Neither Samsung nor Whirlpool is the best choice for every home. Choose between specific models—not brand names—by checking kitchen fit, layout, ice and water setup, features you will use, model-level reliability information, warranty terms, and local service. Samsung’s US lineup emphasizes connected options and flexible zones on selected models; Whirlpool offers a broad range of configurations and storage features. Those are lineup tendencies, not promises about every refrigerator.
How do Samsung and Whirlpool refrigerators compare?
The right choice depends on the exact refrigerator and how it fits your household. Samsung’s catalog includes Bespoke, Family Hub, French-door, 4-Door Flex, side-by-side, top-freezer, and specialty refrigerators. Whirlpool’s US catalog includes French-door, side-by-side, counter-depth, four-door, bottom-freezer, and top-freezer models. Both brands sell refrigerators with different layouts, feature sets, and dimensions, so a brand-level comparison cannot tell you whether a particular unit will fit or suit your needs.
Samsung highlights Family Hub screens, SmartThings integration, and flexible temperature zones on selected models. Whirlpool highlights features including adjustable storage, flexible temperature zones, and varied ice and water arrangements on selected models. Check the specifications for the exact model: these features are not standard across either brand’s lineup. Samsung refrigerator lineup; Whirlpool refrigerator lineup.
Which type of refrigerator should I choose?
Start with the configuration and kitchen opening, before comparing screens or specialty ice. Measure the opening’s width, height, and depth, account for the clearances required by the installation guide, and check that the refrigerator can pass through your home’s doorways and hallways. Then consider which layout makes everyday food access easiest.
#1 Best Overall
- User Manuals: Included for easy reference
- Spacious 36-inch Side-by-Side Refrigerator: Offers 20.85 cu. ft. capacity for ample food storage
- Easy Freestanding Installation: Simplifies setup process
- Seamless Counter-Depth Design: Integrates perfectly with surrounding cabinetry
- Flexible Storage with Wall-to-Wall Shelves: Frameless, adjustable glass shelves for versatile organization
- French door: A common option to compare if you want wide refrigerator shelves and a lower freezer. Check the door swing, drawer access, and ice-maker arrangement on the exact model.
- Side-by-side: Compare these if you prefer separate full-height refrigerator and freezer compartments. Consider whether the narrower shelves suit the items you store.
- Top- or bottom-freezer: These layouts place the freezer above or below the refrigerator compartment. Compare access and storage against your household’s habits.
- Four-door or flexible-zone models: Selected models offer additional compartments or zones that can change temperature. Confirm how the particular model’s zones work and whether you will use them.
Whirlpool explicitly lists both standard-depth and counter-depth options. Its catalog’s WRFF3736SZ example is 36 inches wide, 30 cu. ft., and standard depth; those specifications apply to that model, not to Whirlpool refrigerators generally. Which features are worth comparing?
Storage and capacity
Published capacity alone does not show whether shelves, door bins, drawers, and freezer compartments work for your groceries. Inspect the interior layout of each finalist and compare the usable arrangements you need, such as adjustable shelves or gallon-size door bins. Whirlpool’s WRFF3736SZ listing, for example, specifies gallon door bins and adjustable shelves; those are features of that model, not every Whirlpool refrigerator.

- SpillGuard Glass Shelves for Easy Cleanup This refrigerator features SpillGuard glass shelves that help contain leaks and spills, so messes stay on the shelf and don’t drip down onto lower shelves. The transparent design also brightens the interior and makes it easier to find what you need quickly.
- FreshFlow Produce Preserver & Food Freshness The FreshFlow produce preserver helps extend the life of fruits and vegetables by absorbing excess ethylene gas — one of the main causes of produce spoilage. This helps keep your fresh foods tasting better for up to about 4 days longer depending on how often the door is opened.
- Smart Temperature & Energy Efficiency This Whirlpool bottom-freezer fridge is ENERGY STAR qualified, meaning it’s designed to exceed federal efficiency standards — helping save money on your utility bills and use less energy overall. It also uses an Adaptive Defrost system to run defrost cycles only when needed, which reduces energy use and avoids unnecessary temperature swings.
