If your Samsung Galaxy slows down after hours of use, the timing is a clue—not a diagnosis. Heat can temporarily limit performance, while background apps, low available memory, outdated software, or a temporary system issue can also contribute. Check whether the phone is hot when it slows, then work through the reversible checks below.
First, check whether heat is involved
When the slowdown starts, note whether the phone feels noticeably warm or shows a “Device cooling down” alert. Samsung says that during a cooling alert, “Overall performance may be limited.” The phone can also make protective changes, and normal operation returns after it cools sufficiently. Heat may build during demanding app use, multitasking, charging, long video recording, navigation, or hotspot use. A weak signal, direct sunlight, or an enclosed space can add to the conditions that raise device temperature, according to Samsung’s UK guidance on phone heat.
If the phone is hot
- Pause use and unplug the phone if it is charging.
- Close running apps and remove the case or cover if one is fitted.
- Move it out of direct sun or an enclosed space, and let it cool naturally. If a cooling alert appears, do not use the phone until it has cooled sufficiently.
These are Samsung’s recommended cooling steps; avoid trying to cool the phone abruptly.

If heat does not explain the slowdown, check software and background activity
Samsung’s Galaxy slowdown troubleshooting guide lists outdated software, apps running in the background, insufficient available memory, and temporary system errors as possible contributors. The fact that a slowdown appears after several hours does not identify which one applies.
Install available software updates
Check the software-update option in Settings and install any update offered for your model. The precise menu wording can vary by Galaxy model and software version; follow the update route shown on your phone rather than assuming every device has identical labels.

Review apps and memory
Close apps you are no longer using. Where available, open Settings > Device care > Memory and use Clean now. Device Care labels and options vary across models and software versions. Check storage status there as well if the phone offers it; this is a check, not proof that storage is the cause.
Restart the phone
Restarting can refresh the system when background processes or a temporary software issue is affecting performance. If the phone becomes slow again, note how long it took and what you were doing when the change began; that information can help distinguish a recurring heat pattern from other causes.

Run Samsung diagnostics before considering service
Use Samsung Members > Support > Phone diagnostics to check available device tests, including battery status. Menu names can differ by app version, device, and region. Samsung also offers diagnostics through Device Care on supported devices; its guidance says those diagnostics are available on Galaxy devices running Android 12 or later. If the slowdown continues after cooling, updating, closing background apps, and restarting—or a diagnostic flags a problem—contact Samsung or an authorized service provider for an assessment specific to your model. A slowdown by itself does not establish that the battery needs replacement or that the phone requires repair.

Menu paths and feature availability can vary by model, software and app version, and region. Samsung’s cited guidance includes US, UK, and Canada support pages, so a label or path shown in one region may not match another exactly.
