The tested configuration used a 16GB memory package, giving the chipmaker a faster, more power-efficient memory path for on-device AI, graphics and general smartphone workloads.
This is a component-level validation for phone manufacturers—not a user-replaceable RAM module or an announcement of one specific retail handset.
What Samsung and MediaTek actually validated
Samsung said on July 16, 2024 that it had verified its 10.7Gbps LPDDR5X DRAM with MediaTek’s then-upcoming Dimensity 9400 system-on-chip. The validation used a 16GB package and was completed in three months, according to Samsung.
MediaTek’s platform specification identifies the supported memory speed as LPDDR5X 10667 Mbps. The memory serves the Dimensity 9400’s CPU, GPU and NPU, so it is shared by conventional apps, graphics rendering and artificial-intelligence processing.

Samsung Executive Vice President YongCheol Bae described the result as “the industry’s fastest LPDDR5X DRAM” and said it was intended to support the AI smartphone market. MediaTek Corporate Senior Vice President JC Hsu called the validation the first for its next-generation Dimensity chipset at operating speeds up to 10.7Gbps. Those are statements from the companies, not independent benchmark findings or an independently verified market ranking.
What 10.7Gbps means
Data rate, not storage capacity
10.7Gbps is the peak per-pin data-transfer rate of the LPDDR5X memory interface. MediaTek expresses the same capability as 10,667 Mbps. It describes how quickly data can move between the processor and memory; it does not mean the phone has 10.7GB of RAM or 10.7GB of storage.
Why LPDDR5X matters for AI phones
On-device AI models repeatedly move weights, activations and intermediate results between memory and the processor. Higher memory bandwidth can reduce the time those transfers take and help keep the CPU, GPU and NPU supplied with data. Better efficiency can reduce the energy cost of those transfers, which is important when AI features run on battery power.
Memory speed alone does not determine an AI feature’s response time. Performance also depends on the Dimensity 9400’s NPU architecture, software, model size, quantization, thermal limits and the phone maker’s tuning. The validation shows that the memory and SoC can operate together at the stated speed; it does not establish a particular chatbot, image generator or camera feature’s benchmark result.

Samsung’s claimed improvements over the previous generation
Samsung reported more than 25% improvement in combined power consumption and performance compared with its previous-generation product in the July validation announcement. In an April 2024 development release, Samsung listed separate design targets of:
- 25% higher performance
- 30% more capacity
- 25% higher power efficiency
Samsung attributed those design gains to a 12nm-class process technology. The percentages are vendor-reported comparisons with Samsung’s prior generation, not results from an independent laboratory test. “More capacity” refers to the memory product’s available density options; the validated Dimensity 9400 configuration specifically used a 16GB package.
How the memory fits into Dimensity 9400
MediaTek launched Dimensity 9400 on October 9, 2024 as an edge-AI-focused flagship SoC. Its all-big-core CPU design is paired with a GPU and NPU that use the platform’s LPDDR5X memory subsystem.
| Item | Validated or published value | What it tells you |
|---|---|---|
| Memory type | LPDDR5X | A low-power mobile DRAM standard designed for high bandwidth. |
| Peak interface speed | 10.7Gbps (10,667 Mbps) | The supported data rate cited by Samsung and MediaTek. |
| Validated package | 16GB | The memory capacity used in the Samsung–MediaTek verification. |
| Process technology | 12nm-class | Samsung’s stated process class for the new DRAM design. |
| Processor destination | Dimensity 9400 CPU, GPU and NPU | All three compute blocks can draw from the shared memory subsystem. |
| Validation timing | Completed in July 2024, in three months | A platform-readiness milestone before commercial device launches. |
Is Dimensity 9400 using Samsung RAM?
The validated Dimensity 9400 platform used Samsung’s 16GB LPDDR5X package. That confirms a Samsung memory-and-MediaTek platform combination, but it does not mean every Dimensity 9400 phone must use Samsung DRAM. Smartphone manufacturers choose qualified memory configurations and suppliers for each device, subject to the SoC platform’s support and their own bill of materials.

A phone’s retail specifications may list only “LPDDR5X” and its RAM capacity, without identifying the DRAM vendor. You should not infer the supplier from the processor name alone.
Will LPDDR5X make an AI smartphone faster?
It can remove a memory-bandwidth or memory-efficiency bottleneck, particularly for workloads that continuously exchange large data sets with the NPU, GPU or CPU. That creates headroom for faster model execution or lower energy use, but the user-visible result depends on the complete phone design.
Where the benefit is most plausible
- Generative-AI features that run locally rather than in the cloud
- High-resolution image and video processing
- Large language or vision models that keep substantial data in memory
- Gaming and other workloads that share memory bandwidth with the GPU
What the validation does not prove
- A specific improvement in app launch time, camera processing or battery life
- That every phone with LPDDR5X runs at 10.7Gbps
- That memory speed alone determines NPU throughput
- That Samsung’s percentage claims apply unchanged to a finished handset
Can you upgrade LPDDR5X in a phone?
No consumer upgrade path is established for this package. LPDDR5X is assembled close to—or in a package with—the application processor and soldered to the phone’s main board. It is not a removable SO-DIMM or a socketed desktop-style module.
The 16GB figure describes the package selected by the device manufacturer. Increasing a phone’s RAM requires a different board-level design, compatible power and signal routing, firmware support and factory assembly. A repair shop cannot normally turn an existing model into a higher-capacity version by swapping a plug-in memory stick.

Which phones support Dimensity 9400?
The validation announcement and platform specification establish support for the Dimensity 9400 platform, not a definitive retail-phone list. Specific models depend on manufacturers’ launch plans, regional availability and the memory package they select. Check the phone maker’s official specification page for the exact model and market; do not treat “Dimensity 9400” as proof that a phone uses the validated Samsung 16GB configuration.
How to read a phone’s LPDDR5X specification
- Check the stated capacity. “12GB” or “16GB” is the installed memory amount, not the memory’s data rate.
- Check the interface generation. LPDDR5X identifies the standard, while the phone may omit its exact operating speed.
- Look for the SoC model. The processor’s published specification indicates the maximum supported memory configuration, but the handset maker may configure less.
- Separate physical RAM from virtual memory. Storage-backed “RAM expansion” is not additional LPDDR5X bandwidth and generally cannot match physical DRAM performance.
- Verify the exact regional model. Capacity, memory supplier and even processor variants can differ between markets.
Why this milestone matters to device makers
For a phone manufacturer, validating memory with a flagship SoC reduces integration risk before mass production. The three-month Samsung–MediaTek verification indicates that the DRAM package, memory controller and Dimensity 9400 platform reached an operating point the companies considered ready for upcoming designs.
That matters as AI workloads increase memory traffic. A faster interface can provide bandwidth headroom, while the claimed efficiency improvements target the battery and thermal costs of sustained processing. The eventual consumer impact still depends on the phone’s cooling system, battery, software and AI model implementation.
