If your Samsung Galaxy phone or tablet is not responding to touch, there may be several causes: a temporary software problem, an accessory or moisture affecting the screen, a setting that changes how taps work, a third-party app, or physical damage. The symptom alone cannot identify which one applies. Start with the quick, reversible checks below, then move to software troubleshooting and service if needed. Menu names vary by model and software version.
Why a Samsung touchscreen may stop responding
Samsung lists temporary system errors, screen protectors, accessibility settings, moisture, and third-party accessories among possible causes. Outdated software or apps, a charger problem, and physical display damage can also be relevant. Whether the whole screen is affected, only certain areas, or the issue began after an accessory or app change can help guide troubleshooting, but none of those clues proves the cause.
Try these checks first
Remove accessories and clean the screen
- Remove the case, screen protector, and other accessories, then test the screen again. This is especially useful if the problem began after fitting an accessory or is concentrated near the edges.
- Wipe moisture from the display with a soft, dry cloth. Make sure your fingers are clean and dry, and remove gloves before testing.
- If the issue happens while charging, check the charger for damage and try an undamaged charger. Samsung advises avoiding touchscreen use while the device is charging.
If you use a screen protector and want to test with it still fitted, try Settings > Display > Touch sensitivity, if that option is available on your model. Removing the protector first helps determine whether it is affecting touch; replacing it is not a fix for a damaged display.
Restart the device
If the screen still accepts input, use the power menu to restart. If the device is frozen, Samsung’s touchscreen guide says to hold the Side/Power and Volume Down buttons together for more than seven seconds, until the device restarts. Button combinations can differ by model, so consult Samsung’s instructions for your specific device if that combination does not work.

Check settings if taps feel different or slow
Some accessibility and navigation features change how the device interprets touch. If you can navigate the menus, check the settings that fit what you are seeing:
- TalkBack: With TalkBack active, one tap selects an item and a double tap opens it; scrolling requires two fingers. This can make ordinary tapping seem unresponsive if you are not expecting the different behavior.
- Touch timing: Look under Settings > Accessibility > Interaction and dexterity for settings such as touch-and-hold delay, tap duration, or ignore repeated touches. These can affect when or how taps register.
- Magnification shortcut: A triple-tap shortcut may make quick taps seem missed or slower to register.
- Gesture navigation: If touches near screen edges trigger gestures instead, test the navigation options under Settings > Display > Navigation bar. Labels and available choices vary.
Update the software and check for an app problem
Install available device software and app updates; outdated versions can cause compatibility problems. If the trouble started after installing or updating an app, use Safe mode to check whether a third-party app may be involved. Follow Samsung’s model-specific instructions to enter Safe mode.

If touch works normally in Safe mode, that is a clue that an app may be involved, not proof of a hardware diagnosis. Uninstall recently added or updated apps one at a time, testing the screen after each removal.
Run a touchscreen diagnostic
On supported Galaxy devices with Samsung Members installed, open the app and use Phone diagnostics > Touch screen to test touch areas and review the result. Availability and labels may vary. A diagnostic result can help you assess the symptom, but visible damage or persistent unresponsiveness still warrants professional inspection.

When to seek service—and when not to reset
If the display has suffered a strong impact, Samsung advises stopping use and visiting a service center for inspection. Contact Samsung Support or a service provider if the screen remains unresponsive after the checks above.
A factory data reset is a last resort, not a guaranteed touchscreen fix. It erases device data and content, so back up first. Samsung also notes that account credentials and network access may affect the reset process. Its Galaxy touchscreen troubleshooting guide places factory reset after the earlier troubleshooting steps.
