Samsung Maintenance Mode gives a repair handoff a separate, restricted user environment instead of your usual profile. Samsung says personal items such as photos, videos, contacts, and messages are unavailable there, but this is the company’s description of how the feature is designed to work—not an independent security test or a guarantee about every repair scenario. Back up important data before handing over your device: repairs can still involve a reset or component replacement.
What is Samsung Maintenance Mode?
Maintenance Mode is a built-in feature for supported Galaxy phones and tablets. Samsung says it creates a distinct user profile or account for repair work, leaving the owner’s primary account and personal data separate. Samsung UK describes the feature as using Multi-User Mode (MUM) and says only preinstalled apps are accessible while it is active.
Samsung identifies photos, videos, contacts, and messages as examples of personal information concealed or unavailable in the repair environment. Its UK guidance also says some preinstalled apps that might contain customer information can be signed out. App behavior can vary, so do not assume every app or item behaves identically.

Can a repair technician see my photos in Maintenance Mode?
According to Samsung, personal data such as photos and videos is inaccessible in the restricted environment while Maintenance Mode is active. That is the appropriate expectation for the feature, but Samsung’s support instructions are not an independent penetration test and do not establish an absolute guarantee against every possible access path.
Use Maintenance Mode to limit exposure during a handoff, and still treat the repair as a situation where data may be lost or the device may need to be reset. Samsung recommends backing up before repair for that reason.

How to turn on Maintenance Mode before repair
- Check support for your device. Confirm that Maintenance Mode appears on your Galaxy and consult the Samsung support page for your country. Samsung Canada says the feature requires One UI 5 or later, but availability descriptions differ by region and software; do not assume that one regional eligibility statement applies to every model.
- Back up important data. Complete and verify a backup before proceeding. Samsung UK documents temporary Samsung Cloud backup and external-storage backup options. Choose a method you can confirm and restore; Maintenance Mode itself does not make a backup.
- Set a screen lock. A configured lock screen is required to activate the mode.
- Open the setting. On Samsung Canada’s current instructions, go to Settings > Battery and device care > Maintenance mode. Samsung Members is an alternative route on supported devices. Follow the on-screen instructions.
- Activate and hand off the device. The phone restarts into Maintenance Mode. Leave it in that mode for the repair handoff.
- Exit after the repair. Use the device’s exit flow and authenticate with your screen lock to return to your regular profile. The exact labels may vary by software version.
Samsung Canada’s July 28, 2026 instructions list a storage requirement of 1.5 GB free on a device with 64 GB of internal storage, and 500 MB free on devices with more storage. Requirements can change, so check the current local support guidance if activation is unavailable.

Activating Maintenance Mode is intended to separate the repair environment from your personal profile; it is not itself a factory reset. However, that does not mean your data is safe from repair-related loss. Samsung warns that a repair may involve a factory reset or memory/mainboard replacement, which can make stored data unavailable.

Should I back up my Samsung phone before repair?
Yes. Samsung recommends a backup before repair because of the possibility of a reset or component replacement. Its support guidance identifies temporary Samsung Cloud backup and external storage as options. Check that the backup completed and that you know how you would restore it; a backup method is useful only if the data can be recovered.

- Confirm Maintenance Mode is supported and available on your specific device.
- Back up important files and verify the backup before the handoff.
- Set a screen lock, then activate Maintenance Mode and confirm the device has restarted into it.
- After the repair, exit the mode with your screen lock and check your data and device.
