The Galaxy Z Fold6 is lighter and thinner than the Z Fold5, with a slightly larger cover screen, a newer processor, an IP48 rating, and an optional 1TB storage tier. The main display size, listed camera hardware, battery capacity, memory, S Pen support, and DeX support remain unchanged in Samsung’s comparison. In the US, Samsung’s October 2024 list prices put the Fold6 $100 above the Fold5 at both matching storage tiers—but those are historical prices, not today’s market prices.

What the differences mean in daily use

Fold6 is easier to carry on paper

At 239g and 12.1mm thick when folded, the Fold6 has a measurable size and weight advantage over the 253g, 13.4mm Fold5. It is also wider by 1.0mm when folded, so the specification change is not a simple reduction in every dimension. The dimensions are manufacturer measurements, not a comfort test.

The outer screen changes slightly; the inner screen does not get larger

The Fold6’s cover screen grows from 6.2 to 6.3 inches, with a change in resolution and a 1–120Hz listed refresh-rate range rather than the Fold5’s 48–120Hz. Samsung notes that viewable screen area is smaller than the nominal measurement because of corners and the camera opening. Both inner displays are listed at 7.6 inches and 374 ppi, though their resolutions differ.

Samsung Galaxy Z Fold7, 512GB, Jet Black - Unlocked (Renewed)
  • A premium foldable smartphone featuring an 8.0" Dynamic AMOLED 2X main display, 6.5" cover display, 200MP main camera, Snapdragon 8 Elite for Galaxy processor, up to 16GB RAM and 1TB storage, 4,400mAh battery, and a slim 215g design.

The processor is newer, but the comparison does not measure speed

The Fold6 uses Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 for Galaxy, replacing the Fold5’s Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 for Galaxy. That establishes a newer processor generation, not a specific performance, heat, or battery-life gain; Samsung’s specification table does not provide a comparative benchmark.

Camera hardware and battery capacity are unchanged in the table

Samsung lists the same rear and front camera resolutions and configurations for both phones, as well as a 4,400mAh typical battery. Those matching figures do not establish identical camera output or real-world endurance: image processing, usage, software, network conditions, and battery age can affect results.

IP48 is a limited dust rating, not permission to use the phone anywhere

The Fold5 is listed as IPX8, while the Fold6 is IP48. Samsung says the Fold6 rating reflects freshwater laboratory submersion up to 1.5m for up to 30 minutes, and its guidance says, “Not advised for beach or pool use.” Resistance may diminish with wear. Do not interpret IP48 as dustproof or as protection against sand, pool water, or seawater. [Samsung Newsroom Canada: Fold6 launch and IP guidance]

Which Galaxy Z Fold should you choose?

Choose the Fold6 if its specific refinements matter to you

  • You want the lighter, thinner model and prefer its slightly larger cover screen.
  • You value the newer processor generation, while recognizing the cited specifications do not quantify real-world performance gains.
  • You need the 1TB storage option; Samsung’s comparison lists that tier for Fold6, not Fold5.
  • You consider the Fold6’s IP48 rating a useful added dust-resistance measure, with the limitations Samsung states.

Consider the Fold5 if the current offer makes it better value

The Fold5 retains the same listed main-screen diagonal, camera hardware, typical battery capacity, memory, S Pen support, and DeX support. If those are your priorities, the Fold6’s spec-sheet changes may not justify a higher price. Compare live prices and the condition and warranty of the particular phone rather than relying on the October 2024 MSRP difference.

If you already own a Fold5

Samsung’s comparison supports describing the Fold6 as a refinement, not a major change to the camera hardware, battery capacity, or main-screen size. The case for switching rests mainly on the reduced weight and thickness, cover-screen adjustments, newer processor, 1TB option, and IP48 rating; whether those are worth the cost depends on your needs and the upgrade price available to you.

Check before buying

  • Confirm whether the listing is for a Fold5 or Fold6 and check its exact storage tier.
  • Verify the local model’s configuration and compatibility for your market; Samsung notes that regional variants can differ.
  • For a pre-owned or refurbished device, check condition, warranty, and seller terms as well as price.
  • Do not assume a matching camera specification or battery capacity guarantees matching photos or runtime.
