Both Samsung Calendar and Google Calendar may show Hijri dates on Android, but Samsung’s support documentation names Hijri directly, while Google’s official instructions describe alternate calendars without listing Hijri by name. On a Galaxy phone, Samsung Calendar’s documented route is Calendar → ⋮ → Settings → Calendar settings, then choose Hijri under the calendar type or display options. In Google Calendar, open Menu → Settings → General → Alternate calendars and check whether Hijri is available in your app.
Which app has clearer Hijri support?
Samsung Gulf’s support article explicitly lists Hijri as an alternate calendar in Galaxy Calendar. Google documents an Alternate calendars setting for Android, but its help page’s visible examples do not identify Hijri specifically. A Google Calendar Help Community Product Expert response does say to choose Hijri in that setting, but community guidance is less authoritative than an official Google article naming the calendar.
That makes Samsung the more clearly documented option for this particular feature—not proof that its dates are more accurate, or that they will match Google’s. The available sources do not establish a shared Hijri calculation convention or universal agreement between the apps.

How to show Hijri dates in Samsung Calendar
- Open the Calendar app on your Galaxy phone.
- Tap the three-dot menu, then tap Settings.
- Open Calendar settings.
- Look for Calendar type or Display options, then select Hijri.
These steps come from Samsung Gulf’s article, “How to Add an Alternate Calendar on a Galaxy Phone,” last updated June 24, 2026: Samsung Gulf support. The same article lists Korean lunar, Chinese lunar, Vietnamese lunar, and Shamsi as other alternate-calendar choices.

Samsung cautions that menu names and screen layouts can vary with the model, software version, and app version. Its separate guidance on syncing Google Calendar with a Galaxy device makes the same qualification: Samsung Canada support. If the labels above do not appear, check the Calendar settings available on your device rather than assuming the feature is absent.
How to check for Hijri in Google Calendar
- Open the Google Calendar app.
- Tap Menu, then Settings.
- Tap General, then Alternate calendars.
- Look for Hijri and select it if it appears.
Google’s official Android instructions document this path and explain that alternate calendars include lunar and solar types, but the examples shown there do not name Hijri: Google Calendar Help: Add or remove alternate calendars. A Google Calendar Help Community Product Expert response dated June 2, 2026, specifically advises selecting Hijri from Alternate calendars: Google Calendar Help Community. Since that is community guidance, check the current options in your own app instead of assuming Hijri appears in every version, region, or account.

Where will the alternate date appear?
The Samsung instructions describe showing an alternate calendar in the Calendar app. Google community guidance dated June 25, 2025, says Hijri dates can be viewed inside Google Calendar but not directly on Android home or lock screens: Google Calendar Help Community. That answer is dated and secondary, so it should not be treated as a universal rule for every phone.
Home-screen widgets and lock-screen displays depend on the phone manufacturer, Android version, app widget, and settings. Check the widget and lock-screen options on your device if you need the Hijri date outside the calendar app; do not assume that enabling an alternate calendar also adds it to those surfaces.

Which one should you use?
- Choose Samsung Calendar if you want the clearest documented setup path on a Galaxy phone. Samsung’s regional support page names Hijri directly.
- Try Google Calendar if you already use it. Its Android app has an Alternate calendars setting, and a Google community Product Expert says Hijri can be selected there; confirm that Hijri appears in your current app.
- For religious observance, verify important dates locally. The cited product guidance does not compare calculation methods or establish that the two apps—or any app and a local authority—will always show the same date.
