Samsung announced a 36GB, 12-layer HBM3E memory stack on February 27, 2024, describing it as a way to supply AI systems with more memory capacity and bandwidth. The company said it could deliver up to 1,280 GB/s and reported AI gains from internal simulations—not independently verified results from deployed systems. The announcement is a historical milestone, not proof of current shipment volume or customer deployments for this exact part.
What Samsung announced
Samsung Electronics announced development of HBM3E 12H, a high-bandwidth memory stack made from 12 DRAM layers, with 36GB total capacity and bandwidth of up to 1,280 GB/s, according to its February 27, 2024 release. Samsung compared it with its HBM3 8H product and claimed more than 50% improvement in both performance and capacity.
HBM, or high-bandwidth memory, is DRAM stacked close to a processor in systems that need to move large amounts of data quickly. Samsung positioned this HBM3E product for AI applications and datacenters, where memory capacity and bandwidth can matter alongside the processor’s own computing capability.
How the 36GB stack is built
Twelve dies make up the total capacity
Samsung Semiconductor’s technical blog describes the 36GB stack as twelve 24Gb DRAM dies connected using through-silicon vias (TSVs), which provide electrical connections through the stacked dies. The 36GB figure is the capacity of the complete package—not 36GB per layer.

More layers without increasing the height specification
Adding dies creates a packaging challenge: the stack must fit within the package’s height constraints while managing heat and mechanical stress between layers. Samsung says its Advanced Thermal Compression Non-Conductive Film (Advanced TC NCF) process lets the 12-layer stack meet the same height specification as an 8-layer product. The company reports a 7-micrometer gap between chips and says the process eliminates voids between layers.
Samsung also says its use of different bump sizes supports signaling and heat dissipation, and that the 12-layer approach provides more than 20% greater vertical density than HBM3 8H. These are Samsung’s explanations and product claims; the cited material does not provide independent measurements validating them.

Why Samsung said it could improve AI performance
More memory capacity can allow an accelerator to keep more data available, while greater bandwidth can help feed data to and from the processor. Those capabilities can be valuable in AI systems, but a memory specification alone does not determine how much faster a particular workload will run. Results depend on the full system and the workload.
Samsung’s 2024 release reported an average 34% increase in AI training speed and more than 11.5 times as many simultaneous inference users compared with HBM3 8H. Its footnote says these figures came from internal simulation results. They are estimates attributed to Samsung, not universal results or independent benchmarks of deployed systems.

Samsung’s published HBM3E performance figures differ by source
Samsung’s pages give different HBM3E data-rate and bandwidth figures. They should be treated as source-specific claims rather than combined into one reconciled specification: the cited pages do not explain the differences.

Because Samsung does not reconcile these values in the cited pages, do not assume they describe identical configurations or revisions. The 2024 release’s 1,280 GB/s figure is the one attached specifically to its HBM3E 12H announcement.

The February 2024 release said customer sampling had begun and that mass production was planned for the first half of 2024. Yonhap’s same-day report also described sample deliveries and the production plan, attributing those statements to Samsung. A plan and sampling announcement do not establish how much product was ultimately produced or shipped.
Samsung’s 2026 Q1 interim report recounts HBM3E 12H development and sample shipping, but the cited passage does not identify customers, give production or shipment volumes, or confirm current deployments of this exact part. Separately, the report says Samsung began mass production and shipment of HBM4 in February 2026. That later HBM4 milestone does not establish HBM3E 12H’s current commercial scale.

What the announcement does—and does not—show
