Choose the tracker that fits the phone you use and the features you need. Apple AirTag (2nd generation) is the natural choice for iPhone owners who want Apple’s Precision Finding. Samsung Galaxy SmartTag3 is the option to consider if you use a Galaxy phone—especially if you want its Galaxy-only directional and alert features. SmartTag3’s launch is staged, so check whether it is actually available where you live before choosing it.
What’s different between SmartTag3 and AirTag?
This is a comparison of Apple AirTag (2nd generation), introduced in 2026, and Samsung Galaxy SmartTag3, announced on September 30, 2026. It is not a comparison with the older Galaxy SmartTag2, whose specifications differ.
| Feature | Samsung Galaxy SmartTag3 | Apple AirTag (2nd generation) |
|---|---|---|
| Phone and account requirements | Samsung says core finding and sharing work across Galaxy and iOS. Some features require a Galaxy device. | Apple Account; iPhone with iOS 26.2.1 or later, or iPad with iPadOS 26.1 or later. |
| Nearby directional finding | Bluetooth 6.0 Channel Sounding Compass View and UWB on supported devices. Samsung claims up to 60 meters for Compass View under line-of-sight conditions on a limited set of Galaxy phones. | Bluetooth and second-generation UWB with expanded Precision Finding. Compatible hardware and regional availability apply. |
| Finding when out of Bluetooth range | Galaxy Find Network, which uses participating Galaxy devices as network nodes. Samsung announced more than 900 million participating devices worldwide; location timing depends on nearby devices, settings, network conditions, and region. | Apple Find My network. A comparable network-size figure or matched success-rate measurement is not stated in Apple’s cited specifications. |
| Battery | Samsung claims up to 550 days in standard use or up to 790 days in Power Saving Mode, based on internal lab simulations with the included CR2032. Power Saving Mode restricts some features. | User-replaceable CR2032. Battery-life duration is not stated in Apple’s cited technical specifications. |
| Water and dust resistance | IP67: up to 1 meter for 30 minutes under laboratory conditions, according to Samsung. | IP67 under IEC 60529: up to 1 meter for 30 minutes, according to Apple. |
| Launch timing | Samsung says Korea from October 7, 2026, followed by the U.S.; additional markets are expected in 2027. Local price is not stated in Samsung’s announcement. | Apple’s official specifications cover the second-generation model introduced in 2026. |
The directional-finding distances and battery durations above are manufacturer claims, not results from a controlled head-to-head test. Samsung’s 900-million figure is its own announced network count, not an independently audited comparison with Apple’s network.

Choose AirTag if you use an iPhone
AirTag is designed around an Apple Account and Apple’s Find My ecosystem. If you have a compatible iPhone, its second-generation UWB and Precision Finding are the clearest fit when you want guided directions as you get close to a misplaced item. Apple says improved Precision Finding works with AirTag (2nd generation) paired with iPhone Air or iPhone 15 or later, excluding iPhone 16e; availability varies by region. Apple Watch Precision Finding requires Series 9 or later or Ultra 2 or later running watchOS 26.2.1.

Choose SmartTag3 if you use a Galaxy phone and want its Galaxy-only tools
Samsung says SmartTag3 supports core finding and sharing across Galaxy and iOS, but Compass View, Ring Phone, and Left Behind Alert are not available on iOS. If those features matter, owning a Galaxy device is more important than the tag’s cross-platform core support. Samsung’s announcement also describes SmartThings Find location sharing and Search Nearby on supported devices.
For other Android phones, check the exact support before buying
The SmartTag3 announcement describes core support across Galaxy and iOS, not a blanket promise of full functionality on every Android phone. The Galaxy-only feature restrictions are explicit; compatibility and availability can also vary by device and region. AirTag’s stated setup requirements are an Apple Account and a compatible iPhone or iPad, so it is not the straightforward choice for someone who relies on Android to manage their tracker.
Which phones support Precision Finding?
For AirTag (2nd generation), Apple specifies iPhone Air and iPhone 15 or later, with iPhone 16e excluded, for improved Precision Finding. Apple says availability varies by region. An Apple Watch can use Precision Finding with Series 9 or later or Ultra 2 or later on watchOS 26.2.1.

