To make a Samsung phone last longer between charges, first check which apps use the most battery, then reduce screen brightness and timeout, use Power saving when its limits are acceptable, and restrict background activity for apps that do not need to run continuously. The right menu names and available controls vary by Galaxy model, software version, and region.
Find what is draining the battery
Start with battery usage rather than changing several settings at once. Open Settings > Battery and review the apps using the most power. On some Galaxy phones or software versions, battery information may be inside Settings > Device care. Samsung’s instructions vary by device, so use the closest matching option on your phone.
Look for apps that use substantial battery when you have not actively used them, as well as resource-intensive apps you use frequently. This gives you a more useful starting point than applying restrictions to every app.

The display can contribute significantly to battery use. Lower brightness to a comfortable level and shorten screen timeout so the screen turns off sooner when you are not using it. Samsung also identifies high-performance apps, high-resolution streaming, and location services as potential sources of increased consumption.

- Brightness: Reduce it when the screen is brighter than you need.
- Screen timeout: Choose a shorter interval that still suits how you use the phone.
- Demanding activity: Be aware that high-resolution streaming and performance-intensive apps can use more power.
- Location: Review which apps use location services and whether they need access continuously.
Use Power saving when its limits are worth it
Power saving can reduce background activity and limit selected features to conserve the current charge. Depending on your device, you may be able to customize which restrictions it applies. Check the options shown on your phone and decide whether their effects are acceptable for the situation—for example, when the battery is low or you need it to last through a period without charging.
Restrictions can affect performance or features. Samsung’s support guidance does not provide a controlled estimate of how many extra hours Power saving, or any individual setting, will add.

Limit background activity without missing important alerts
For apps that do not need to update continuously, use the phone’s background usage limits or sleep controls if available. A sleeping app may not update or send notifications as usual, so avoid restricting apps whose alerts or synchronization need to be timely.

- Keep messaging, work, security, or other time-sensitive apps unrestricted when their alerts must arrive promptly.
- After changing a restriction, check whether the app still updates and notifies you as expected.
Investigate unusual drain that continues
If battery use remains unexpectedly high, check whether the change began after installing or updating an app or software, whether location use has increased, and whether the phone is often in an area with weak network coverage. Samsung notes that actual battery behavior also varies with features, apps, call frequency, charging, and how the phone is used. Keep the phone’s software and apps updated.

Could 5G be responsible?
Samsung says a phone may drain faster while connected to 5G, but that possibility alone does not establish the cause of drain on a particular device. Compare the timing of the battery drop with your network use and coverage, and also review app usage, screen settings, Power saving, and background activity. Avoid assuming that 5G is the sole cause without those checks.

Brightness, timeout, Power saving, and background limits are intended to reduce consumption from the current charge. Samsung’s advice about charging between 20% and 80% and using Battery protection concerns battery lifespan over time, not extra runtime from today’s charge. Samsung UK’s battery optimization guidance, updated 27 November 2025, recommends aiming for that charging range; it is guidance, not a measured promise of additional daily use.

A practical order for making changes
- Open Settings > Battery (or look under Settings > Device care) and note the apps with the highest usage.
- Lower brightness and choose a shorter screen timeout that remains comfortable.
- Enable Power saving when its feature or performance limits suit your needs; review the options available on your phone.
- Put suitable rarely used apps to sleep, then confirm important notifications still arrive.
- If drain remains unusual, consider network coverage and 5G use, location access, and recent app or software changes; install available updates.
These steps are based on Samsung support guidance for multiple regions. Menu labels and feature availability can differ by model, software version, and region, and Samsung does not quantify a specific runtime gain for each change.
