To keep useful alerts while quieting specific unwanted ones on a Samsung Galaxy, turn on Manage notification categories for each app. Then open the app’s notification settings and adjust the categories it offers. This lets you change notification types individually rather than turning off every notification from an app.
Turn on per-app notification categories
- Open Settings and tap Notifications.
- Tap Advanced settings.
- Turn on Manage notification categories for each app.
Samsung documents this route in its Galaxy notification instructions. If the label is missing, search Settings for “notification categories” or “Manage notification categories for each app.” Menu names and available features can vary by device and software version.
Choose which types of an app can interrupt you
- Go back to Settings > Notifications.
- Tap App notifications, then select an app.
- Tap Notification categories.
- Keep the categories you want enabled, and silence or disable the ones you do not need.
For example, if an app offers separate categories for direct messages and promotions, you might keep message alerts on and silence promotions. Category names and controls depend on what the app provides; these examples are not available in every app.

Know what the category controls can—and cannot—do
Categories let you manage the notification types exposed by an app; they do not restore alerts that never arrived. Samsung cautions: “The options will vary depending on the app. Some apps will not have a Notification categories section.” If there is no category section, the app may not offer this level of control through Galaxy settings.

Where a category offers the relevant controls, you may be able to leave Allow notifications on, choose Alert, and select a sound. Some apps do not allow custom notification sounds or manage sound choices inside the app instead. See Samsung’s notification guidance for the controls it describes.
Distinguish notification categories from pop-up style
Notification categories control which types of an app’s alerts are allowed and how available categories behave. Pop-up style controls how a notification appears on screen. Samsung’s One UI 8 guidance, dated July 10, 2025, gives this route for pop-up style: Settings > Notifications > App notifications > choose an app > Notification pop-up style, then choose brief or detailed. That is a separate setting, not a replacement for category management. See Samsung’s One UI 8 notification instructions.

Check version and device differences
Samsung’s One UI 7 support guide covers Galaxy S, Z, and A devices and notes that features can vary by device, carrier, and network. One UI 8 also changes some notification-setting routes. Samsung announced its US One UI 8 rollout on September 15, 2025, beginning with Galaxy S25 and extending to selected devices, with more models to follow. That announcement is not a definitive compatibility list for every device or market; rollout timing and eligibility can differ. Review alerts you dismissed by mistake
Notification history is separate from category management. To enable it, open Settings > Notifications > Advanced settings > Notification history. Samsung says it saves recently dismissed notifications for later review. Android’s notification history may also include snoozed notifications and a history of the day’s alerts, but availability and settings vary by device, and history does not recover alerts from before it was enabled.
