Salesforce’s software-engineering interviews can include a coding assessment, hiring-manager conversation, technical interviews, live coding, and a design problem—but the sequence and rounds vary by role and region. Salesforce’s public guidance does not establish one fixed question bank or a separate system-design round for every opening. Use the job description and recruiter to confirm what applies to your position, then prepare to explain your reasoning as well as your answers.
What is the Salesforce software engineer interview process?
Salesforce’s current How We Hire guidance describes a process that may start with resume review and a HackerRank assessment covering computer-science fundamentals and coding. Candidates who pass may be shared with engineering; if a team match is found, the next steps can include a hiring-manager interview and technical interviews with live coding. The order can vary by region.
Salesforce’s Tech Core early-career guidance also describes HackerRank, a hiring-manager interview, and technical live coding. For AMTS candidates, it names computer-science fundamentals, databases, data structures, and algorithms as examples of technical topics. That is useful context for early-career applicants, not a guaranteed outline for experienced hires or every engineering role.
For a virtual technical screen, Salesforce’s engineering Trailhead guidance says candidates typically discuss their resume, experience, and career goals, then work through a design problem and coding in a language they choose. The shared-screen format lets the interviewer see how the candidate breaks down a problem.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Later technical or onsite conversations may go deeper. Salesforce’s onsite interview guide describes technical and behavioral questions, real-time whiteboard coding, and attention to how candidates explain their thinking and collaborate. Its careers information says most conversations are virtual and an onsite interview at a Salesforce office is required before an offer; ask the recruiter how that currently applies to your opening and location.
Does Salesforce ask system-design questions?
Salesforce’s Trailhead guide says a design problem is typically part of the virtual technical screen. That supports preparing to discuss design, but the published material does not provide a canonical list of system-design questions or promise a separate system-design round for every software-engineering role. The exact format depends on the position and team.

For a design prompt, use a clear problem-solving sequence rather than assuming the interviewer expects one particular architecture:
- Clarify users, goals, constraints, and what a successful result must do.
- Describe the high-level components and how they interact.
- Identify the important data and interfaces, then explain how information moves through the system.
- Discuss tradeoffs and how the design responds to relevant constraints or failure cases.
This is a general preparation framework, not a Salesforce-published rubric. Ask your recruiter whether the opening has a design exercise and whether it is a distinct round or part of a broader technical screen.

What coding questions should you practice?
Salesforce’s published guidance points to computer-science fundamentals and coding rather than a guaranteed set of named questions. For early-career AMTS candidates, Salesforce specifically mentions databases, data structures, and algorithms. The exact topics and format remain role-dependent, so prioritize the skills listed in the job description and practice in a language you can use fluently.
During practice, make your process visible: state assumptions, break the problem into steps, explain your choices, and check edge cases. Salesforce’s preparation guidance emphasizes decomposition, decision-making, narrating your reasoning, and asking for clarification when needed. Practice both at an editor and by explaining or sketching your approach aloud, since official guidance describes shared-screen coding as well as real-time whiteboard coding.

Salesforce names Cracking the Coding Interview by Gayle Laakmann McDowell as an optional refresher in its onsite preparation guide. It is a suggested resource, not a required book or a promise that interview questions will match its exercises. Third-party question lists can supply practice prompts, but they should not be treated as Salesforce’s verified or guaranteed question bank.

Salesforce says interviews may include behavioral, competency-based, and situational questions. Prepare a handful of truthful, specific examples from work, school, or projects that show how you handled situations such as:

- Working with others to deliver a result.
- Adapting when plans or requirements changed unexpectedly.
- Solving a difficult problem or finding a useful improvement.
- Getting unstuck, seeking input, and learning from feedback.
Salesforce identifies trust, customer success, innovation, and equality as core values on its careers page. If one connects naturally to an example, explain the decision you made and its effect rather than simply repeating a value statement. The onsite guide says behavioral questions help interviewers understand what candidates value, how they think and collaborate, and how they solve problems.
For early-career applicants, Tim Kimball, Manager, Futureforce, offers a practical reminder in Salesforce’s Tech Core interview-process guidance: “During your interview, any time you get stuck on a problem, call it out, ask for help, our engineers get stuck all the time. They want to see how you collaborate in times where you may need support from a team member.” This advice is explicitly framed for the Tech Core program; the underlying lesson—communicate when you are stuck—is useful practice without implying every interviewer uses the same rubric.
Quick Recap
A practical preparation plan
- Map the role requirements. Read the exact job description and connect each relevant requirement to an example from your work, study, or projects. Salesforce recommends using the job description to prepare.
- Confirm the format. Ask the recruiter which stages apply, whether there is an assessment, what the technical screen covers, whether design is a separate round, and what tools or interview format to expect. Salesforce says process details can vary and recruiters can answer questions about the process.
- Practice coding out loud. Work through fundamentals in your preferred language, explain your reasoning, and include both editor-based and whiteboard-style practice.
- Rehearse a design discussion. Practice clarifying needs, outlining a design, and explaining tradeoffs; do not assume a design prompt necessarily means a separate system-design interview.
- Prepare behavioral examples and questions. Choose specific, honest examples and learn enough about Salesforce’s products and business to explain your interest in this role and ask informed questions of the team.
