If a Samsung washer has no power and its door will not open, do not force it. Water left in a front-load washer can keep the door locked to prevent a spill. If your exact model has an emergency drain hose, unplug the washer, drain the water through that hose, then turn the washer off and back on. Samsung says the door should then unlock. The hose and procedure are not available on every model, so check the washer’s manual first.
Before you try to open the door
A locked door may be protecting you from hot water or preventing water from spilling out. Samsung identifies water in the drum, heat after a cycle, and Child Lock as possible reasons a door remains locked. Do not pull hard on the door or handle, particularly after a hot wash, drying, or spin cycle.
Find the washer’s exact model number and consult its manual before opening a cover or looking for a drain hose. Samsung notes that some older front-load models do not have a pump filter or emergency drain hose. There is no universal release latch or single procedure for every Samsung washer.
If your front-load washer has an emergency drain hose
Use this procedure only if the manual for your model confirms that it has an emergency drain hose. Samsung UK’s guidance says to power off and unplug the washer before draining; its emergency-drain article was updated 13 September 2021.

- Switch the washer off and unplug it. Do not work around the filter cover with the machine connected to power.
- Prepare for spilled water. Place towels and flat containers near the lower filter cover. A suitable household bowl or container may be enough.
- Open the cover carefully. Slowly pull out the emergency drain tube while holding its cap.
- Drain the water. Remove the cap and let the water flow into a container. Empty the container as needed; water may continue to drain until the drum is empty.
- Close everything and restore power. Re-cap and stow the tube, then close the cover. After draining, Samsung US advises turning the washer off and back on; the door should unlock.
Samsung’s US guidance covers the case of a washer that is off or a front-load washer with water inside. Its instructions and the UK draining guidance should not be treated as a universal mechanical release procedure.

Do not pry the door open or remove panels to search for a release. Some older front-load models lack the emergency hose, and the right next step depends on the exact model. Consult that model’s manual or contact Samsung support. If water has been drained and the door still will not unlock, Samsung advises requesting service.

For some top-load Samsung models interrupted by a power loss during a cycle, Samsung US says it may take up to five minutes for the washer to unlock and resume. That timing is model-specific, not a general wait time for all washers.

What can keep a Samsung washer door locked?
- Water remains in the drum: a front-load washer may keep the door secured to prevent flooding.
- The drum or laundry is hot: a lock may remain engaged after high-temperature washing, drying, or spinning to reduce injury risk.
- Child Lock is active: controls and button combinations vary by model, so use the manual rather than guessing a sequence.
- The cycle or power interruption has not fully cleared: release timing varies; Samsung documents a wait of up to five minutes for some top-load models after a cycle is interrupted by power loss.
- A drain or door-lock fault is present: if the model-specific safe steps do not resolve the problem, seek service rather than forcing the door.