For SmartTag3, Samsung says Bluetooth Channel Sounding Compass View is currently limited to Galaxy Z Fold8 Ultra, Galaxy Z Fold8, Galaxy S26 Ultra, and Galaxy S26 Plus. The company also describes UWB-based closer-range precision on compatible devices. These are distinct capabilities; do not assume that every Galaxy phone supports Channel Sounding just because it supports basic tag finding.
How far away can you find a SmartTag?
Samsung claims Compass View can provide distance and directional guidance at up to 60 meters in line-of-sight conditions on supported Galaxy devices. That is not a guaranteed everyday radius: Samsung notes that walls, nearby electronics, obstructions, the phone, and region can affect range and accuracy. UWB is intended for closer-range precision on compatible devices.
Apple describes expanded Precision Finding connectivity for the second-generation AirTag but does not give a directly comparable maximum distance in the cited specifications. There is no matched test here that establishes one tracker as more accurate or useful at a given distance. Treat any range number as conditional on the feature, phone, and environment.

Can either tracker find luggage when it is out of Bluetooth range?
Yes, potentially, through each company’s finding network rather than a direct Bluetooth connection to your phone. Samsung says participating Galaxy devices can act as Galaxy Find Network nodes; the tag’s location update depends on another participating device coming within range, along with settings, network conditions, and region. A location may therefore be delayed or unavailable.

The official specifications cited here do not provide a like-for-like network-size comparison or independent success-rate data, so there is no evidence-based basis in these sources to say which network finds a lost bag more often or faster.
For luggage, network finding is not live GPS tracking. A tracker can help report a location when it is detected by the relevant network, but do not rely on it as a guaranteed real-time feed or as a substitute for an airline’s baggage process.

No need to replace batteries like single-use wallet trackers, easily check the battery level through the app. (TIP: The red light will stay on and turn off after fully charged. It features a built-in buzzer that plays a loud sound for easy close-range locating. Additionally, the phone will promptly notify you if you leave the tagged item behind. (Alert distance adjusted based on the environment.)
How long does the battery last, and can you replace it?
Both products use a replaceable CR2032 coin cell. Samsung’s SmartTag3 figures—up to 550 days in standard use and up to 790 days in Power Saving Mode—come from Samsung internal lab simulations using the included battery; real-world life varies. Power Saving Mode leaves basic Bluetooth LE finding but can make Compass View and sound or ringtone settings inaccessible. Apple confirms the replaceable battery but does not state a directly comparable duration in the cited technical specifications.
SmartTag2 figures sometimes seen in listings—up to 500 days in Normal Mode and 700 days in Power Saving Mode—refer to Samsung’s 2023 model, not SmartTag3. Do not use them as SmartTag3 battery estimates.
Are AirTag and SmartTag waterproof?
Both are IP67-rated, which the manufacturers describe as up to 1 meter of water for 30 minutes in laboratory conditions. That rating does not mean either tracker is permanently waterproof. Apple says resistance can decrease with normal wear; Samsung also warns resistance may diminish over time, advises rinsing residue and drying the tag after it gets wet, and says not to use it at a beach or pool.

When will Galaxy SmartTag3 be available?
As of October 4, 2026, Samsung says SmartTag3 is scheduled to launch first in Korea on October 7, followed by the U.S., with additional markets to follow in 2027. The announcement does not state local retail prices. Check Samsung’s availability and price in your market before treating SmartTag3 as an immediate alternative to AirTag.
Samsung says SmartTag3 is approximately 35% smaller by volume and 33% lighter than the prior generation. That comparison is with SmartTag2, not AirTag. SmartTag2 owners should also check that any case or holder listing explicitly fits their model; accessory compatibility should not be assumed across generations.
