There is no verified single bootloop defect affecting every Samsung phone. Samsung has acknowledged a SmartThings-related repeated-restart problem involving selected older Galaxy models, while its general support guidance lists several other causes, including bad apps, failed updates, storage problems and hardware faults. The safest approach is to identify your symptom, try non-destructive recovery first, and delay any reset until you understand the data-loss risk.

What a Samsung boot loop looks like

A boot loop is a device that starts, shows the Samsung or Galaxy logo, and restarts before reaching the lock screen or home screen. It is different from a single slow restart after an update, a phone that is frozen while still powered on, or a completely dead device with no charging or logo response.

  • Repeated restarting: the logo appears, disappears and returns in a cycle.
  • Stuck at the logo: the Samsung logo remains on screen without an obvious restart. Use Samsung’s separate stuck-at-logo guide.
  • Reaches the lock screen, then crashes: the cause may be an app, storage pressure, overheating or a battery problem.
  • Completely dead: no logo, charging indication or vibration suggests a power or hardware issue rather than a typical boot loop.

Is Samsung facing a widespread bootloop problem?

The confirmed incident is narrower than the headline suggests. A Samsung regional support entry says a SmartThings app update caused continuous restarting on selected older devices. It does not establish a current, worldwide defect affecting all Galaxy phones, every model family or every software build. Reports from owners of other models can show similar symptoms, but anecdotal posts do not prove a common cause or prevalence.

Samsung’s general repeated-restart guidance treats boot loops as a symptom with multiple possible causes. The SmartThings acknowledgement is regional support material, not a clearly dated global incident bulletin, so eligibility and current status must be checked with Samsung in your country.

Models listed in Samsung’s SmartThings support entry

Samsung lists these model families as associated with the SmartThings-related problem:

Galaxy family Qualification
Galaxy S10 series Family listed by Samsung; individual regional variants and builds are not specified.
Galaxy Note10 series Family listed by Samsung; do not assume every unit is affected.
Original Galaxy Fold First-generation Fold only, according to the support entry.
Galaxy Tab S6 Tablet family listed by Samsung.
Galaxy A02, A21, A31, A41, A42 and A90 Selected A-series models listed by Samsung.

The same entry says affected devices may be unable to back up before service. Samsung describes a one-time warranty allowance in that regional material, but coverage is not automatically valid in the United States or any other region; confirm the current terms before sending a device for repair.

Try these fixes in order

1. Stop and inspect before forcing more restarts

  • Disconnect accessories and remove the case if it could press a button.
  • Check for swelling, unusual heat, liquid damage or a stuck power/volume key.
  • If the phone is hot, swollen or smells unusual, stop charging it and seek service.
  • Otherwise connect it to a reliable wall charger. Samsung advises having adequate charge before software operations; its troubleshooting instructions specify at least 50% before installing an update.

2. Perform a model-specific force restart

Button combinations differ by Galaxy generation, physical-button layout and software version. Follow the sequence for your exact model in Samsung’s repeated-restart instructions rather than applying one universal shortcut. A force restart normally does not erase personal data, but it may not correct corrupted software, a failed update or hardware failure.

3. Test Safe mode

Safe mode starts the original system software while disabling downloaded apps. Samsung says that a problem which disappears in Safe mode is likely related to a downloaded app. Entry steps vary by model, so use Samsung’s current instructions.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

If Safe mode is stable:

  1. Back up immediately while the phone is usable.
  2. Uninstall apps installed or updated just before the loop began, prioritizing recent Galaxy Store and Google Play changes.
  3. Restart normally and test.
  4. If the loop returns, remove the next most recent suspect app.

Safe mode is diagnostic, not a universal repair. It cannot fix damaged system files, failed firmware installation, failing storage or a board fault.

4. Update software when the phone stays usable

If the device reaches the lock screen, back up first, then install pending system and app updates. An update correlation is useful evidence but does not prove the update caused the failure; Samsung also identifies downloaded apps and other software problems as causes.

