. The company listed a standard speed of 11.7 Gbps, rates up to 13 Gbps, bandwidth up to 3.3 terabytes per second (TB/s) per stack, and 24–36 GB capacities in 12-layer stacks. Samsung reported a 40% power-efficiency improvement over HBM3E.

Samsung’s current product specifications list HBM4 at up to 36 GB, 13 Gbps and 3,300 gigabytes per second (GB/s). The same product page lists HBM4E at up to 64 GB, 16 Gbps per pin and 4 TB/s in a 16-high stack. HBM4E is a separate product generation; the HBM4 shipment announcement does not by itself establish HBM4E’s commercial availability.

zHBM and zNAND-O: roadmap concepts

At FMS 2026, Samsung showed concept models for zHBM and zNAND-O. Samsung says zHBM could deliver approximately eight times HBM5 performance, more than ten times HBM5 memory density and threefold energy efficiency. These are roadmap claims about a concept, not specifications for a product consumers can buy. Samsung also said its V10 BV-NAND exceeded 400 layers and raised density by approximately 58% over V9; that NAND development is related to storage, not another retail DRAM module.

How LPDDR and HBM differ

Both are DRAM, but the design priorities and integration differ. LPDDR is intended to provide memory in power-conscious, space-constrained systems. HBM is built as a stack and integrated near an AI accelerator, where very high bandwidth matters more than fitting the role of an ordinary computer memory module.

Memory Bandwidth or data rate Capacity cited by Samsung Power and integration Typical target and maturity
LPDDR5X Up to 10.7 Gbps Up to 32 GB per mobile DRAM package Samsung reported 25% better power efficiency than the previous generation; low-power DRAM for compact integration. Mobile and other compact systems; Samsung planned mass production for the second half of 2024.
LPDDR6 Up to 10.7 Gbps Up to 16 GB, as described in Samsung’s January 2026 technical interview; package basis not stated. Samsung reported approximately 21% greater energy efficiency than the previous generation; includes additional power-management techniques. On-device AI, edge systems, AI PCs, data centers and autonomous platforms; the cited interview describes the generation, not broad device availability.
HBM4 Up to 13 Gbps; up to 3.3 TB/s per stack 24–36 GB in 12-layer stacks Stacked memory intended for close integration with accelerators; Samsung reported 40% better power efficiency than HBM3E. AI accelerators and high-performance computing; Samsung announced mass production and commercial shipments in February 2026.
HBM4E Up to 16 Gbps per pin; up to 4 TB/s in a 16-high stack Up to 64 GB Stacked high-bandwidth memory; a comparable power-efficiency figure is not stated on the cited product specifications. AI and high-performance computing; Samsung’s product specifications list it, but the cited information does not state a shipment date.
zHBM Samsung’s concept claim: approximately eight times HBM5 performance. Samsung’s concept claim: more than ten times HBM5 memory density. Samsung’s concept claim: threefold energy efficiency; concept places HBM directly above an AI accelerator. Roadmap concept shown at FMS 2026, not a consumer product.

Gbps and TB/s describe different things. A per-pin or device data rate is not the same as the total bandwidth of a complete HBM stack; Samsung’s HBM4 figures show both. The values in the table are manufacturer claims and specifications, not results from a common independent benchmark.

What the low-power improvements change

LPDDR’s efficiency gains come from managing power around how memory is being used, not simply from increasing transfer speed. Samsung says LPDDR5X uses workload-adjusted power variation and longer low-power-mode intervals. In its LPDDR6 description, Samsung adds separated voltage management, Dynamic Voltage and Frequency Scaling (DVFS), Dynamic Efficiency Mode and its Smart PMIC. The reported 25% LPDDR5X and approximately 21% LPDDR6 efficiency gains are comparisons with each generation’s predecessor, not a direct LPDDR5X-versus-LPDDR6 test.

Will this DRAM appear in phones or PCs—and can you buy it?

LPDDR is the family most relevant to phones and compact PCs, but memory is generally selected and integrated by device makers rather than sold as an ordinary end-user upgrade module. Samsung announced LPDDR5X production plans in 2024 and described LPDDR6’s intended applications in 2026; the cited information does not identify specific phones or PCs using LPDDR6.

HBM4 and HBM4E are aimed at accelerator and data-center systems, not standard laptop or desktop memory slots. zHBM is a roadmap concept. These components are not consumer retail upgrades, so searching Amazon for them is unlikely to lead to the actual products. Generic Samsung DDR5 desktop memory is a different memory product and should not be confused with LPDDR or HBM.

How to read Samsung’s performance numbers

  • Compare like with like: LPDDR’s Gbps rating, an HBM per-pin rate and total HBM stack bandwidth measure different aspects of memory performance.
  • Keep the comparison baseline: Samsung’s 25% LPDDR5X efficiency figure is versus its previous generation; the approximately 21% LPDDR6 figure is also versus the previous generation, not an LPDDR5X comparison.
  • Separate announced products from concepts: Samsung announced HBM4 production and shipments in February 2026, while zHBM was presented as a roadmap concept at FMS 2026.
  • Distinguish company specifications from independent tests: figures such as the reported HBM4 efficiency improvement are Samsung’s claims, not a cross-vendor benchmark under shared test conditions.
