Choose the tracker that matches the phone ecosystem you already use: Samsung Galaxy SmartTag2 is managed through SmartThings Find on compatible Galaxy devices, while Apple AirTag is managed through Apple’s Find My network. Both can use nearby devices to help locate a tag beyond direct Bluetooth range, but the available manufacturer information does not establish a universal winner for coverage or recovery speed.

Which phones can set up and manage each tracker?

This comparison is specifically about Samsung Galaxy SmartTag2. Samsung’s U.S. requirements list a Galaxy smartphone or tablet running Android 11 or later, at least 3 GB of free RAM, a Samsung account, and registration in SmartThings Find. Requirements may vary by feature and region, so check the local product page and your device before buying. Samsung SmartTag2 product details

Apple’s AirTag is managed in Find My on compatible Apple devices. Its cited technical specifications list iPhone and iPod touch models running iOS 14.5 or later. Apple AirTag AirTag technical specifications

Neither device is an interchangeable owner-managed tracker across iPhone and Android. Android features for AirTag described by Apple concern unwanted-tracker alerts and identifying a found tag, not managing an AirTag as its owner. Similarly, a finder may be able to read contact details registered to a SmartTag2 without being able to set it up or manage it.

SmartTag2 requirements for directional finding

Samsung says full SmartTag2 functionality requires a UWB-enabled Galaxy phone running Android 11 or later. Its Compass View directional feature also requires UWB; obstacles can reduce accuracy. Samsung SmartTag2 product details Samsung’s SmartTag2 launch announcement

How do nearby and out-of-range finding work?

At close range, both products use Bluetooth-based finding. Samsung states that SmartTag2 has a maximum Bluetooth range of up to 120 metres without obstacles. This is a manufacturer-stated maximum, not a guaranteed real-world distance; walls and other obstructions can reduce performance. Samsung SmartTag2 product details

When a tag is outside direct range, each ecosystem can enlist nearby participating devices: Samsung’s Galaxy Find Network for SmartTag2 and Apple’s Find My network for AirTag. A nearby device can detect the tag’s signal and help report its location. Success depends on participating devices, connectivity, settings and the surroundings.

The cited manufacturer sources do not provide a like-for-like measure of network size, local coverage, recovery time or reliability. They therefore do not establish that one tracker is universally easier to find; the result can depend on where the tag is lost and which participating devices are nearby.

What directional finding can you use?

Ultra Wideband (UWB) enables more precise, directional guidance when the owner’s phone supports it. Samsung calls its SmartTag2 feature Compass View; Apple calls the AirTag feature Precision Finding. Both require compatible hardware, and Samsung specifically cautions that obstructions can reduce accuracy. Check Apple’s current technical specifications for compatibility with the exact AirTag generation and Apple device you plan to use. Will either tracker alert you if someone is tracking you?

Yes, but alert support is not the same as owner management. Apple and Google announced cross-platform unwanted-tracker alerts for Bluetooth trackers compatible with the Detecting Unwanted Location Trackers industry specification. Apple says an iOS alert can indicate that another person’s AirTag, Find My accessory or compatible tracker is moving with you. This safety feature does not let an Android user manage an AirTag as its owner. Apple and Google announcement on unwanted-tracking alerts

How do Lost Mode, NFC and battery life compare?

Feature Samsung Galaxy SmartTag2 Apple AirTag
Finder contact information Lost Mode can display contact information and a message registered in advance when a finder taps the tag with an NFC-capable phone. Samsung’s U.S. page says the finder also needs an internet connection. Samsung product details Lost Mode and an NFC tap can help a finder access the owner’s information. Apple AirTag
Battery claim Samsung estimated up to 500 days in normal mode and up to 700 days in Power Saving Mode in 2023. The estimate came from internal laboratory testing with a pre-release unit and included CR2032 battery; actual life varies with use, phone and battery manufacturer. Samsung says Power Saving Mode limits the tag to basic Bluetooth finding functions. Samsung launch announcement Samsung makers’ interview Apple says the replaceable standard battery lasts more than a year. Its technical specifications describe the usage pattern underlying that claim, so it is not directly comparable with Samsung’s estimate. Apple AirTag Apple technical specifications

Which one should you choose?

  • Choose SmartTag2 if you use a compatible Galaxy phone and want your item tracker managed through SmartThings Find.
  • Choose AirTag if you use Apple devices and want to manage the tracker in Find My.
  • Check UWB compatibility if directional finding matters; the tag alone does not guarantee that feature.
  • Do not choose based on an assumed network-coverage winner. The cited manufacturer information does not establish a fair, location-specific comparison.
  • Check unwanted-tracker settings on your phone. Alerts have compatibility and settings conditions, and Samsung’s stated unknown-tag feature is limited to compatible SmartThings Find tags.
