There is no universal winner among Samsung Wallet, Google Wallet and Apple Pay. The right choice depends first on the phone or watch you already use, whether your bank supports your specific card, and whether the wallet works at the shops, websites and transit systems you rely on. Check those details before counting on a wallet for a trip or replacing a device.

What are you comparing?

The names can be confusing because each company uses a wallet app or service name alongside its payment name. Their features and availability vary by country, device, issuer, partner and merchant; a feature offered in one market is not guaranteed in another.

  • Samsung Wallet is Samsung’s current consumer app. It includes payment functionality as well as supported passes, tickets, transit features and compatible digital keys. Some Samsung support pages still use “Samsung Pay,” including in headings or legacy references. Samsung announced wallet features on September 10, 2026; availability remains market- and provider-dependent.
  • Google Wallet is the app for tap-to-pay in stores and for storing supported cards and passes. Google Pay is the name Google uses for online and in-app checkout in participating markets. Google’s country information is not a globally uniform feature matrix; check the availability that applies to your location and device.
  • Apple Pay is Apple’s payment service for supported Apple devices. Apple says it can be used in stores, apps, on the web and for transit in some countries and regions, subject to the relevant device, card and merchant requirements.

For the official feature and eligibility details, see Apple Pay requirements, Google’s pages on where Google Pay is accepted and Google Wallet availability, and Samsung’s Samsung Wallet support information, feature announcement and Samsung Wallet developer overview.

Which wallet works with your phone and card?

Start with the device and the actual card you plan to use—not a general list of wallet features. A service’s availability does not mean your exact phone, watch or bank card is eligible.

  1. Identify your current device. Check whether its manufacturer, model, operating system and any watch you plan to use are supported for the wallet feature you need. Do not buy a new phone solely to get a wallet unless you have a separate reason to upgrade.
  2. Check your exact card with its issuer. Card eligibility can differ even within the same bank or card network. Apple specifically directs users to confirm compatibility with their card issuer; Google and Samsung also require an eligible payment method.
  3. Confirm availability where you will use it. Check the service’s current local support information, especially before travel. A feature available in one country may not be available in another.

Apple’s support page says, “To use Apple Pay you need a supported card from a participating card issuer.” For Google Wallet, Google notes: “Some passes or cards in Google Wallet are only available in certain countries, on certain devices, or select partners that support it.”

How does acceptance differ at shops, online and on transit?

In-store contactless payments

A wallet logo alone does not guarantee that a payment will work at a checkout. For Apple Pay in a store, the payment terminal must have NFC contactless enabled, the merchant must accept your card’s network, and the card, device and market must be supported. Google Wallet and Samsung Wallet also depend on eligible devices and payment methods, as well as local merchant equipment and acceptance.

Online and in-app checkout

Google describes Google Pay as a checkout method for participating websites and apps across many countries. Apple Pay appears where a merchant offers it as a payment option; Apple’s availability also has market and browser conditions. In either case, check the specific merchant and checkout flow rather than assuming every website or app supports the wallet.

Transit, passes and other stored items

All three ecosystems can offer more than payment cards, but support is conditional. Google Wallet can store supported tickets, transit passes, retail cards, access cards, licenses or IDs, and health cards; what is available depends on country, device and partner. Samsung Wallet supports items such as transit cards, tickets and boarding passes, plus compatible digital keys, with availability varying by market and provider. Apple Pay transit use is limited to supported systems in some countries and regions. Check the local transit operator and the wallet’s current support information before relying on a phone or watch for a journey.

What can you conclude about security?

Samsung describes several controls for Samsung Wallet: card details are encrypted during setup, an issuer may request a one-time password, a new token is generated when a card is added, and a fingerprint or Wallet PIN is required before payment information is sent to the terminal. Samsung also describes remote locking or erasing through SmartThings Find. Its developer overview states that tokens and keys are stored encrypted using a hardware-based device key in TrustZone and says, “Payment without authentication is not possible.”

These are Samsung’s descriptions of its own controls, not evidence that it is safer than Apple Pay or Google Wallet. The official material cited here does not establish a comparable, current three-way security ranking or provide independent incident or outcome data. Use your device’s authentication, secure the accounts connected to it, and contact your card issuer about a transaction you do not recognize.

How should you choose?

  • Choose based on the device you already own: Apple Pay is for supported Apple devices; Samsung Wallet is for supported Samsung devices; Google Wallet works on supported Android devices and watches. Verify the particular model and feature.
  • Prioritize the card that must work: confirm that the issuer supports your exact card in the wallet and market you intend to use.
  • Check your regular checkout and transit needs: confirm support at the specific merchants, websites, apps and transit systems you use.
  • For travel, verify before departure: check the local country, card and transit requirements rather than extrapolating from your home market.

If your current device and card work with a wallet and the places you use accept it, convenience is likely a more useful deciding factor than a supposed universal feature winner. The availability details can change, so use the linked official support pages for the latest local conditions.
