The Galaxy S22 Ultra and Galaxy Note20 Ultra S Pens can both write on their intended phones, and both phones support Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE) Air Actions with their own pens. They are not fully interchangeable: Samsung says a Note-series pen used on the S22 Ultra supports writing only, not the S22 Ultra pen’s remote Air Actions. For a replacement, match the pen model to the phone: EJ-PS908B for the S22 Ultra and EJ-PN980B for the Note20 Ultra.

Writing, latency, and software features
Both pens support handwriting, drawing, and screen interaction on their respective phones. Samsung describes the Note20 generation as improving display latency over the prior generation, but its cited Note20 support material gives no numeric latency. Samsung’s 2022 interim report gives a 2.8 ms optimized S Pen latency figure for the S22 Ultra. Because the cited sources do not provide a matched Note20 Ultra number, that figure should not be treated as a quantified head-to-head improvement.
Samsung also describes handwriting-to-text and text extraction from a selected screen area as part of the S22 Ultra experience. The cited materials do not establish that these software capabilities come from the pen hardware alone.

Air Actions and remote control
Note20 Ultra S Pen
On the Note20 series, the pen connects over Bluetooth Low Energy for remote Air Actions. Samsung lists functions such as launching the camera with a press-and-hold, taking a photo with the button, adjusting media volume with gestures, and navigation actions including Back, Recents, Home, Smart Select, and Capture and Screen write. Samsung says the Note20 series added five gestures that worked beyond particular apps. See Samsung’s Note20 Air Actions guide.
S22 Ultra S Pen
Samsung describes camera and media controls, button presses, directional actions, zoom, and actions such as Back, Home, Recents, Smart Select, and Capture and Write for the S22 Ultra. Some actions depend on supported apps and settings, so individual commands may not be available everywhere. Samsung’s S22 Ultra S Pen guide lists the supported functions and compatibility details.

Can you use a Note20 Ultra S Pen on a Galaxy S22 Ultra?
Yes, for writing. Samsung’s S22 Ultra compatibility guidance says: “Note built-in S Pen/Tab built-in S Pen: Writing only.” That means a Note20 pen can be used to write on the S22 Ultra, but Samsung does not support its remote Air Actions there. Likewise, Samsung describes the S22 Ultra pen’s Air Actions as tied to its designated phone, even though the pen can write on other devices with compatible Wacom panels.
Charging, battery, and water resistance
The S22 Ultra S Pen charges when inserted into the phone. Samsung Canada Support states a full charge takes seven minutes, with up to 20 minutes of continuous Air Action use and up to 24 hours of standby; Samsung notes that battery times can vary. The Note20 pen charges in its phone’s slot and needs to be charged for remote Air Actions, while other S Pen features can remain usable when it is discharged. Samsung’s cited Note20 page does not give equivalent numeric charging or runtime figures.

Samsung’s S22 Ultra support article identifies that pen as IP68-supported and advises removing water before use. The cited Note20 support page warns about water entering the S Pen slot but does not provide a comparable pen-level IP rating. These sources therefore do not establish a direct water-resistance rating comparison between the pens.

Use the model code for your exact phone rather than assuming Samsung S Pens are interchangeable. Samsung’s comparison document identifies EJ-PS908B for the S22 Ultra and EJ-PN980B for the Note20 Ultra. Verify the model printed in the seller’s listing, regional compatibility, stock, and price before ordering; the document’s MSRP figures are historical, not live pricing.
