If your Samsung phone is still black after a force restart, connect it to a compatible charger and working outlet and give it time: a deeply drained battery may not show a charging icon immediately. Check for damage first, then try another compatible cable and charger if needed. Once it has had time to charge, repeat the restart by holding the Side/Power and Volume Down buttons together.
1. Check the phone and charging gear for damage
Before connecting a charger, inspect the phone, cable, and adapter for visible damage. Check the charging port and connectors for bends, corrosion, or obstructions. Do not use damaged or worn charging equipment. If the phone may be wet, do not connect a charger or accessories until it is fully dry; Samsung US gives this safety guidance in its Galaxy startup and boot-loop support article.
2. Give a depleted battery time to respond
Connect the phone to a compatible charger plugged into a working outlet. A completely drained Galaxy may remain black and show no charging indicator at first. Samsung Canada recommends waiting 15–20 minutes before trying another force restart for devices sold in Canada; Samsung notes elsewhere that the time needed varies by model, so this interval is not a guarantee for every phone or region. 3. Rule out the outlet, cable, and charger
If there is still no charging icon after a few minutes, check that the outlet works and the connections are secure. If available, try another compatible charger and USB cable, preferably Samsung-approved equipment. Choose accessories that match your phone model; without knowing the model, there is no single wattage or adapter to recommend. A charging test can help identify a faulty power source, but it cannot establish that the phone itself is healthy.

4. Repeat the force restart
With the phone disconnected from any computer, press and hold the Side/Power button and Volume Down together. Keep holding until the phone vibrates or the Samsung logo appears. Samsung India specifies at least seven seconds, while Samsung Canada notes the logo can take ten seconds or longer; timing varies by model. Remove the case if it prevents you from pressing both buttons at the same time. Samsung’s India support instructions describe the button combination.
5. Select Normal Boot if a menu appears
If the phone opens Maintenance Boot Mode, use the volume buttons to highlight Normal Boot, then press the Side/Power button to select it. A force restart is not a factory reset: Samsung Philippines says a correctly performed forced restart does not erase information. A factory reset is different and removes personal data, so do not select a reset option as a troubleshooting shortcut.

6. Get the phone inspected if it remains unresponsive
If charging with working, compatible equipment and repeating the force restart do not restore the phone, contact Samsung support or arrange inspection at a service center. Do the same if the phone has visible impact damage or may have been exposed to liquid. A black screen alone cannot confirm whether the device is off or whether its display has failed, so avoid assuming a specific fault without an inspection. Samsung’s regional support guidance also recommends service when these steps do not resolve the problem.
