If a sheet of ice has formed over your Samsung ice maker, do not try to defrost it yourself. Samsung US says the ice maker has an automatic defrost function; if it is not working, the ice maker needs service. Do not use a hair dryer, pry at the ice, or force out a stuck bucket. Frost on a removable bucket or elsewhere in the freezer is a different issue, and Samsung gives limited cleaning steps for that buildup.
First identify where the ice or frost is

If the ice maker itself is frozen over
Samsung’s instruction is explicit: “Do not attempt to defrost your ice maker, as this may damage the ice maker. Your ice maker has an automatic defrost function. If this is not working, then your ice maker needs service.” If the mechanism is covered by a sheet of ice, use Samsung’s Support Center to request service rather than trying heat, scraping, or prying.
A hair dryer is not a safe workaround. Samsung warns against using one and says manual defrosting can damage the ice maker. Avoid applying heat or force to the mechanism.
If the ice bucket is stuck
Most Samsung ice buckets pull straight out, while some models require a slight lift first. Follow the removal instructions for your specific refrigerator. If the bucket does not come out easily, Samsung says it is likely frozen; do not yank it or use a hair dryer. Contact service if it remains stuck.

If frost is on the bucket or elsewhere in the freezer
Samsung’s frost guidance allows different approaches depending on severity. These steps apply to frost on the bucket or in the freezer—not a sheet of ice covering the ice-maker mechanism.
- Light frost: Wipe it away with a damp cloth, then dry the area.
- Medium frost: Gently remove it with a plastic scraper, wipe the area, and dry it.
- Heavy frost or buildup too hard to remove by hand: Samsung says the freezer needs defrosting.
Do not use a hair dryer; Samsung warns it can damage the refrigerator.

Check why frost may be returning
Warm air entering the ice-maker compartment can contribute to frost. Samsung recommends checking that the left-side door is aligned and its gasket sits flush against the ice bucket and ice chute. Also check that the dispenser flap closes flush and airtight, with no ice or debris holding it open. If frost returns after clearing the buildup and checking these points, request service.

Reset only the compatible freezer-door ice maker
Samsung’s reset instructions apply to an ice maker located at the back of a freezer door. They are not universal steps for every Samsung refrigerator; consult your manual if your model has a different configuration. For the freezer-door type, Samsung’s procedure is:

- Remove the ice bucket.
- Press and hold the ice maker’s Test button until you hear a chime.
- If there is no chime and the ice maker does not move, turn the refrigerator off or unplug it for two minutes. Restore power and try the Test button again.
- Reinstall the bucket, pushing it in until it clicks.
Do not keep pressing Test after the tray has filled with ice or water. Samsung cautions that doing so can cause water to overflow or ice to jam. See Samsung’s freezer-door ice maker reset guide for the model-specific instructions.

- The ice-maker mechanism is covered by a sheet of ice.
- The bucket remains stuck and cannot be removed easily using the model’s instructions.
- Frost returns after you clear it and check the door gasket, alignment, and dispenser flap.
- The automatic defrost function appears not to be working.
Samsung says a firmware update may help prevent and possibly resolve the issue on Family Hub and other SmartThings-capable refrigerators. This is a possible aid, not a guaranteed fix; keep a supported refrigerator connected to receive updates. If the ice maker remains frozen over, request service rather than attempting a manual thaw.
