Samsung Safe Mode starts your Galaxy phone or tablet without third-party apps running. Use it to check whether a downloaded app may be causing problems such as freezing, crashing, or unexpected shutdowns. If the issue stops in Safe Mode, investigate recently installed or updated apps; if it continues, an app is less likely to be the cause.
What Samsung Safe Mode does
Safe Mode is a diagnostic startup state, not a repair or a reset. Samsung says third-party apps do not run while the device is in this mode, helping you check whether a downloaded app may be behind a problem. Your installed apps are not deleted just because you enter Safe Mode.
Samsung lists freezing, crashes, lag, unexpected shutdowns, and some camera, audio, or connectivity problems among issues that downloaded apps can affect. Menus and button behavior vary by model, software version, and carrier; Samsung Canada’s instructions specifically cover devices sold in Canada. See Samsung’s US Safe Mode instructions and Samsung Canada’s guide.

How to start Safe Mode
Choose the route that matches your device’s current state. The power-menu route is convenient if you can access the on-screen power controls; the startup-button route begins from a powered-off device.

Use the power menu
- Open the power menu. Depending on your model, press and hold the Side and Volume down buttons together, or swipe down from the top of the screen and tap the Power icon in Quick Settings.
- Touch and hold Power off until the Safe mode option appears.
- Tap Safe mode and wait for the device to restart. When it starts successfully, “Safe mode” appears at the bottom of the screen.
Use the startup buttons
- Power off the phone or tablet completely.
- Turn it on. When the Samsung logo appears, press and hold Volume down.
- Check for “Safe mode” at the lower left of the screen. If it does not appear, repeat the steps.
How to test whether an app is causing the problem
- Use the device in Safe Mode and check whether the original symptom still occurs.
- If the problem stops, identify apps installed or updated shortly before it began. Uninstall those apps one at a time.
- After removing an app, leave Safe Mode and test the device in normal mode before removing another. This helps you tell whether a particular app made a difference.
- If removing an app does not help, Samsung says you can reinstall it and continue checking other recent apps.
A symptom disappearing in Safe Mode is a clue that a downloaded app may be involved, not proof that you have found the cause. If the problem continues, a downloaded app is less likely to explain it.
How to turn Safe Mode off
Restart the device to start it in normal mode. Samsung also documents an on-screen option: open notifications, tap Safe mode is on, then tap Turn off. Depending on the model, you may instead need to power the device off fully and turn it on again. Wallpapers, themes, or other customizations may return to defaults when Safe Mode ends; entering the mode does not itself uninstall your apps.

What to do if the issue continues
If the device still has the same symptom
If the problem remains in Safe Mode, an app downloaded from outside the system is less likely to be responsible. The next step depends on the symptom. For a device that will not start or repeatedly reboots, Samsung says a problem that persists in Safe Mode is likely hardware-related and recommends a service center or repair booking. That guidance is specific to boot-loop and startup problems; it is not a diagnosis for every kind of malfunction. See Samsung’s startup and boot-loop troubleshooting guide.
