There is no automatic used-buy winner: compare the actual phones’ condition, warranty, return terms and total price. At a similar condition-adjusted cost, choose the Galaxy S22 for its smaller, lighter body and 50MP main camera; choose the Galaxy S21 FE for its larger screen and higher rated battery capacity.
At a glance: what differs most?

These are manufacturer specifications, not independent performance, camera or battery-life test results. The S21 FE figures come from a US T-Mobile specification sheet and the S22 figures from a US specification sheet, so confirm the exact regional model and configuration on any listing. Samsung’s S21 FE specifications and Samsung’s S22 specifications describe those cited US variants.
Which phone makes more sense for you?
Choose the Galaxy S22 for a smaller phone
The S22 is 6.1 inches and 168.8g in Samsung’s cited US specifications, compared with the S21 FE’s 6.4 inches and 177g. That makes the S22 the more compact, lighter option on paper. Its listed rear wide camera is 50MP, compared with 12MP for the S21 FE’s wide camera. Resolution alone does not establish which phone takes better photos, so treat this as a hardware distinction rather than a guaranteed image-quality advantage.

The FE’s 6.4-inch display offers more viewing area than the S22’s 6.1-inch screen. It is the more natural fit if you prefer a larger display for reading or video and do not mind a larger, heavier handset.
#1 Best Overall
- The S22 uses a flat (non‑curved) 6.1-inch Dynamic AMOLED 2X display with adaptive 120 Hz refresh that dynamically adjusts between 48 – 120 Hz depending on content — which means smoother scrolling and better battery efficiency when high refresh isn’t needed.
- Its main rear camera features a 50 MP sensor with what Samsung calls “Tetra‑binning,” delivering stronger detail in bright light and surprisingly good low‑light photos compared to many older flagships.
- The build quality is designed to feel premium and durable: it uses an Armor Aluminum frame combined with Corning Gorilla Glass Victus+ on front and back, which gives better scratch and drop resistance — nice if you want a relatively compact but rugged flagship.
- For video content and editing, the S22 supports 8K recording — rare for a “smaller” flagship. That means you can shoot very high-resolution video, useful if you care about future‑proofing footage or cropping/editing later.
- The phone strikes a balance of compactness and performance — in a world of increasingly large phones, the S22 remains fairly pocket‑friendly while still packing the 4 nm flagship‑class chipset (Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 or Exynos 2200 depending on region) for smooth daily performance.
Factor in battery capacity, but inspect battery health
Samsung lists a typical 4,500mAh capacity for the S21 FE and 3,700mAh for the S22. Capacity is not a runtime comparison, and it cannot tell you how much capacity remains in a particular used phone. Ask about battery condition or any available health disclosure; do not assume the FE will last longer simply because its original rated capacity is higher.
Compare camera hardware, not megapixels alone
The S22 has a 50MP wide camera and 10MP telephoto camera; the FE has a 12MP wide camera and 8MP telephoto camera. Both list a 12MP ultra-wide camera, while their front cameras are 10MP on the S22 and 32MP on the FE. Those numbers describe resolution, not overall photo quality. The cited specifications do not establish a head-to-head camera winner.

How much software support remains?
Samsung’s February 9, 2022 announcement named both the Galaxy S22 series and Galaxy S21 FE among devices eligible for up to four generations of One UI and Android OS upgrades and up to five years of security updates. Samsung also said upgrade availability and timing could vary by device and Android release timing. The shared policy does not establish either model’s current update cadence or how much support remains for a specific regional or carrier version. Check Samsung’s current update information for the exact model, country and carrier before buying. Samsung’s 2022 software-support announcement records the original commitment.

Check the regional model before comparing listings
Processor and network compatibility can vary by region and operator. The cited US S21 FE T-Mobile sheet identifies Qualcomm SDM8350, while Samsung Ireland’s comparison describes Snapdragon 888 or Exynos 2100 variants and flags regional or operator variation. The cited US S22 sheet identifies Snapdragon 8 Gen 1. These references should not be generalized to every country or listing. Check the phone’s exact model number and confirm that it supports your carrier’s network bands before purchasing. Samsung Ireland’s regional S21 FE comparison explains the variation it covers.

Use a listing-by-listing checklist
Two phones with the same model name can be very different purchases. Before choosing between them, check:
- Model and network: Verify the exact model number, regional version, carrier lock status and compatibility with your carrier.
- Configuration: Confirm storage and RAM rather than relying on a listing title; the cited US S21 FE sheet is carrier-specific.
- Physical and functional condition: Ask about screen damage, camera operation, charging-port function and fingerprint-reader operation.
- Battery and repairs: Look for a battery-health disclosure and any repair history the seller can provide. Original IP68 ratings do not prove that a used phone’s seals remain intact.
- Purchase protection: Compare seller warranty, return window, included accessories and total delivered cost.
- Like-for-like value: Compare phones with similar storage, cosmetic grade, warranty and return terms. A lower asking price may not be the better deal if condition or buyer protection is worse.
Make the final choice
At comparable total cost and condition, the S22 is the better fit if compact size and its higher-resolution main-camera hardware matter most. The S21 FE is the better fit if you want the larger display and prefer its higher rated battery capacity, provided the particular phone is in good condition. If the listings differ substantially in battery condition, warranty, return rights or regional compatibility, weigh those details before treating the model specifications as decisive.
