For the standard generations compared here, the Samsung T7 and SanDisk Extreme Portable SSD advertise the same peak sequential speeds: up to 1,050 MB/s read and 1,000 MB/s write. The standard SanDisk Extreme is the better-documented choice for rugged use, with an IP65 rating and up to 3 m drop protection; the T7 is rated for drops up to 2 m. For everyday storage, choose based on the exact model, capacity, host compatibility, security preferences, and current price—not the shared headline speed alone.
Samsung T7 vs. SanDisk Extreme: at a glance

These are manufacturer specifications, not independent performance or durability test results. Warranty coverage and eligibility may vary by region and exact SKU, so check the local terms.
Which one is better for your needs?
Choose the SanDisk Extreme for travel and exposure to the elements
The standard SanDisk Extreme datasheet specifies IP65 water and dust resistance and drop protection up to 3 m. Those documented protections make it the more suitable of these two standard models for a drive that will regularly travel in a bag or be used outdoors. IP65 does not mean the drive is suitable for every kind of immersion or exposure, and careful handling remains sensible.
Choose the T7 for routine storage if its price or setup suits you
The T7 advertises the same maximum sequential read and write rates as the standard Extreme generation. It is a reasonable fit for desk storage, file transfers, and backups when its capacity, host support, current price, or preferred Samsung security setup makes it the better match. The cited T7 specification lists drop protection up to 2 m, but no IP rating.

- Get NVMe solid state performance with up to 1050MB/s read and 1000MB/s write speeds in a portable, high-capacity drive(1) (Based on internal testing; performance may be lower depending on host device & other factors. 1MB=1,000,000 bytes.)
- Up to 3-meter drop protection and IP65 water and dust resistance mean this tough drive can take a beating(3) (Previously rated for 2-meter drop protection and IP55 rating. Now qualified for the higher, stated specs.)
- Use the handy carabiner loop to secure it to your belt loop or backpack for extra peace of mind.
- Help keep private content private with the included password protection featuring 256‐bit AES hardware encryption.(3)
- Easily manage files and automatically free up space with the SanDisk Memory Zone app.(5). Non-Operating Temperature -20°C to 85°C
Compare like-for-like before deciding on value
Compare the same capacity and exact generation at the price available to you. The cited materials do not establish current prices, and a value winner cannot be named without a current, capacity-matched comparison. The SanDisk datasheet includes a 500 GB option in addition to the listed 1 TB, 2 TB, and 4 TB capacities; availability depends on the specific listing.
Check the SanDisk generation before comparing speed
“SanDisk Extreme Portable SSD” can refer to products with different speed claims. The standard USB 3.2 datasheet lists up to 1,050 MB/s read and 1,000 MB/s write, while a separate SanDisk datasheet for an Extreme Portable SSD lists up to 2,000 MB/s transfer speed. These are distinct generations; confirm the precise model number, interface, capacity, and product listing before applying either figure. Samsung’s T7 product page describes USB 3.2 Gen 2 at 10 Gbps and up to 1,050/1,000 MB/s.

Manufacturer maximums do not guarantee the speed you will see on a particular computer, phone, or camera. Samsung says its T7 speed measurement uses Samsung’s internal test standards and the enclosed cable; its stated maximum also depends on the system environment and supported UASP. A host port, cable, filesystem, workload, capacity, and system conditions can all affect results. No independent head-to-head sustained-speed result is established here.

Compatibility and security to check
Confirm the host and file system
Samsung lists Windows, macOS, and Android compatibility for the T7. SanDisk’s standard datasheet describes compatibility with a range of USB-C smartphones. Neither statement guarantees every device or workflow will work. Before buying, check that your host has a suitable USB port, that its operating system and apps support external storage, and that the chosen filesystem works across the devices you plan to use.

Consider how you will use password protection
The T7 supports AES 256-bit hardware encryption with optional password protection. SanDisk’s standard datasheet describes hardware encryption and password protection as well. The cited materials do not establish a setup workflow for every operating system, so check the instructions for the exact product and your intended devices before relying on password protection in a multi-device workflow.

Samsung says, “The T7 can be secured with an AES 256-bit encrypted password and is encased in a sturdy metal body that keeps data intact from falls of up to 2 meters.” Samsung identifies the drop figure as a manufacturer claim based on its controlled internal drop test. SanDisk’s standard datasheet lists up to 3 m drop protection and IP65; those, too, are manufacturer specifications rather than independent validation. Samsung T7 Shield is a separate rugged model and should not be confused with the standard T7 in this comparison.

How to make the final choice
- Identify the exact SanDisk model. Check the product number and listing so the advertised speed belongs to the generation you are considering.
- Match capacity and price. Compare equivalent capacities, then check current local prices and warranty terms.
- Check the host. Confirm the port, operating system, app support, and filesystem for your computer, phone, or camera.
- Prioritize the feature that matters. Favor the standard Extreme for its documented IP65 rating and 3 m drop protection; favor the T7 when it better fits your price, capacity, or preferred setup.