- Accu-Chill Temperature Management & Lighting The Accu-Chill temperature management system helps keep fresh food at consistent, optimal temperatures by sensing when more cooling is needed and adjusting the compressor accordingly. Bright LED interior lighting makes it easy to see and organize all your groceries with better visibility throughout the refrigerator compartments.
- Bottom-Freezer Layout & Everyday Convenience The bottom-freezer design places the refrigerated section at eye level for easier access to fresh foods, while the freezer drawer below provides organized storage for frozen goods. Standard features include a factory-installed ice maker in the freezer and adjustable shelving configurations that let you customize storage as your needs change.
Ice and water
Compare whether water is dispensed inside or outside, where the ice maker sits, how many ice makers the unit has, what filtration it uses, and how much compartment space the system occupies. These details differ by model. Consumer Reports identifies icemakers and dispensers as common refrigerator problem areas in its survey coverage, which makes this a practical feature-and-maintenance trade-off—not a reason to assume that a particular unit will fail. Energy information
Do not assume either brand is more efficient based on its name. Compare the exact models’ EnergyGuide information and, where applicable, Energy Star information. What does reliability evidence say?
Consumer Reports’ article “Most and Least Reliable Refrigerator Brands of 2026,” updated June 24, 2026, summarizes member survey results. Its latest survey group included more than 71,534 refrigerators with icemakers purchased new between 2015 and 2025. The article reports poor predicted reliability and owner-satisfaction ratings for many Samsung French-door refrigerators.
Rank #4
- Dual Ice Maker With Water And Ice Dispenser
- Fingerprint Resistant
- Standard Depth
- LED Interior Lighting
That finding is specific to Consumer Reports’ survey and the models or category it discusses. It does not establish that every Samsung refrigerator is unreliable, that every Whirlpool is dependable, or that two equivalent Samsung and Whirlpool models have a particular difference in failure rates. If Consumer Reports has current independent ratings for the exact models on your shortlist, compare those ratings rather than extrapolating from the brand name. How do the warranties compare?
Review the written warranty for the exact model and purchase date. Compare parts and labor separately, and check what is covered for the sealed system and compressor as well as the coverage period and exclusions.
- Samsung: Its US warranty page says most Samsung appliances have a one-year manufacturer warranty. It describes five-year parts-and-labor sealed-system coverage and ten years of parts coverage plus five years of labor for the digital inverter compressor. Terms vary by model. The page also advertises time-limited offers; check eligibility, retailer participation, redemption requirements, and end dates in the live terms for your purchase.
- Whirlpool: Whirlpool says refrigerator warranties vary by model and are generally one year of parts coverage from delivery. It directs buyers to the model-specific warranty and manual; that general summary is not a substitute for the full terms.

How should you compare the final models?
- Shortlist by configuration and fit. Record each model’s dimensions, required clearances, depth, and installation requirements. Check the route from the delivery entrance to the kitchen.
- Compare the interior and ice system. Confirm the capacity and storage arrangement suit your household; note dispenser location, ice-maker count and placement, and filtration.
- Verify the features you will use. Check the model’s actual smart, screen, and flexible-zone features instead of relying on the brand’s general description.
- Check independent information for the exact model. Use current model-level ratings where available; do not treat a category-level survey result as a guarantee about an individual refrigerator.
- Read the complete warranty and check local service. Confirm parts, labor, sealed-system, and compressor terms, and find out whether authorized service is accessible where you live.
- Get a delivered-price quote. Compare the current price for each exact model along with delivery, installation, haul-away, taxes, and any promotion. Those costs depend on your retailer, location, and purchase date.
So, which brand is the better choice?
Samsung may be a better fit if a particular model’s connected features, screen, or flexible zones matter to your household and the dimensions and warranty work for you. Whirlpool may be a better fit if one of its layouts, storage arrangements, or ice-and-water configurations better suits your kitchen and daily use. Neither description settles reliability or value for every model. Choose the finalist that fits your kitchen, has the features and warranty you want, and can be delivered and serviced on acceptable terms.