5. Try Smart Switch from a computer

Samsung directs users to Smart Switch as an official route for checking and installing available software updates. Install it from Samsung’s support channels, use a reliable USB cable and keep the phone connected throughout the operation. If the device becomes stable enough to be recognized, back up before attempting recovery.

Samsung’s hosted repair documentation describes an emergency recovery/reset process that can include a factory data reset. Smart Switch may update or recover some phones, but it is not guaranteed to rescue every boot loop.

6. Use recovery-mode maintenance only with model-specific instructions

Recovery mode provides system-level maintenance and reset options; download mode is intended for firmware installation; Safe mode is a diagnostic startup. Menu labels and entry requirements vary. Some newer Galaxy devices require a USB connection to a computer to enter recovery. Clearing a cache partition may help after a failed update and is generally intended not to remove personal files, but the option may be absent or behave differently across models and One UI versions. It will not repair defective storage or hardware.

Before any reset: understand the data risk

A factory reset erases local data. Photos, messages, authenticator data, app files and documents that were not backed up are not preserved. Samsung also warns that account credentials may be required after the reset, and Google’s Android guidance describes the same loss and verification risks.

If the phone can remain on:

  • Back up photos and videos to Google Photos, OneDrive, Samsung Cloud where supported, or a computer.
  • Use Smart Switch to create a computer or supported external-storage backup.
  • Export authenticator codes and recovery keys.
  • Confirm Samsung and Google account passwords before resetting.
  • If an encrypted SD card is present, decrypt it as Samsung recommends before the reset.

If the phone never reaches the lock screen, ordinary backup may be impossible because Android encryption generally requires the user’s credentials and a functioning system. Samsung specifically warns that some affected rebooting devices cannot be backed up before service.

When a factory reset is appropriate

Use a factory reset only after Safe mode, Smart Switch and other model-specific recovery options have failed, or when Samsung support recommends it. Keep the phone connected to wall power; Samsung says the process may take up to an hour. A reset can remove a software fault, but reinstalling the same problematic app or update can reproduce the loop.

What to do if SmartThings triggered the loop

If restarting began immediately after a SmartThings update, compare your model with Samsung’s listed families. Try Safe mode; if the phone becomes usable, update or remove the relevant app and back up at once. If it remains in the loop, contact Samsung or an authorized service center and ask specifically whether the SmartThings-related repair allowance applies in your region. Samsung says technicians may attempt to preserve data, but some repairs require a complete factory reset.

Use the symptom to choose the next branch

Observed behavior Most useful next step
Phone eventually reaches the home screen Back up, update apps and system software, and investigate recent app changes, storage pressure and heat.
Phone is stable in Safe mode Back up, remove recent downloaded apps one at a time, then restart normally.
Phone loops even in Safe mode Consider a failed system update, corrupted files, storage, battery or board failure; try Smart Switch or seek service.
Phone stays on the Samsung logo Follow Samsung’s stuck-at-logo procedure, not assumptions about the SmartThings incident.
Recovery mode cannot be reached Verify the exact model procedure, including any required USB connection; then escalate to service.
Factory reset does not help Hardware, storage, power-management or incomplete firmware failure becomes more likely.

When to stop troubleshooting and seek repair

  • The phone is swollen, abnormally hot, physically damaged or liquid-exposed.
  • It fails in Safe mode and after an official software recovery attempt.
  • It cannot stay powered in recovery or is not detected by a computer.
  • Your priority is irreplaceable data and you have not yet tried authorized data-preservation assistance.

Use Samsung’s support and service entry point or an authorized provider. Ask about regional warranty allowances and current terms; do not assume Samsung Care+ covers a software boot loop, because eligibility depends on country, plan, device and failure type. Avoid FRP-bypass utilities and unofficial unlocking services.

Bottom line

Some older Galaxy devices have a documented SmartThings-related restart incident, but there is no evidence here of one universal current Samsung bootloop bug. Identify whether the phone restarts, hangs at the logo or is completely dead; try charging, a model-specific force restart, Safe mode and Smart Switch before considering a reset. Treat every reset or emergency recovery as potentially destructive, and escalate promptly when hardware symptoms or valuable unbacked-up data are involved.
