Cloudflare R2 can store a terabyte for far less than Azure Blob Storage in most list-price scenarios, but it does not store a terabyte for free. The $0 end of the headline reflects R2’s free monthly allowances, which cover small usage. A full terabyte at R2’s standard storage rate costs about $15 a month before any request charges. The $205 figure cannot be checked from Azure’s public pricing material alone, because Azure’s bill depends on tier, redundancy, region, operations, and downloads. Treat it as a scenario, not a rate.

Where the $0 comes from

Cloudflare’s R2 pricing page lists a free monthly allowance on the Standard storage class: 10 GB-month of storage, 1 million Class A requests, and 10 million Class B requests per month. Usage inside those limits is not billed. Usage beyond them is. Cloudflare R2 pricing is the primary reference for these allowances and their current labels.

That allowance is small. Ten gigabytes is one percent of a decimal terabyte. A solo project that stays under 10 GB and makes modest request volume can reasonably run at $0 on R2. A project holding a full terabyte cannot.

What one terabyte costs on R2

R2 Standard storage is listed at $0.015 per GB-month. Infrequent Access storage is listed at $0.01 per GB-month, with retrieval fees and a 30-day minimum storage duration. Cloudflare measures storage in GB-months averaged over the billing period and rounds usage up to billing units.

Using decimal units (1 TB = 1,000 GB), the storage-only list-rate arithmetic works out as follows:

  • Gross storage at list rate: 1,000 GB × $0.015 = $15.00 per month.
  • After the 10 GB-month included allowance: 990 GB × $0.015 = $14.85 per month.
  • Infrequent Access, gross: 1,000 GB × $0.01 = $10.00 per month, before retrieval fees and the 30-day minimum.

These are list-rate figures for storage alone. Request charges, taxes, and any account-level charges are separate. If your tool reports binary units (1 TiB = 1,024 GiB), the storage line rises slightly, to about $15.36 at the Standard rate before the allowance. Check which unit your provider’s usage report uses before comparing bills.

Requests and egress on R2

R2 bills requests in two classes. Standard list prices are $4.50 per million Class A requests and $0.36 per million Class B requests, per Cloudflare’s pricing page. Class A generally covers write-type operations and Class B covers reads; confirm the classification for the operations your app uses on the pricing page, because the mapping is what determines your bill.

R2 egress is listed at $0. For a site or app that serves many downloads to the internet, this is the most material difference from many cloud object stores. Request charges still apply, so a download-heavy workload is not free just because bandwidth is free.

Why $205 cannot be verified

Azure Blob Storage pricing has several independent dimensions: storage tier, redundancy, region, operation counts, data retrieval, and outbound data transfer. Microsoft’s cost-planning guidance lists these meters and directs users to the Azure pricing calculator for configuration-specific estimates. The public pricing page shows rates per configuration rather than a single headline price for a terabyte.

Because the rate depends on those inputs, a $205 total can be reproduced only by someone who records the inputs behind it: the region, the tier, the redundancy option, the stored capacity, the monthly request counts, the download volume, and any credits or account conditions. Without them, the number is a scenario, and it should not be presented as the Azure price for one terabyte.

Kjdsxld Fabric Storage Bin Collapsible with Handles for Organization
  • DURABLE MATERIAL: Constructed with 300D Oxford fabric exterior and a hollow board interior frame to prevent deformation and maintain shape over time.
  • WATERPROOF LINING: Features a waterproof interior lining that is easy to wipe clean, keeping your stored items protected and the bin looking fresh.
  • COMPACT & FOLDABLE: The hollow board sides fold easily in the middle, allowing the bin to collapse flat for convenient storage when not in use.
  • VERSATILE USE: Perfect for organizing clothing, books, toys, and more in closets, shelves, bedrooms, living rooms, or study rooms.
  • DIMENSIONS & HANDLE: Measures 11.02 x 11.02 x 11.02 inches with a sturdy built-in handle for easy retrieval and repositioning.

Inputs you need to build a fair Azure estimate

  1. Open the Azure pricing calculator guidance and search for Azure Blob Storage.
  2. Select the region you will deploy in. Rates vary by region, so do not reuse a figure from another location.
  3. Select the access tier. Read Microsoft’s access tiers overview for the tier definitions, outbound transfer notes, and any minimum-duration or retrieval rules that apply to cooler tiers.
  4. Select the redundancy option. Redundancy changes the storage rate, so keep the same option when comparing with R2.
  5. Enter stored capacity in GB and state whether your calculation uses decimal or binary units.
  6. Enter read, write, and list operation counts from your expected usage, not from a default example.
  7. Enter expected outbound data transfer in GB per month, including the destination if the calculator asks for it.
  8. Record the output with every input. A total without its inputs is not reproducible.

Microsoft’s plan and manage costs guidance for Azure Blob Storage describes the meters you should expect to see on the bill. Azure’s own Blob Storage pricing page lists the public rates for each dimension. Which service fits a solo developer

The choice depends less on the headline storage price than on what the rest of your stack already uses.

  • Choose R2 if your files are served to the public internet, your app is already on Cloudflare Workers, or you want S3-compatible SDK access. Its zero-egress model removes the largest variable from a download-heavy bill.
  • Choose Azure Blob Storage if your application already runs on Azure services, if your compliance or account setup requires Azure, or if a specific redundancy or tier option matters to your design. Price this with the calculator inputs above before deciding.
  • Do not treat S3 compatibility as full parity. R2 supports S3-compatible access, but not every S3 feature or edge behavior is guaranteed. Test the specific API calls your application uses.

A storage-only comparison is not enough to pick a winner. R2 has the clearer published list price for a simple, download-heavy terabyte. Azure’s total depends on configuration, and a fair comparison requires the same storage amount, operation counts, and transfer volume on both sides.

Common mistakes when reading the headline

  • Reading the $0 as “one terabyte is free.” The allowance covers 10 GB-month of storage.
  • Comparing R2’s storage rate with an Azure total built on a different tier or region.
  • Ignoring request counts. A workload with many small objects can generate more operation charges than storage charges.
  • Assuming free egress covers all transfer costs. Request charges still apply on R2.

Checklist before you commit

  • Record your expected stored GB, read and write operations, and monthly downloads.
  • Run the same inputs through R2’s pricing page and the Azure calculator, using the same region and redundancy where applicable.
  • Confirm which SDK and API calls your code makes and test them against each service.
  • Recheck both pricing pages before you commit, since rates and labels change.

The Bottom Line

For a solo developer serving files publicly, R2 is the simpler choice on published list prices: a full terabyte is about $15 a month for storage, with no egress charge. Azure can be the better fit when the rest of the application already runs on it, but its cost should be judged only from a calculator estimate with the inputs written down.
